The Boston Red Sox traded All-Star left-hander Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. In exchange, the Red Sox are getting talented infielder Vaughn Grissom.

The Red Sox paid tribute to Sale after the trade was made official, uploading a video of Sale’s World Series-winning strikeout of Manny Machado in 2018.

Sale was in the final year of the five-year, $145 million extension he signed with the Boston team in 2019. To facilitate the deal, the 34-year-old player waived his no-trade clause while the Red Sox are also covering $17 million of his $27.5 million salary for the 2024 MLB season.

Chris Sale joined the Red Sox in 2017 in a trade from the Chicago White Sox. He earned All-Star selection in his first two years with the franchise while also winning his first World Series ring. However, Sale failed to play on the same level in the following years, dealing with a drop in form, Tommy John surgery, and several injuries.

Sale made 20 starts for the Red Sox in 2023, finishing the campaign with a 6-5 record, 4.30 ERA, and 125 strikeouts.

Vaughn Grissom has two seasons of experience in MLB. He played 64 games for the Braves, batting .287 with five home runs and 27 RBIs.

Boston Red Sox left-handed starting pitcher Chris Sale underwent successful ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery, commonly known as “Tommy John surgery,” on Monday after being injured during Spring Training.

Sale, who turned 31-years-old over the weekend, is a seven-time American League All Star and has twice led the league in strikeouts during his years with the White Sox and the Red Sox.

The hard-throwing lefty got off to a rough start to the Spring Training season in February, missing the first couple of weeks of camp due to a case of pneumonia. After that, while building up arm strength, he reportedly suffered the ulnar collateral ligament injury.

The Florida native had no choice but to undergo reconstructive surgery, a procedure with a lengthy rehab period. Normally, players miss around 14-16 months before they are allowed to return to the playing field after undergoing the surgery.

Sale had a disappointing 2019 season after being lights-out for Boston during his first two seasons with the club. He posted an uncharacteristic 4.40 ERA, surrendering 1.47 home runs per nine innings.

Now, Sale will focus on rehabilitation and getting back to the mound as quickly as possible in the 2021 season. His five-year, $145 million contract with the club ends after the 2024 season.

Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale has given his team the worst possible news as they head into the second month of Spring Training, experiencing elbow trouble that has the entire organization worried.

Sale, who reported to Spring Training with pneumonia and was already expected to be delayed in his preparations for the 2020 regular season, experienced left elbow soreness after throwing a live batting practice session on Monday.

The elbow is the same one that gave the lanky lefty problems near the end of last season, with his team shutting him down in August. Despite rumors that he would need Tommy John Surgery, Sale ultimately only received a platelet-rich plasma injection that the team thought had fixed the problem.

Considering Monday’s surprising development, perhaps this assumption was erroneous.

Sale is expected to anchor the Red Sox’s rotation if healthy in 2020, which now seems like a big question mark. The Florida native signed a five-year, $145 million contract extension with Boston before last season which got off to a bad start after a disappointing year that was cut short by injury.

Sale is a seven-time All-Star, and his 2019 season was the first one since 2011 in which he was not named to the team.

For now, all Boston fans can do is sit back and wait to see if their star pitcher makes a quick recovery, or if he might be headed to the operating room.

Boston Red Sox’ pitcher Chris Sale is back on the disabled list due to issues with his shoulder. The Red Sox placed Sale on the disabled list earlier this month due to “mild shoulder inflammation,” but the issue seemed like it was taken care of. Still, after one healthy start against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday, the 29-year-old All-Star still has problems with his shoulder.

It’s definitely less than it was last time,” – Sale told reporters prior to the game against Tampa Bay. “It didn’t bounce back, wasn’t really responding the way we wanted it to. Given kind of where we are, it was kind of right call to give it some rest and stay on top of it. You don’t want to be playing catch-up during a time like this.

Boston Red Sox didn’t want to take any chances with Chris Sale, preferring to have him in full health for what they hope will be a long postseason run.

I think it’s a smart move,” – said Red Sox’ manager Alex Coar. “This guy is very important to what we’re trying to accomplish, and if he needs to skip one, two, three [starts], whatever, we’re willing to do that. He’ll be back. Like he said, he feels better than the last time we put him on the DL, so he’ll get his rest, he’ll go through treatment, and we’ll go from there.

In order to fill Sale’s spot on the roster, the team recalled Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Chris Sale is 12-4 with 1.97 ERA in 23 appearances this season. He is considered to be the leading favorite for Cy Young Award this year, due to the fact that he never got one despite excelling during his time in MLB.

Sale has seven consecutive MLB All-Star and led the American League in strikeouts two times. He is currently MLB’s career leader in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.12) while reaching becoming the fastest pitcher to record 1,500 strikeouts.
