The Premier League side Chelsea reportedly settled on Mauricio Pochettino as the club’s new manager. According to multiple reports, Pochettino accepted Chelsea’s offer and will take over after the 2022-23 season ends.

Chelsea still hasn’t made the hiring official. The club will wait until Pochettino arrives in London at some point this week to announce the news. The Argentinean is expected to sign a deal until 2026.

Pochettino was out of a job since being fired by Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2021-22 campaign. He previously also coached Chelsea’s rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Premier League side Southampton, and La Liga club Espanyol. 

Chelsea started the 2022-23 season with Thomas Tuchel at the helm but replaced the UEFA Champions League-winning manager just two months into the campaign. The club plucked Graham Potter away from Brighton to replace Tuchel, seeing him as a perfect candidate for their long-term project. However, the plan didn’t exactly work out for the Blues.

Potter lasted only seven months on the job, having lost 11 out of his 31 games in charge. Chelsea ended up replacing him with club legend Frank Lampard on an interim basis as they looked for a new manager.

The London club took a different approach this time, casting a wide net and interviewing a number of well-respected candidates. While their shortlist included the likes of Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann, Chelsea’s brass ended up deciding that Pochettino was the man who would bring the glory back to Stamford Bridge. We’ll have to wait until the next season starts in order to find out whether this is the case.

Chelsea and Benfica found themselves deadlocked in negotiations over the transfer of midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Benfica is reportedly prepared to sell the player to the Premier League side on condition that their €120 million release clause is met in full.

Sources from both clubs have delivered conflicting messages over the sale of the 21-year-old Argentinian. While sources close to Benfica claim that Chelsea could pay up to €127 million with the additional sum being used to entice the Portuguese club to accept the payment in installments, sources familiar with Chelsea insist that the Premier League club has not yet committed to the sum of the release clause.

While Fernandez remains a top transfer target for the Blues, Chelsea is hoping to negotiate his price down with Benfica. A lower fee would give Chelsea the extra funding necessary to pursue other acquisitions including Monaco center-back Benoit Badiashile, who the club is set to sign for a fee of €37 million.

Currently, in 10th place in the Premier League, the Blues are looking to strengthen their squad in order to turn their season around and qualify for European football next season.

Twenty-three-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams and seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton could soon own a piece of Premier League powerhouse Chelsea. According to ESPN, Williams and Hamilton joined a group of investors led by British businessman Martin Broughton.

The two world-class athletes have been in discussions to back Broughton’s bid for several weeks now. Reportedly, both Williams and Hamilton agreed to contribute £10 million each.

Broughton’s bid, one of three shortlisted by U.S. bank Raine Group, already has numerous high-profile investors. Broughton himself was once a chairman for another Premier League club Liverpool. In addition, he is backed by the Philadelphia 76ers’ majority owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe, and “many other wealthy investors.”

Raine Group opened the bidding for Chelsea last month and considered many bids before shortlisting four that had the most potential earlier in April. Since then, the Ricketts family, who own the Chicago Cubs, decided to withdraw their bid after facing backlash from Chelsea fans.

The two remaining bids that will go against Broughton’s group are both led by American investors. One is fronted by the Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly while the other has Steve Pagliuca, the co-owner of the Boston Celtics, as its most prominent figure.

Netherland’s giants Ajax continues to cash in on their young stars. After selling Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt for a combined $160 million in the summer, the club will now also part ways with Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech in a big-money transfer.

Ajax confirmed on Thursday that they have agreed on a transfer that will see Ziyech join Premier League powerhouse Chelsea in July. According to the official statement, the transfer will cost up to $48 million.

“Ajax and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of Hakim Ziyech,” said Ajax in a statement. “The player will join the Premier League club on July 1, 2020 and will finish the season in Amsterdam.  The clubs have agreed a deal of € 40m. This sum could potentially increase to a maximum of € 44m, with variable factors.”

Following his fine form last season, in which he scored 21 goals and dished 13 assists in all competitions, Ziyech attracted interest from numerous big European clubs. Among his suitors were Barcelona, PSG, and Manchester United, but Chelsea ended up being the quickest to finish the job.

Hakim Ziyech joined Ajax from Twente in 2016 and has since played 159 games in all competitions for the club, scoring 47 goals. He helped the team win Eredivisie and KNVB Cup while leading the league in assists in each of the past four seasons. Ziyech also won Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2018 and was part of the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season in 2018–19.

Ziyech is Morocco international since 2015 and has scored 14 goals in 32 games since then.
