The Cleveland Browns will face the Denver Broncos on Thursday night without their starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. Instead of Mayfield, who is dealing with a shoulder injury, the Browns’ offense will be led by veteran Case Keenum.

The Browns made this decision after Mayfield practiced in a limited capacity in recent days. The 26-year-old initially got hurt in Week 2 against the Houston Texans but has continued to play through the injury since.

Reportedly, Cleveland hopes the added rest will allow Mayfield to continue playing this season and avoid the surgery. While he was officially diagnosed with a torn labrum, he didn’t have to undergo a procedure since it’s his left, non-throwing shoulder.

The game against the Broncos will be the first Mayfield misses in his NFL career since being named the starter in Week 3 of his rookie year.

For Case Keenum, on the other hand, this will be the first start since the 2019 season and first in Cleveland Browns’ uniform. Keenum signed with the Browns on a three-year, $18 million deal in 2020. The 33-year-old since attempted 13 passes in four relief appearances, throwing for 52 yards.

Keenum, who previously played for the Minnesota Vikings and the Broncos, among other teams, has 14,420 passing yards and 75 passing touchdowns in his NFL career.

Washington Redskins have finally figured out their starting quarterback puzzle. The team’s head coach Jay Gruden confirmed on Sunday that veteran Case Keenum secured the starting spot on QB position ahead of Week 1 game against Philadelphia Eagles.

Redskins’ had one of the more interesting QB situations in NFL, as Keenum, veteran Colt McCoy, and rookie Dwayne Haskins all had genuine cases to be named starters for 2019 NFL season.

For the better part of the training camp and preseason, it looked like McCoy might have secured the job, but his odds plummeted in recent week as he began struggling with a lingering tibia injury. Haskins, on the other side, showed promise, but his inexperience ended up working against his favor. This paved the way for Keenum to win the Washington’s starting QB sweepstakes.

“I’m excited, I really am,” – said Keenum after finding out the news. “I don’t take it lightly. The opportunity, the position I’m in … I’ve been there before, and I know it’s a tough job and there’s only 32 of them. I’m very honored. … I’m excited to continue to earn the right to be the leader for this team, to be the quarterback of this team.”

They got it done on Thursday, agreeing to trade Keenum to the Washington Redskins for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

As part of the deal, Denver will pay half of Keenum’s $8 million salary in 2019.

He threw for 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions on the year.

The season was the Houston graduate’s second as a starting QB after he led the Minnesota Vikings in 2017.

Keenum now finally decided to speak publicly about the trade during his recent interview with Sports Spectrum Podcast, saying he was “shocked” by the move.

“[Broncos general manager John] Elway called me that morning and we had a great conversation, which he didn’t have to do, and I appreciated that,”- said Keenum. “I was definitely shocked, it was a surprise for us and I think probably for the first day or so that’s kind of what it was. But for us, we’re definitely disappointed, it’s not something we wanted to happen. I know that everybody’s doing their job and John feels like that was a chance for him to help the Broncos out.”

Case Keenum didn’t have bad numbers in his lone season with Denver Broncos, managing to complete 62.3 percent of his passes for 3,890 yards and 18 touchdowns. The team, however, played poorly overall and Elway decided to try with a different approach at the QB position.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapaport, Broncos’ plan is to try and find a buyer for Keenum among NFL teams in a need of a quarterback. If they failed to do so, they will give the player an option to take a significant pay cut or get released.

“For us, it’s another chapter in our lives and we’re going to roll with it,” – the 31-year-old QB added. “We’re going to approach this like I do everything in my entire life, and that it’s not by accident this has happened. It’s just another chapter and another opportunity to overcome some adversity in my life.”

One of the major factors in Vikings’ decision will definitely be finances. The team isn’t about to give up $30 million or so for a quarterback, wanting to have space to further strengthen their roster. Also either one of Bradford, Keenum and Bridgewater have both its positives and negatives as Zimmer pointed out.

Sam Bradford is a proven quarterback who already passed for 3,877 yards and managed 20 touchdowns in 2016 for the Vikings. He also led the league in completion percentage in the same year. The downside is that he has a history of injuries, and inability to translate his good performances into wins.

After Bradford got injured in Week 2 of the past season, Case Keenum took over and went from a backup to a star of the team. He led the Vikings to NFC Championship Game, putting a strong season and achieving career-high passer rating (98.4). On the other side, there is a doubt he can replicate the success from 2017, given his below average performance before arriving in Minnesota.

Finally, there is Teddy Bridgewater, who supposed to be a franchise quarterback for Minnesota Vikings, who drafted him 32nd overall in 2014 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, Bridgewater looked more than promising but then suffered an injury in August 2016 which kept him out for 19 months. Although he fully healed, there is a question whether he can get to his old form.

Minnesota Vikings‘ QB Sam Bradford will miss another game due to his knee injury. Bradford suffered the injury during the Vikings’ Week 1 win against the New Orleans Saints and was made inactive for Week 2 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The injury was described as non-contact and Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said it won’t require a surgery. Bradford participated in the limited practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but his left knee didn’t respond that well and he wasn’t present at the Friday’s practice. During his media after Friday’s practice, Zimmer confirmed that Bradford is ruled out for the Week 3 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
