The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly agreed to trade their quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles will receive a third-round pick in 2021 and a conditional second-rounder in 2022 as part of the deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the second-round selection can become a first-rounder if Wentz plays 75 percent of the snaps in the 2021 NFL season. It will also happen if he plays 70 percent or more snaps and the Colts make the playoffs.

The trade can’t become official until the start of the new league year on March 17th.

The two teams have been reportedly engaged in the conversations for weeks, trying to work out a deal. The Eagles tried to stir up the market and get a better trade package, but Wentz didn’t attract much interest from other teams so they ended up taking the Colts offer.

The deal represents a fresh start for the Eagles, who move on from the player they traded up to get with the No. 2 pick in 2016. While Carson Wentz initially lived up to the expectations, his injuries and inconsistent play in recent seasons have paved the way for his exit.

Wentz had a disastrous 2020 campaign, completing just 57.4 percent of his passes (34th in the NFL) and throwing league-leading 15 picks. This caused the Eagles to bench the 28-year-old QB and turn to rookie Jalen Hurts towards the end of the regular season.

The Eagles are now expected to install Hurts as their starter in 2021, although reports say that the team will bring in a veteran for the position.

Carson Wentz, on the other hand, will be reunited with Frank Reich in Indianapolis and get a chance to resurrect his career. While Reich was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in 2017, Wentz had an MVP-worthy outing before an ACL injury cut his season short.  He earned his only All-Pro, and Pro Bowl nods that year.

The Colts have been without a long-term solution at the QB position since Andrew Luck retired. Wentz could be that guy if the new surroundings help him rediscover his form considering his upside. If not, the Colts won’t lose much considering the low price they paid.

In a move that would have seemed inconceivable just a short time ago, the Philadelphia Eagles have announced that they have benched Carson Wentz as their starting quarterback, and that Jalen Hurts will start the team’s Sunday matchup against the Saints.

Wentz, a 2017 Pro Bowler who excelled during his first four seasons as the Eagles’ starting quarterback, is in the midst of a 2020 to forget. This has, of course, coincided with Philadelphia’s disappointing 3-8-1 record.

After throwing only 7 interceptions in each of his past three seasons, Wentz’s inaccuracy has skyrocketed in 2020 as he has thrown 15 interceptions to go along with only 16 touchdowns.

Not only this, but Wentz’s completion percentage of 57.4% sits well below his career average of 62.6%.

With the team’s playoff hopes slim and coach Doug Pederson looking to generate a spark for his struggling team, former Alabama star Jalen Hurts will take the field on Sunday as the team’s #1 option at the position.

The rookie QB, who was selected in the 2nd round by the Eagles in this summer’s NFL Draft, has appeared in 11 games this season, throwing for 142 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.

Hurts won’t have it easy against one of the league’s best teams on Sunday, but it will be his first chance to audition for a job that he could potentially earn on a full-time basis.

Quarterback Carson Wentz seems to be playing worse as the 2020 season progresses, making it difficult for the Philadelphia Eagles to get in control of the weak NFC East. But despite this, Wentz seems to have the support of his head coach Doug Pederson.

Wentz produced another struggling performance in Sunday’s 22-17 loss to Cleveland Browns when he helped the opposing team produce nine points. He first threw a pick-six and later took a sack in his endzone, which resulted in a safety.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Pederson rejected the possibility of benching Wentz and said that this move would send a “bad message” to the rest of the team.

“I think you’re sending the wrong message to your football team that the season is over,” said Pederson. “That’s a bad message.”

After the loss against the Browns, the Eagles are currently sitting on a 3-6-1 result. In any other division, this would have them out of the playoff contention already, but since they play in NFC East, they can still make the postseason.

That will be easier said than done, as Carson Wentz has been one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL throughout the first 10 games. Although he threw for 2,326 yards, Wentz is completing only 58.4 percent of his passes in 2020 while having the same touchdown-to-interception ratio.

It remains to be seen how long will Pederson support Wentz if he continues to add to his dreadful resume. In case his patience runs out at some point, the Eagles have the 2020 second-round pick Jalen Hurts waiting on the bench.

Philadelphia Eagles are officially all-in on quarterback Carson Wentz. After letting Nick Foles go, to remove any doubts about the starter for 2019, Eagles now also gave Wentz a big-time extension.

The team announced on Friday that they have agreed to a four-year extension with Wentz, which will keep him with the franchise through 2024. The 26-year-old signal caller has two years left on his rookie deal.

According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Wentz’s deal is worth $128 million with $107.9 million guaranteed. He will receive $66 million as a signing bonus while having an opportunity to earn $16 million more through bonuses.

Eagles confirmed the deal on their official social media.

“I can’t even explain to you how excited I am right now to be a part of this great city for this many more years. It means the world to me.” – said Wentz in a video published on Twitter. “From the moment I got drafted here, I knew this place was special.”

Philadelphia Eagles took Carson Wentz second overall in 2016 NFL Draft and made him the team’s starting QB in his rookie year. After a solid first year in the league, Wentz had a breakthrough season in 2017 in which he was an MVP candidate until he tore his ACL in Week 14 game against Los Angeles Rams.

In 2018, Wentz also struggled with injuries, having to end the season prematurely due to back problems. He played 11 games last season, completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 3,074 yards and 21 touchdowns.

In a move that came as a surprise to no one, Philadelphia Eagles decided to exercise the fifth-year option on quarterback Carson Wentz’s contract. This move will keep Wentz in Philadelphia through 2020 season.

Wentz is scheduled to earn $4.087 million in 2019, while his fifth-year option will earn him $22.783 million.

The move was confirmed on Eagles’ official social media.

Eagles took Carson Wentz second overall in 2016 NFL Draft and made him a starter in the first year. Wentz had a solid start of his professional career before embarking on a MVP-worthy run in 2017 when he led the team to 11 wins in 13 games. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in Week 14 game against Los Angeles Rams when he tore his ACL. This opened the door for his backup Nick Foles, who stepped in and took Philly to a Super Bowl win.

Wentz came back from injury in Week 3 of 2018 season, but failed to replicate his success and posted 5-6 record as the team’s starting QB before being shut for the season after Week 13 due to issues with a back injury. Foles stepped in once again and led the team to three straight wins that secured the Eagles an improbable playoff appearance.

Despite Carson Wentz’s struggles with injuries in his first three years with the organization, Philadelphia Eagles obviously still believe he is the franchise’s quarterback of the future. Besides exercising his fifth-year option, Eagles previously parted ways with Nick Foles, which once again made Wentz the undisputable No.1 option at QB position. It remains to be seen, however, whether he can stay healthy enough to enjoy it.

Wentz played 40 NFL games since coming to the league, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 10,152 yards and 70 touchdowns.
