Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz wants to play in the NFL this season, even if it means taking a backup role. This was reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler during a recent appearance on SportsCenter.

According to Fowler, Wentz received interest from a number of teams in recent weeks and has communicated to them that he would be open to coming in either as a starter or as a No. 2 quarterback. It is unclear which teams have Wentz on their radar at the moment.

It was previously reported that Wentz spent time in the offseason working with former Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach Jon Gruden as he waits for a new opportunity. Gruden is known as a “quarterbacks’ guru” around the league and has a track of success in helping struggling quarterbacks improve their game.

Once considered one of the up-and-coming quarterbacks in the league, Carson Wentz saw his stock plummet in recent years. He struggled during his stints with the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders in the past two seasons, with both teams electing to move on from him after just one season.

Wentz played eight games in 2022, missing a good chunk of time due to a finger injury and failing to get his job back after recovering. He finished the campaign with a 2-5 record as a starter, throwing for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

The Washington Commanders announced on Monday that they are releasing quarterback Carson Wentz. The move brings Wentz’s disappointing tenure with the franchise to an end less than a year since being acquired in a trade from the Indianapolis Colts.

By moving on from Wentz, the Commanders will save around $26 million in cap space. They are also getting an additional $2.3 million in cap relief after releasing veteran safety Bobby McCain.

The Commanders traded two third-round picks pick to get Wentz last offseason, hoping they could get his career back on track and get the guy that was an MVP candidate early in his career. However, the move proved quite disappointing for both sides.

Wentz started the season in a promising fashion, throwing for 650 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two games as a Commander. However, this proved to be only temporary as the 30-year-old struggled in the next four weeks before fracturing his finger in Week 6 and landing on injured reserves. In total, the former second-overall pick finished the campaign with 1,755 passing yards, 11 TDs, and nine picks.

After ending the Wentz experiment, the Commanders are now expected to pursue a veteran quarterback like Derek Carr or Jimmy Garoppolo on the free agent market. However, it wouldn’t be surprising that the franchise decides to give sophomore signal-caller Sam Howell a chance under center.

Wentz, on the other hand, gets a slight head start on other free-agent quarterbacks after the release. It is hard to believe he will receive another chance to start, but he will be a tempting option for teams looking at a high-end backup.

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly agreed to trade their quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles will receive a third-round pick in 2021 and a conditional second-rounder in 2022 as part of the deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the second-round selection can become a first-rounder if Wentz plays 75 percent of the snaps in the 2021 NFL season. It will also happen if he plays 70 percent or more snaps and the Colts make the playoffs.

The trade can’t become official until the start of the new league year on March 17th.

The two teams have been reportedly engaged in the conversations for weeks, trying to work out a deal. The Eagles tried to stir up the market and get a better trade package, but Wentz didn’t attract much interest from other teams so they ended up taking the Colts offer.

The deal represents a fresh start for the Eagles, who move on from the player they traded up to get with the No. 2 pick in 2016. While Carson Wentz initially lived up to the expectations, his injuries and inconsistent play in recent seasons have paved the way for his exit.

Wentz had a disastrous 2020 campaign, completing just 57.4 percent of his passes (34th in the NFL) and throwing league-leading 15 picks. This caused the Eagles to bench the 28-year-old QB and turn to rookie Jalen Hurts towards the end of the regular season.

The Eagles are now expected to install Hurts as their starter in 2021, although reports say that the team will bring in a veteran for the position.

Carson Wentz, on the other hand, will be reunited with Frank Reich in Indianapolis and get a chance to resurrect his career. While Reich was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in 2017, Wentz had an MVP-worthy outing before an ACL injury cut his season short.  He earned his only All-Pro, and Pro Bowl nods that year.

The Colts have been without a long-term solution at the QB position since Andrew Luck retired. Wentz could be that guy if the new surroundings help him rediscover his form considering his upside. If not, the Colts won’t lose much considering the low price they paid.

Philadelphia Eagles are officially all-in on quarterback Carson Wentz. After letting Nick Foles go, to remove any doubts about the starter for 2019, Eagles now also gave Wentz a big-time extension.

The team announced on Friday that they have agreed to a four-year extension with Wentz, which will keep him with the franchise through 2024. The 26-year-old signal caller has two years left on his rookie deal.

According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Wentz’s deal is worth $128 million with $107.9 million guaranteed. He will receive $66 million as a signing bonus while having an opportunity to earn $16 million more through bonuses.

Eagles confirmed the deal on their official social media.

“I can’t even explain to you how excited I am right now to be a part of this great city for this many more years. It means the world to me.” – said Wentz in a video published on Twitter. “From the moment I got drafted here, I knew this place was special.”

Philadelphia Eagles took Carson Wentz second overall in 2016 NFL Draft and made him the team’s starting QB in his rookie year. After a solid first year in the league, Wentz had a breakthrough season in 2017 in which he was an MVP candidate until he tore his ACL in Week 14 game against Los Angeles Rams.

In 2018, Wentz also struggled with injuries, having to end the season prematurely due to back problems. He played 11 games last season, completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 3,074 yards and 21 touchdowns.

In a move that came as a surprise to no one, Philadelphia Eagles decided to exercise the fifth-year option on quarterback Carson Wentz’s contract. This move will keep Wentz in Philadelphia through 2020 season.

Wentz is scheduled to earn $4.087 million in 2019, while his fifth-year option will earn him $22.783 million.

The move was confirmed on Eagles’ official social media.

Eagles took Carson Wentz second overall in 2016 NFL Draft and made him a starter in the first year. Wentz had a solid start of his professional career before embarking on a MVP-worthy run in 2017 when he led the team to 11 wins in 13 games. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in Week 14 game against Los Angeles Rams when he tore his ACL. This opened the door for his backup Nick Foles, who stepped in and took Philly to a Super Bowl win.

Wentz came back from injury in Week 3 of 2018 season, but failed to replicate his success and posted 5-6 record as the team’s starting QB before being shut for the season after Week 13 due to issues with a back injury. Foles stepped in once again and led the team to three straight wins that secured the Eagles an improbable playoff appearance.

Despite Carson Wentz’s struggles with injuries in his first three years with the organization, Philadelphia Eagles obviously still believe he is the franchise’s quarterback of the future. Besides exercising his fifth-year option, Eagles previously parted ways with Nick Foles, which once again made Wentz the undisputable No.1 option at QB position. It remains to be seen, however, whether he can stay healthy enough to enjoy it.

Wentz played 40 NFL games since coming to the league, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 10,152 yards and 70 touchdowns.
