After just one season, the Indianapolis Colts decided to end their Carson Wentz experiment. According to multiple reports, the Colts agreed to trade the struggling quarterback to the Washington Commanders in exchange for draft picks.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Commanders are giving up third-round selections in 2022 and 2023. The 2023 third-rounder could become a second-round pick if Washington plays Wentz on 70 percent or more of their offensive snaps.

The Colts, on the other hand, will give up a seven-round selection alongside Wentz. The two teams will also swap their second-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Colts acquired Carson Wentz last offseason from the Philadelphia Eagles, hoping the 29-year-old can get his career back on track after struggling for the past couple of years. But while Wentz delivered some promising performances in 2021, he failed to provide consistency on the position and was one of the main reasons why Indianapolis missed the playoffs in a spectacular fashion. The former no. 2 pick completed 62.4 percent of his passes last season while throwing for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

The Commanders are now hoping to succeed where Indianapolis failed. Despite Wentz’s shortcomings, Washington believes he can still provide them an upgrade at the QB position. Last season, they finished 7-10 with undrafted signal-caller Taylor Heinicke as their primary starter.

On the other hand, Indianapolis will get back on the market to look for its franchise quarterback once again. This will be the fifth straight year that the Colts will have a new starter in Week 1.

Indianapolis Colts finally received some positive news ahead of the 2021 NFL season. According to reports, the Colts are growing optimistic that they will have both quarterback Carson Wentz and Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson on their disposal for Week 1.

Wentz and Nelson underwent foot surgeries for similar injuries in early August, and the initial prognosis was that they will be out anywhere from five to 12 weeks. However, the duo is reportedly recovering faster than expected, and Indianapolis coaching staff now believes they will be ready to take the field for the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Colts will further re-evaluate their recovery timeline after they are two weeks removed from the surgery.

Colts acquired Carson Wentz in March, sending Philadelphia Eagles a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional second-rounder in exchange. Wentz, who had a disappointing 2020 NFL season with the Eagles, is locked in as the team’s starting quarterback for this season and beyond.

If Wentz isn’t able to go in Week 1, the Colts will turn to either Jacob Eason or Sam Ehlinger. Eason was the team’s fourth-round pick last year and served as a third-string QB in 2020, while Ehlinger is a sixth-round rookie who played his college football at Texas.

Since being drafted with the sixth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Quenton Nelson emerged as one of the best guards in the league. He played all 48 games in his three seasons as a pro, picking up three Pro Bowl and three First-Team All-Pro nods.

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly agreed to trade their quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles will receive a third-round pick in 2021 and a conditional second-rounder in 2022 as part of the deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the second-round selection can become a first-rounder if Wentz plays 75 percent of the snaps in the 2021 NFL season. It will also happen if he plays 70 percent or more snaps and the Colts make the playoffs.

The trade can’t become official until the start of the new league year on March 17th.

The two teams have been reportedly engaged in the conversations for weeks, trying to work out a deal. The Eagles tried to stir up the market and get a better trade package, but Wentz didn’t attract much interest from other teams so they ended up taking the Colts offer.

The deal represents a fresh start for the Eagles, who move on from the player they traded up to get with the No. 2 pick in 2016. While Carson Wentz initially lived up to the expectations, his injuries and inconsistent play in recent seasons have paved the way for his exit.

Wentz had a disastrous 2020 campaign, completing just 57.4 percent of his passes (34th in the NFL) and throwing league-leading 15 picks. This caused the Eagles to bench the 28-year-old QB and turn to rookie Jalen Hurts towards the end of the regular season.

The Eagles are now expected to install Hurts as their starter in 2021, although reports say that the team will bring in a veteran for the position.

Carson Wentz, on the other hand, will be reunited with Frank Reich in Indianapolis and get a chance to resurrect his career. While Reich was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in 2017, Wentz had an MVP-worthy outing before an ACL injury cut his season short.  He earned his only All-Pro, and Pro Bowl nods that year.

The Colts have been without a long-term solution at the QB position since Andrew Luck retired. Wentz could be that guy if the new surroundings help him rediscover his form considering his upside. If not, the Colts won’t lose much considering the low price they paid.
