Short after losing their head coach Bruce Arians, the Arizona Cardinals will have to look for a new quarterback as well. Just like Arians, Carson Palmer announced that he is retiring from NFL. He revealed the decision via a letter posted on Cardinals’ social media and official website.

Over the years, I’ve had teammates who decided to hang it up and I would ask them how they knew when it was time to walk away,” – wrote the 38-year-old. “The answer was almost always the same: You just know. For me, that time is now. Why? Quite simply, I just know.”

This means that Palmer’s NFL career actually ended in Week 7 when he broke his arm in a match against the Los Angeles Rams and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Although the player said back in December that he feels good about returning to the field, it looks like he had a change of hearts.

Carson Palmer played college football at USC for five years, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2002. Cincinnati Bengals took him with the first overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft but didn’t allow him to take a single snap in his rookie season. He was named the team’s starting quarterback in 2004 and led the Bengals to their first winning season in 15 years in 2005. Palmer reached the playoffs with Bengals in 2009 once again, before asking for a trade. He then spent time with Raiders before signing with Cardinals and reviving his career. He compiled a 92-88-1 record with these three teams, finishing his NFL career with 46,247 yards, 294 touchdowns, and 187 interceptions.

Prior to Palmer announcing his retirement, Cardinals’ head coach Bruce Arians revealed he is also walking away from the NFL after 42 years of coaching and 5 years at the helm of the team. Arians explained his decision by saying that he wants to spend more time with his family.

Arizona Cardinals have announced on Thursday that they have placed their quarterback Carson Palmer on injured reserve following a broken arm injury. This means that Palmer will be out for at least eight weeks and the earliest he can find himself on the field is Christmas Eve game against the New York Giants.

Palmer broke his arm in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. Although it was immediately estimated that Palmer’s recovery will take eight weeks or more, a second opinion gave the team hope that their starting quarterback will return earlier.

It depends on what the surgeon says,” – said Cardinals coach Bruce Arians on Monday. “He is a fast healer. He’s had it broken before and basically said he was back in five.

Now, after Palmer underwent a surgery on Wednesday and was placed on IR, those hopes are gone.

After being drafted with the first overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft by Cincinnati Bengals, Carson Palmer spent eight years with the team, before being traded to the Oakland Raiders. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 when the Raiders traded him in exchange for two draft picks. In August, Palmer signed a one-year, $24.35 million contract extension with the Cardinals. The 37-year-old quarterback played 7 games this season for the Cardinals, having 1,978 yards, nine touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Before leaving the game against the Rams, Palmer had 122 passing yards and 1 interception.

With Palmer out, backup Drew Stanton will be promoted as the team’s starting quarterback. He will be backed by Blaine Gabbert, while the team also signed former Chargers quarterback Mike Bercovici to their practice squad.

Arizona Cardinals currently have a 3-4 record and occupy the third spot in the NFC West. The team is on a bye this week and will face the San Francisco 49ers on November 5.
