The Carolina Panthers decided they would not risk losing another defensive standout after being forced to part ways with star defensive end Brian Burns in the offseason. The team announced on Friday that they had signed Pro Bowl defensive tackle Derrick Brown to a four-year extension.

Brown, who was selected seventh overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, was entering the final year of his rookie deal. The extension now ties him with the organization through 2028.

The Panthers didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Brown’s deal is worth $96 million and comes with $63.165 million in guaranteed money. With an average annual salary of $24 million, Brown becomes the league’s fourth highest-paid DT. The top three highest-paid tackles in the NFL: Chris Jones (Kansas City Chiefs), Christian Wilkins (Las Vegas Raiders), and Justin Madubuike (Baltimore Ravens) – also signed their market-setting deals this offseason.

After being selected to the PFWA All-Rookie Team following his first year as a pro, Derrick Brown continued improving his game in the following seasons. His development was particularly notable in 2023 when he set the NFL record for most tackles by a defensive lineman with 103 while also adding 2.0 sacks, 15 QB hits, six pass deflections, and one interception.

Veteran linebacker Jadeveon Clowney has picked the Carolina Panthers as his next landing spot. The news was confirmed by the Panthers on social media on Wednesday.

Signing with the Panthers represents a homecoming of a sort for Clowney. He grew up and played high school football in Rock Hill, South Carolina, a city just 27 miles away from Charlotte, while also attending the University of South Carolina.

The Panthers didn’t disclose financial terms of the deal, but ESPN reports that Clowney will receive a two-year, $20 million contract. The deal could end up being worth up to $24 million and includes bonuses for sacks.

Clowney was forced to settle for a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens last offseason after a controversial split with the Cleveland Browns and underwhelming performances in 2022. The 2014 first-round pick enjoyed a career resurgence in Baltimore, finishing the year with 43 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and 19 QB hits.

While he remained on the free agent market longer than expected, Clowney had a number of suitors including the Ravens, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. However, being close to home ended up giving the Panthers an edge.

“We’re going to be just 30 minutes from home. It’s where we do all our community and foundation work going into season 11. Plus, my Grandaddy is getting older; and last year we had a lot of losses in our family. So honestly, it just feels like a full circle moment being closer,” Clowney told CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson.

The New York Giants made a blockbuster trade on Monday, acquiring star defensive end Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers. The Giants also signed Burns to a new contract as part of the deal.

The Panthers placed a franchise tag on Burns to prevent him from becoming a free agent after the two sides were unable to agree on an extension ahead of the 2023 NLF season. It is unclear whether the two sides discussed a new deal this offseason.

The Giants will reportedly give up a 2024 second-rounder (No. 39) and a 2025 fifth-round pick to acquire Burns. The two teams will also swap fifth-round selections in this year’s draft.

The Giants will give Burns a five-year, $150 million contract that comes with $87.5 million in guaranteed money. This makes Burns the second highest-paid defensive end in the history of the NFL. Only San Francisco 49ers’ Nick Bosa is paid more with a contract that averages $34 million annually.

Brian Burns entered the league in 2019 as the Panthers’ first-round pick. He had his best season as a pro in 2022 with 12.5 sacks, 63 tackles, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble.

Burns, who has two Pro Bowl nods on his resume, managed just 8.0 sacks last season, his lowest since his rookie year.

The Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was caught on video venting his frustration in his open-air suite at the EverBank Stadium during the Panthers’ blowout 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The video in question appeared to show Tepper throwing a drink in the direction of Jaguars fans.

The video was captured with about three minutes left to play in the game as quarterback Bryce Young made an interception. Young also allowed his frustration to get the best of him, throwing a tablet down on the ground in frustration following a sack made earlier in the game. A spokesperson of the Panthers declined to comment when approached by reporters while NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy stated that the league is “aware of the video” and has “no further comment at this time.”

With this loss, the Panthers fell to a 2-14 record, remaining rooted to the bottom of the NFC South while also being guaranteed to exhibit the NFL’s worst team record this season. To add insult to injury, the Chicago Bears own the Panthers’ pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which is the top selection overall.

The Carolina Panthers’ head coach Frank Reich will take over the play-calling duties on the offense for the Week 11 clash against the Dallas Cowboys. Reich himself confirmed the news while talking with reporters on Wednesday.

Reich called plays for the first six weeks of the 2023 NFL season, but the Panthers’ struggles on the offense prompted him to hand over the playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. However, Brown didn’t find any more success than Reich did, with Carolina scoring just two offensive touchdowns.

Explaining his decision, Reich said that his decision wasn’t a reflection of Brown’s abilities but rather him doing what’s best for the team.

“Just to get started, because I know someone will ask — regarding the playcalling — I am gonna resume the playcalling duties,” Reich told reporters. “This is not about Thomas. This is about me, it’s about the team. I’m in the position I’m in because of years of being a successful offensive coordinator and playcaller. We have eight games left, and I just wanna give my attention and everything I can do and everything I can bring to bear to help the offense take a next step.”

The Carolina Panthers currently have the worst record in the league at 1-8. They are 29th in points per game and 25th in total yards gained.

The Carolina Panthers can’t feel good after their Thursday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears. They not only suffered a 16-13 loss but also saw rookie quarterback Bryce Young, who was supposed to be the future of their franchise, deliver another disappointing performance.

Panthers’ offense under Young didn’t score any touchdowns, while the first-overall pick completed just 55.3% of his passes and threw for 185 yards. This was the second time that Young failed to score a touchdown this season, and fourth game he finished with less than 200 passing yards.

Young seemed to have also lost the trust of the Panthers’ coaching staff. Being three points down with less than two minutes on the clock, Carolina faced a fourth-and-10 situation inside the Bears’ half. Instead of giving Young a chance to keep the drive going and win them the game, the Panthers sent kicker Eddy Pineiro to try a 59-yard field goal. Pineiro, who never made a field goal longer than 56 yards, didn’t even reach the uprights with his kick.

After the game, Young spoke about his frustration and the need to improve.

“Being frustrated, however you feel, it’s not going to win you a game, it’s not going to help,” said Young. “You have to turn that and use that in action throughout the week, and then we have to translate it to Sunday or Thursday tonight, whatever. We have to translate it.”

Panthers have to hope that Bryce Young’s early struggles are part of him getting accustomed to the NFL. Otherwise, the franchise’s future looks bleak, considering they traded away next year’s first-round pick to move up in the 2023 draft and select Young.

The Carolina Panthers are shaking things up in an attempt to turn around their disappointing season. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Panthers’ head coach Frank Reich will hand over the play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.

Reich reportedly informed the players about his decision on Monday. The Panthers are on a bye in Week 7, meaning that Brown will get his play-calling debut in Week 8 against the Texas Rangers.

Reich said during the offseason that he intends to give up the play-calling duties to Brown at some point. He probably didn’t plan to do it after only six games, but it appears to be as good a moment as any, considering the struggles the Panthers have had on offense.

Aside from being winless to start the season, the Panthers are yet to see their rookie quarterback Bryce Young take control of the offense in the way they hoped when they selected him with the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Young is completing 63.2% of his passes while throwing for 967 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions in his first year as a pro.

Thomas Brown is well-respected around the league and has a reputation for being a bright offensive mind. After working in college football for a decade, Brown joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 as a running backs coach. He became an assistant head coach the following season and held the role for two years before joining the Panthers.

Brown doesn’t have a lot of play-calling experience either on a college or professional level. The only time he called plays was during parts of the Panthers’ preseason games.

The Carolina Panthers’ rookie quarterback Bryce Young returned to practice on Wednesday after being out since Week 2 with an ankle injury. According to the team’s head coach Frank Reich, Young is progressing well in his return and might start on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Young sprained his ankle in a 17-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 and didn’t practice at all until Wednesday.

“The big thing right now is to see how he responds,” Reich told the reporters. “Because it was good work today. Just have to make sure there’s no major setbacks, no flare-ups. But if he stays on track, then I think things are headed in the right direction.”

Panthers selected Young with the first-overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, believing he could be the franchise quarterback they have been missing since Cam Newton left the franchise. However, the Alabama product has struggled to make an impact at the start of his pro career. He completed just 59.2% of his passes while throwing for 299 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the first two games of the season.

Veteran backup Andy Dalton played well as Young’s replacement in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, finishing the game with 361 yards and two TDs. However, the Panthers view this season as an opportunity for Young to get accustomed to the NFL and want to play him even if Dalton gives them a better chance of winning games.

The Carolina Panthers will be without their rookie signal caller Bryce Young for the Week 3 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft is dealing with an ankle injury, and the Panthers will face the Seahawks with veteran Andy Dalton under center.

According to the Panthers’ head coach Frank Reich, Young got hurt during the Monday Night Football loss to the New Orleans Saints and will be out for one to two weeks. However, as soon as he’s ready, the Alabama product will get back his starting job.

“Bryce has done well this week,” Reich told reporters. “I’m optimistic he’s on the right path. Whatever the soonest he can get back is, he will get back. And when he gets back, he’ll be our guy.”

Young has struggled so far in his young NFL career, completing 59.2% of his passes and throwing for just 299 yards in two games. He has two passing touchdowns and has thrown two interceptions.

Dalton, who is in his 13th season as a pro, is expected to provide a boost to the Panthers’ offense thanks to his experience and reliability. The 35-year-old is 83−77−2 as a starter, completing 62.5% of his passes and throwing for 38,150 yards, 244 touchdowns, and 144 picks.

The Carolina Panthers Hall of Honor is getting two new members later this year. The franchise announced earlier this week that defensive end Julius Peppers and wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad are set to be inducted in their HOH at the halftime of the Week 7 home game against the Houston Texans.

Peppers was drafted by the Panthers in 2002 and spent the first eight years of his NFL career in Carolina. He made four All-Pro teams and earned six Pro Bowl honors during that time. He later played with the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers before rejoining the Panthers and retiring with the franchise in 2018.

Peppers still holds Panthers’ franchise records for most sacks (97) and forced fumbles (34). He is also fourth on NFL’s all-time sack leaders list with 159.5 career sacks and is the only player in NFL history to have at least 150 sacks and 10 interceptions.

Muhammad played 11 of his 14 years in the league with the Panthers. He was a two-time Pro Bowler and had one First-Team All-Pro selection while with the franchise.

Muhammad currently holds six franchise records, including the most receiving touchdowns in a season with 16. His 85-yard touchdown catch in Super Bowl XXXVIII still stands as the longest TD reception in Super Bowl history.

“Muhsin Muhammad and Julius Peppers were drafted by the Panthers. Both became All-Pros here. Both came back to Carolina to finish their careers. This is another homecoming, a permanent one,” said Panthers owner David Tepper in a statement.
