The Panthers announced the news with a statement from owner David Tepper, who thanked Reich for “his dedication and service”. Tepper said that special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will take over as a head coach on an interim basis.

Reich is out after the Panthers suffered a 17-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The loss dropped them to 1-10, the worst record in the league.

The Panthers hired Reich in January and later traded up in the 2023 NFL Draft to take Alabama’s quarterback Bryce Young with the first overall pick. The Carolina Panthers Hall of Honor is getting two new members later this year. The franchise announced earlier this week that defensive end Julius Peppers and wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad are set to be inducted in their HOH at the halftime of the Week 7 home game against the Houston Texans.

Peppers was drafted by the Panthers in 2002 and spent the first eight years of his NFL career in Carolina. He made four All-Pro teams and earned six Pro Bowl honors during that time. He later played with the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers before rejoining the Panthers and retiring with the franchise in 2018.

Peppers still holds Panthers’ franchise records for most sacks (97) and forced fumbles (34). He is also fourth on NFL’s all-time sack leaders list with 159.5 career sacks and is the only player in NFL history to have at least 150 sacks and 10 interceptions.

Muhammad played 11 of his 14 years in the league with the Panthers. He was a two-time Pro Bowler and had one First-Team All-Pro selection while with the franchise.

Muhammad currently holds six franchise records, including the most receiving touchdowns in a season with 16. His 85-yard touchdown catch in Super Bowl XXXVIII still stands as the longest TD reception in Super Bowl history.

Caldwell was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2011, where he won the 2019 AFC Championship. He then coached the Detroit Lions from 2014 until 2017. He obtained winning records with both teams; 26-22 with the Colts and 62-50 with the Lions. He also reached the postseason twice with each team.

Reich has still not divulged whether he will hire an offensive coordinator or call the plays himself. He is believed to currently be targeting Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach/tight ends coach Thomas Brown for the role. According to reports, Brown is due to have a second interview with the Panthers this week.

Evero spent last season as the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator. New Broncos’ coach Sean Payton agreed to let Evero out of his contract with the team so that he could acquire the freedom to pursue other jobs.

Before entering the running for his new defensive coordinator role, Evero had interviewed for the position of Panthers head coach. He also applied for head coaching jobs with the Arizona Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts.

Under Evero, the Broncos finished within the top 10 in the league in total defense and rushing defense despite being hit by an array of injury setbacks. For one stretch of the season leading up to Christmas Day, the Broncos had the top-scoring defense in the NFL.

Overall, the Panthers’ defense is considered to be that of a team ranked seventh to 10th in the NFL. While Carolina typically plays with a 4-3 defensive base, the team may be shifted to Evero’s 3-4 setup.
