The Carolina Panthers are shaking things up in an attempt to turn around their disappointing season. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Panthers’ head coach Frank Reich will hand over the play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.

Reich reportedly informed the players about his decision on Monday. The Panthers are on a bye in Week 7, meaning that Brown will get his play-calling debut in Week 8 against the Texas Rangers.

Reich said during the offseason that he intends to give up the play-calling duties to Brown at some point. He probably didn’t plan to do it after only six games, but it appears to be as good a moment as any, considering the struggles the Panthers have had on offense.

Aside from being winless to start the season, the Panthers are yet to see their rookie quarterback Bryce Young take control of the offense in the way they hoped when they selected him with the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Young is completing 63.2% of his passes while throwing for 967 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions in his first year as a pro.

Thomas Brown is well-respected around the league and has a reputation for being a bright offensive mind. After working in college football for a decade, Brown joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 as a running backs coach. He became an assistant head coach the following season and held the role for two years before joining the Panthers.

Brown doesn’t have a lot of play-calling experience either on a college or professional level. The only time he called plays was during parts of the Panthers’ preseason games.

The Carolina Panthers senior assistant Jim Caldwell revealed that his search for a head coaching role has come to an end. The 68-year-old Caldwell was previously the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions, the latter of which he was dismissed from in 2017.

“Right now, the only job that I’m concerned about is the job I do here, right here and now,” Caldwell announced, signalling his intention to stay on with the Panthers. “I’m not worried about the future or anything else. I don’t plan on being a head coach from this point forward.”

Since losing his job with the Lions, Caldwell has interviewed for over half a dozen head coaching jobs, including the opening left by the Panthers and the Denver Broncos.

Frank Reich ultimately landed the head coaching job, beating eight other candidates to the position. He subsequently hired Caldwell as a senior assistant, recognizing Caldwell’s experience and relying on him to report on all phases of the Panthers’ game.

A veteran of the game, Caldwell has been on the coaching staff of two Super Bowl-winning teams—in 2006, he was the assistant head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and in 2012 he served as the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens.

The New Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich completed his final appointment to his coaching staff, hiring Thomas Brown as offensive coordinator on Friday. Brown decided to join the Panthers after his application to become the Houston Texans’ head coach was unsuccessful.

Brown has spent the last 12 seasons as a coaching assistant in the NFL. He spent the last two seasons at the Los Angeles Rams, serving as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach last season. He was the team’s assistant head coach/running backs coach during his first season with the Rams when the team went on to win the Super Bowl.

While it remains unclear whether Brown will call plays on Reich’s behalf, Brown did admit during his introductory news conference that this is a part of the job that he enjoys.

The 36-year-old Brown joins fellow new additions Ejiro Evero, Tem Lukabu, Bert Watts, and Devin Fitzsimmons. Evero joined as the team’s defensive coordinator, Lukabu as outside linebackers coach, Watts as safeties coach, and Fitzsimmons as assistant special teams coach.

The Carolina Panthers have reached an agreement to sign Ejiro Evero as the team’s new defensive coordinator, making him the latest appointment to the coaching staff of new head coach Frank Reich.

Evero spent last season as the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator. New Broncos’ coach Sean Payton agreed to let Evero out of his contract with the team so that he could acquire the freedom to pursue other jobs.

Before entering the running for his new defensive coordinator role, Evero had interviewed for the position of Panthers head coach. He also applied for head coaching jobs with the Arizona Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts.

Under Evero, the Broncos finished within the top 10 in the league in total defense and rushing defense despite being hit by an array of injury setbacks. For one stretch of the season leading up to Christmas Day, the Broncos had the top-scoring defense in the NFL.

Overall, the Panthers’ defense is considered to be that of a team ranked seventh to 10th in the NFL. While Carolina typically plays with a 4-3 defensive base, the team may be shifted to Evero’s 3-4 setup.

After being wiped out of the playoffs by Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints, the Carolina Panthers are making a couple of changes in their coaching staff. The team will now look for a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after firing Mike Shula and Ken Dorsey on Tuesday. This might be a bit unexpected since the man who made the call, Panthers’ head coach Ron Rivera said on Monday that he doesn’t intend to make any changes to his coaching staff.

Rivera explained his decision, saying that after he re-evaluated everything and had a talk with GM Marty Hurney, he decided the team needs a different perspective.

I came to the conclusion going forward the thing we needed to do was bring in a different perspective, different ideas in terms of going forward to what I believe is our ultimate goal and that is winning a Super Bowl” – said Rivera.

The Panthers didn’t find much success in the offense with Shula as their coordinator since they never were in the top 10 during the five year he was with the team. They also finished the 2017 regular season as 19th in total offense.

According to reports, the Panthers’ have already identified the names to replace Shula and Dorsey. Their top choice for the OC position is Norv Turner, former Raiders and Chargers head coach who last served as OC with the Minnesota Vikings. Reportedly, the Panthers have already agreed on a contract with Turner. The candidates for QB coach have not been discussed.

Another issue for the Panthers is the looming exit of the defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who already had interviews for a head coaching position with the New York Giants, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Indianapolis Colts. In case that Wilks chooses to leave the Panthers, Rivera said he will find someone who is already on his staff to fill the position.
