NHL veteran Paul Stastny announced his retirement on Tuesday, lowering the curtain on a 17-year career. During the course of his impactful career, Stastny transformed from a first-line, power-play-type forward to a third- and fourth-line specialist.

Stastny revealed that he made his retirement decision in the fall. “I haven’t filed anything, but in early September we decided we were done. I didn’t put anything out on social media or anything,” he explained. “I kind of came into the league quietly, and I’m leaving the league quietly. That’s the way I like it. All the people close to me know, and then word always gets out eventually.”

Playing for the Carolina Hurricanes last season, Stastny scored nine goals and 22 points. Selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the 2005 draft, the 37-year-old player also played for the Vegas Golden Knights and spent two stints at the Winnipeg Jets.

The Carolina Hurricanes are the first team in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs to secure a spot in the conference finals. The Hurricanes wrapped up their second-round series against the New Jersey Devils with a 3-2 overtime win on Thursday.

The Hurricanes will now wait for the conclusion of the series between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs to learn about their opponent in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Devils, who were blown out in Game 4 in a 1-6 loss, showed signs of life on Thursday by holding the lead twice. However, the Canes were determined to end the series after five games and managed to get back both times to force overtime.

In overtime, it was Carolina who showed more mental toughness. Seven minutes into the period, Jesper Fast deflected a shot by Jesperi Kotkaniemi into the goal and secured the Canes’ return to the conference finals for the first time since 2018–19.

Speaking with the reporters after the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour said that the team would take some time to enjoy the achievement before setting their focus on the next opponent.

“We’re stacking memories here, and they’re giving them to me, too. So it’s pretty special,” said Rod Brind’Amour.

After exiting the Stanley Cup playoffs in the second round for two consecutive postseasons, the Carolina Hurricanes decided to make a splashy move they hope will help them make that next step. The Canes orchestrated a blockbuster trade on Wednesday that saw them acquire All-Star defenseman Brent Burns from the San Jose Sharks.

In order to get Burns, who has a Norris Trophy on his resume, Carolina gave up forward Steven Lorentz, goalkeeper Eetu Makiniemi (AHL), and a third-round selection in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. As part of the deal, the Sharks will also send forward Lane Pederson (AHL).

The move makes a lot of sense for the Sharks since it seems like they still have a long way to go before returning to the playoffs. While Burns has become a franchise legend since coming to San Jose in 2011, the Sharks will benefit from having part of his $8 million cap hit off their books. Picking up a fine player in Lorentz also doesn’t hurt.

On the other hand, the Canes are all in on maximizing their championship window. Despite the fact that Burns turned 37 in March and will be 40 in the final year of his deal, Carolina believes the veteran will be a difference-maker in years to come.

“Since it’s been announced, eight or nine of our current players have already texted me saying, ‘Wow, they can’t believe we got this guy,'” the Canes’ general manager Don Waddell told reporters. “That’s always a positive sign.”

Brent Burns spent the first seven years of his NHL career with the Minnesota Wild before arriving in San Jose. He has six All-Star nods, two First All-Star Team appearances, and one award for the best NHL defenseman. Burns played a total of 1,251 games in the NHL, scoring 227 goals and providing 550 goals for a total of 777 points.

The Carolina Hurricanes have secured the services of standout winger Andrei Svechnikov for eight more years. Svechnikov, who was a restricted free agent this offseason, inked a new contract with the Canes that will see him stay in Carolina through the 2029/30 NHL season.

The second overall pick in 2018 will earn a $7.75 million base salary over the course of the deal, becoming one of the franchise’s highest-paid players.

Svechnikov and Hurricanes have been reportedly engaged in negotiations for a while now. They first started talking during the 2020/21 season but couldn’t make an agreement that would satisfy both parties. The two sides even discussed going the “short-term contract” before returning to negotiating table in recent weeks and getting the deal done.

According to Svechnikov, he always saw his long-term future with the franchise and never considered going elsewhere.

“It’s actually an easy decision for me,” Svechnikov told reporters on Thursday. “Eight years to play in Carolina, and I want to be a Hurricane.”

Andrei Svechnikov emerged as one of the key players for the rejuvenated Carolina Hurricanes franchise. In his first season with the organization, he had 20 goals and 17 assists in the regular season while helping the team reach Conference Finals for the first time in 10 years.

Svechnikov followed the successful rookie campaign with 61 points (24 goals and 37 assists) in 2019/20 and 42 points (15 goals and 27 assists) in shortened 2020/21. Canes made the playoffs in both of these seasons.

Carolina Hurricanes quest to reach the Stanley Cup Finals has just become tougher as the team lost their defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk for the rest of the playoffs. van Riemsdyk underwent a shoulder surgery over the weekend and is expected to miss four to six months while recovering.

The 27-year-old injured his shoulder in Game 2 of Eastern Conference Semi-Finals series against New York Islanders.

The news was confirmed by Hurricanes’ general manager Don Waddell, who also revealed that the team brought in defenseman Jake Bean from their AHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers in order to replace van Riemsdyk.

Hurricanes, who haven’t been to the playoffs since 2009, will play either Boston Bruins or Columbus Blue Jackets in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Trevor van Riemsdyk started his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015 and spent three years with the organization, winning Stanley Cup in 2015. After being made available by Blackhawks in 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, van Riemsdyk was selected by Las Vegas Golden Knights and then traded to Hurricanes.

Since entering NHL, van Riemsdyk played a total of 315 games and managed to score 14 goals while also adding 47 assists.

Alex Ovechkin hadn’t participated in a fight in the NHL since 2011, but the Capitals’ forward couldn’t resist the chance when challenged by young Carolina defender Andrei Svechnikov.

The Caps led the Hurricanes 2-0 in their opening round playoff series before Carolina thoroughly bested them on Monday.

Some of that frustration boiled over for Ovechkin, who knocked his Russian compatriot flat on the ground after a bit of jawing in the first period of the game.

The Capitals, a heavy favorite in the series, are still in control of the opening round matchup.

The biggest story of the game was probably the fight between the 33-year-old Ovechkin and the 19-year-old Svechnikov.

The Russian defender had to be carted off of the ice and taken to the hospital after his tussle with Ovechkin. His status for the rest of the series is unclear.

Carolina’s 5-0 win was their first NHL playoff victory since the 2009 season. Warren Foegele led the way for the Canes with two goals and an assist.

The series will resume on Thursday night in Raleigh.

It’s been a decade since Carolina Hurricanes made their last Stanley Cup playoffs appearance, but that will soon change. Following a 3-1 win over New Jersey Devils on Thursday, the Hurricanes climbed to a 45-29-7 record which meant they have secured themselves a spot in the postseason.

Carolina also benefited from Washington Capitals’ 2-1 over Montreal Canadiens, who were Hurricanes’ main competition for a place in the playoffs. Canadiens still haven’t lost the chance to get there, however, as they can clinch the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot in their last game of the 2018/19 NHL season against Toronto Maple Leafs.

Carolina Hurricanes faced with many challenges prior to the start of the season, including a change of ownership and having a rookie head coach. They also boosted the NHL’s longest playoff drought and were coming off a year in which they had the lowest attendance in the league. Still, the team managed to turn things around and improve 14 points compared to the last season thanks to their outstanding defense.

“The goal was to get relevant. That’s the first thing,” – said Hurricanes’ coach Rod Brind’Amour. “I felt like we’d kind of fallen off the map, and obviously, we’re not done. This isn’t the final thing. We want to be the best team. But there’s a step that has to be taken, and it’s a huge step to make the playoffs. Can’t say enough about the group — just can’t.”

“It’s exciting, everyone can see all the emotion out of the group and in here right now, there’s still a bit of a vibe,” – added defenseman Justin Faulk. “It’s great, and we’re not happy yet, right? We’re excited, we’re obviously happy, but we’re not done, and that’s not enough just to get into the playoffs, and we know that, and that’s been our mindset the whole year.”

With Scott Darling expected to be out for couple weeks with a lower-body injury, Carolina Hurricanes decided to play it safe by claiming Toronto Maple Leafs’ goalie Curtis McElhinney off waivers. The move was confirmed on Tuesday by Hurricanes president and general manager Don Waddell.

Curtis is a proven NHL goaltender,” – said Waddell in a statement. “Scott Darling is dealing with an injury, and we see this as an opportunity to solidify our depth at the position.

Curtis McElhinney played a total of 18 games in 2017-18 NHL season, going 11-5-1 with a .934 save percentage. Besides Maple Leafs, he also played for five other NHL teams including Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets.

Scott Darling, who had a record 13-21-7 in 43 games last season, suffered the injury during the preseason game against Nashville Predators on Sunday. While Hurricanes’ coach Rod Brind’Amour said that the injury of 29-year-old wasn’t severe, he did say that it could be several weeks before Darling recovers.

He looked good. I hate it for him. It’s a setback no doubt, but that’s why we got Petr (Mrazek),” – Brind’Amour added.

Petr Mrazek is former Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers goalie, who joined the Hurricanes on a one-year, $1.5 million deal in July.

Carolina Hurricanes announced on Tuesday that they are promoting their assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour to be the team’s new head coach. Hurricanes were without a coach since April 20th when Bill Peters decided to opt out of his contract and take over the Calgary Flames. The organization also revealed that the team president Don Waddell will take the role of general manager full-time, after serving as interim GM.

Rod Brind’Amour previously played 10 seasons for the Carolina Hurricanes and captained the team during the 2005-06 season, when the Hurricanes won their first and only Stanley Cup. Brind’Amour retired from professional hockey in 2010, finishing his career with 1,484 career games (23rd in all-time NHL games played) in which he scored 452 goals alongside 732 assists. He stayed with the organization following his retirement as assistant coach and development coach.

Rod is the greatest leader in the history of this franchise, and has earned the opportunity to take charge of our locker room,” – said Waddell after the announcement. “We spoke to a number of candidates for this position, but our conversations with staff and players consistently returned to the same person.

Rod’s fresh ideas, ability to motivate and understanding of what it takes to bring a championship to Raleigh will help our young team take the next step toward competing to bring the Cup back to North Carolina.” – he added.

Carolina Hurricanes finished the 2017-18 with a 36-35-11 record and missed out on the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season.

Williams was drafted 28th overall in the 2000 draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. He was traded to Carolina in 2004. During the Hurricane’s championship season in 2006, Williams had a career-high 76 points.

After his stint with the Kings, Williams played two seasons with the Washington Capitals. The team won Presidents’ Trophies in both of those seasons as the team that finished the regular season with the most points.

Williams then returned to Carolina for another two seasons. After taking a year off, the 39-year-old resigned with the ‘Canes for the 2019-2020 season to finish out his career. He retires with 796 career points (320 goals and 477 assists).
