Former LAFC striker Carlos Vela is leaning towards staying in MLS. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Vela is currently in advanced talks with San Jose Earthquakes.

Vela’s contract with LAFC expired at the end of the 2023 MLS campaign, and it was believed that the 2019 MLS MVP would return to their native Mexico. LAFC also showed interest in re-signing him, although on a less lucrative contract.

Now, Earthquakes are believed to be in the leading position to sign Vela. The negotiations between the two sides have been progressing lately, and there is reportedly a good chance that the deal will get over the finishing line soon.

Carlos Vela joined LAFC in 2018 as the franchise’s first-ever designated player. He immediately became one of the biggest stars in MLS and went on to be honored with the MLS Best XI selection three times. His best season in MLS came in 2019 when he scored 34 goals and won the MLS Golden Boot and MLS MVP Award. In 2022, he also helped LAFC win the MLS Cup.

Vela previously played with Arsenal, Osasuna, and Real Sociedad, among other teams. He also made 72 appearances for Mexico’s national team before retiring from international soccer following the 2018 World Cup.

As Major League Soccer prepares for its return to the pitch in a summer tournament in Orlando, Florida, LAFC received news on Monday that it will leave the league without one of its biggest stars.

The league’s leading goal-scorer last year, forward Carlos Vela of Los Angeles FC, revealed that he would not enter the Orlando “bubble” and would instead opt out of the season, choosing to stay at home with his family.

Vela, the father of two young children and whose wife is expecting another child in the coming months, informed his team that he was uncomfortable with the idea of being separated from his family and his pregnant wife for such a long stretch of time.

The former Arsenal and Real Sociedad player, who scored 36 goals for LAFC last season and won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award, will leave his team with a huge hole in its attack, hurting its chances to win the tournament.

LAFC general manager John Thorrington was completely supportive of Vela’s decision, however, stating, “LAFC fully supports and respects the difficult decision Carlos and his family have made to not participate in the MLS Is Back Tournament. We have had numerous conversations with Carlos throughout this process and understand his unique situation and the importance of Carlos being home with his family at this time.”

Fans will instead have to wait for next season to see Vela take the pitch again.

LAFC’s striker Carlos Vela surprisingly emerged as a target for La Liga giants Barcelona, who are reportedly considering making a formal approach for the 29-year-old Mexican. Vela was recently asked about Barcelona’s interest in his services, but he declined to give reporters more information saying only that he is “happy with his current club.

“They are issues for the clubs and agents,” – Vela told ESPN. “I’m relaxed, working on the preseason and the most important thing is to be happy in the place you are. In the future, we’ll see what happens.”

If the transfer ends up getting trough, Carlos Vela would be returning to a familiar setting given the fact that he previously played for four Spanish teams including Real Sociedad.

“Whatever I may decide or happens I’ll be happy because I’m loving being in Los Angeles with my team enjoying the day-to-day and I don’t have anything to lose in any case,” – he added.

It remains unclear how serious Barcelona will be about their attempts to lure Vela back to Europe, given the fact that they are pursuing several other targets as well.

After spending the majority of his career in Europe, Carlos Vela decided to join LAFC in the summer of 2017, becoming the team’s first ever designated player. He made his debut in MLS in March 2018, and went on to play a total of 32 games in the last season in which he scored 15 goals. He was named into the MLS Best XI for 2018 regular season.
