The Minnesota Twins’ fans seemed to have lost patience with their struggling star Carlos Correa. During a 6-1 loss to the San Diego Padres, the spectators at Target Field treated Correa with a series of loud boos, making it clear that they were unhappy with his performances.

Correa was considered a big coup for the Twins when he signed a six-year, $200 million contract with the team in the offseason. But the two-time All-Star has been playing poorly so far in 2023, and his struggles were on full display against the Padres. He went 0-for-5 in the game and saw his season average drop to .185.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Correa said that he understands why the fans are unhappy with him.

“I’d boo myself too with the amount of money I’m making if I’m playing like that,” said Correa. “Fans want production, and fans want a team that’s going to compete out there and win games. It’s to be expected when you play poorly.”

Correa isn’t the only Twins player who underperformed at the start of the season, with Joey Gallo and Jose Miranda also failing to find their rhythm at-bats. However, with the salary he is receiving, Correa is the one receiving the majority of the criticism.

“I’m going to keep working and keep focusing on the things I can control, and the results will come,” he added.

Despite Correa’s struggles, the Twins are still keeping their heads above water. They have a 19-17 record and sit at the top of AL Central with two wins advantage over the second-placed Cleveland Guardians.

Carlos Correa’s free agency has just got another surprising twist. After his moves to the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets didn’t materialize, the All-Star shortstop now decided to return to the Minnesota Twins.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Correa and the Twins have agreed to a six-year, $200 million deal. The contract, which is pending a physical review, includes a vesting option for additional four years and $70 million.

After a strong 2022 campaign with the Twins, which saw him bat .291 with 22 home runs, Correa opted out of the final two years of his contract to hit the free agency. The 28-year-old immediately became one of the biggest names on the market and ended up landing a 13-year, $350 million contract with the Giants.

However, the deal with the Giants came to a halt hours before Correa was set to be officially introduced as the franchise expressed concerns about his surgically repaired left ankle. The San Francisco team wanted more time to reconsider their commitment, but the player’s agent Scott Boras quickly pivoted and got a 12-year, $315 million offer from the Mets.

The Mets ended up pulling the plug as well since they discovered the same issues with Correa’s ankle the Giants did and wanted to renegotiate. The two sides spent a couple of weeks trying to settle their differences, but the talks went nowhere.

At that point, Boras circled back to the Twins, who were more comfortable with offering a longer deal to Correa since they already had him in the building for one year. As a result, they are getting one of the best shortstops in the game on a deal that could easily turn out to be a bargain.

The spending spree in MLB has continued this week with another record-setting free agent signing. According to multiple reports, All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa signed a 13-year, $350 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. The deal is the biggest ever given to a shortstop.

Correa’s new deal is now the fourth-richest in the history of the league, trailing the ones given to Mike Trout ($426.5 million) Mookie Betts ($365 million), and Aaron Judge ($360 million). The contract reportedly comes with a no-trade clause and has no opt-outs.

This was the second-straight year Carlos Correa entered the free agency. He first became a free agent after an All-Star campaign in 2021 with the Houston Astros but failed to get a long-term offer he liked. He then decided to do a three-year, $105.3 million deal with the Minnesota Twins that had opt-outs after each year.

Correa’s gamble paid off, as he ended up hitting .291 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs in 2022. He also added a league-leading .983 fielding percentage to the mix, making it a certainty that he’ll have a better market if he tries the free agency again.

This offseason proved to be quite generous to shortstops, with Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts signing big-time deals of their own earlier this month. Correa remained patient and ended up getting the best deal of them all.

The Giants had the money to spend and first pursued Judge before he re-signed with the NY Yankees. They quickly turned to Correa after that, feeling that he could be a franchise cornerstone for them and someone they could build a championship-contending team around. The time will tell if that is the case, but baseball fans in San Francisco have no reason not to feel good about their future.

Houston Astros announced on Wednesday that they are placing shortstop Carlos Correa on the injured list after the 24-year-old suffered a fractured rib. According to Astros’ general manager Jeff Luhnow, Correa will miss four to six weeks of action while rehabbing.

The team called up Myles Straw from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

Luhnow told reporters that Correa got injured on Tuesday morning at his home, but didn’t want to provide further details.

“It’s more frustrating for him,” – Luhnow added. “Our team is built to withstand a few injuries and should be fine … We also have to remmeber he didn’t start playing until June in his rookie year and won the (American League Rookie of the Year) award.”

“He can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. The focus is to get him back healthy, help us in the second half and really obviously help in the postseason because that’s where we need him the most.”

Correa made 50 appearances for Houston this season and was a difference maker for the team during his time on the field. He batted .295, managing 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this year.

The injury couldn’t come at a worse moment for the Astros, as they previously lost outfielder George Springer and infielder Aledmys Diaz to hamstring injuries. To make things worse, their All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve is still not fully fit to play as he suffers from right leg fatigue.
