Current unified super middleweight world champion Canelo Alvarez rarely shied away from a fight regardless of his opponent’s stature in the boxing world. But he seems set on avoiding WBO middleweight belt holder Demetrius Andrade. And it isn’t because he’s scared.

Andrade has long wanted an opportunity to face Alvarez in the ring and challenged him publicly on numerous occasions. Still, his chance will most likely never come as Alvarez simply believes he doesn’t deserve it.

“He’s a horrible fighter,” Alvarez told Brian Custer during his appearance on The Last Stand Podcast. “I’m never going to fight with him. He hasn’t fought with anybody.”

While it’s partially true that Andrade still hasn’t had a high-profile opponent, his track record in the ring is hard to ignore. The 33-year-old American is undefeated with 30 career wins, 18 of which came via knockout. He held titles in two weight classes and has defended the WBO middleweight title four times so far.

Canelo Alvarez’s unwillingness to react to Andrade’s challenge might have to do with the Mexican’s attempt to become an undisputed super middleweight champion. Alvarez currently holds WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring belts and only needs an IBF belt to complete the sweep. He’ll have a chance to achieve this goal on 6th November at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas when he is set to face IBF’s champion Caleb Plant.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez knocked down Rocky Fielding four times at the Madison Square Garden to win the match in the third round on Saturday.

Despite being his debut in New York, the Mexican dominated Rocky with his quick left-hard punches that led to a third-round TKO to win the WBA super middleweight title. Canelo wore out his opponent with punches mainly to his chest and knocked him down four times in front of a sellout 20,112 fans.

“That was the plan in the gym, to hit the body and then move up, and that’s the result,” -Alvarez said.

Fielding came to the game with a 27-2 record, 15 of which were knockouts. He also had a five-inch height advantage. However, the British former WBA champion failed to land anything that gave him an advantage over Canelo.

There wasn’t even a contestant. Canelo was the better boxer from the start to the end of the fight. The Mexican landed 35 of 73 punches to Rocky’s body and occasionally forced the Englishman against the rope.

Alvarez was also fresh off a fight in which he won over Gennady Golovkin in September and had a small cut from the fight that wasn’t properly healed.

The fight was his first in the 11-game, $365 million deal with streaming network DAZN.

Golden Boy Promotion’s Oscar De La Hoya is threatening that Canelo Alvarez will not fight against GGG on September 15th.

De La Hoya has suggested that the Mexican could end up fighting against Spike O’Sullivan rather than Golovkin.

A fight against O’Sullivan would likely struggle to sell more than 250,000 views and should be an easy win for Canelo. On the other hand, a fight between Canelo and GGG would easily attract more than 1.5 million viewers due to the fact that both fighters are considered to be the best of this generation.

Last September, the two fighters fought to a controversial draw which sold 1.3 million buyouts. The two were meant to have a rematch on May 5th, however, Canelo had to pull out after he tested positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol.

The fight was supposed to be split 65-35 in Canelo’s favor.

Golovkin should not be accepting anything less than 50-50. He is a respected fighter and Canelo was the reason why the first fight did not go ahead so he should be the person who makes a sacrifice.

We won’t see Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin rematch, at least not on May 5. Alvarez announced on Tuesday that he is withdrawing from the rematch due to a possible extension of his suspension by Nevada State Athletic Commission. Canelo Alvarez was temporary suspended for testing positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol on two occasions, while the final decision about the suspension will be made on April 18 at a hearing scheduled in Las Vegas.

The first match between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin took place in September 2017, ending in a controversial draw, with many people thinking that Golovkin deserved a win.

We’re going to have to cancel the May 5 rematch,” – Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez said at a press conference. “As you all know there is a hearing on April 18 and it’s extremely unlikely this will get properly resolved by then and we need enough time to promote this fight.”

It is expected that Canelo Alvarez will receive a one-year suspension since this is his first offense. Golden Boy Promotions hope that the suspension might be reduced to six months after an appeal, which would clear Alvarez for the rematch that would then take place in August or September.

I am truly shocked about what has happened and for those who have doubts and suspicions about my integrity, I have always been and always will be clean fighter,” – said Alvarez in a statement. “I want to apologize to HBO, Tecate and Hennessy and all my other sponsors, the media and to everyone who is involved in the promotion of this event, and especially to the fans. I respect this sport. I will always be a clean fighter.
