Goalkeeper Cam Ward spent the first 13 years of his NHL career with Carolina Hurricanes before leaving the team last season to sign with Chicago Blackhawks. One year later, however, Ward is back in Carolina.

On Wednesday, Ward signed a one-day deal with the Hurricanes and then closed the curtain on his career. The 35-year-old goalie retires as the franchise’s career leader in regular-season games played with 668 while also holding several other records including wins (318) and saves (17,261).

“Cam was a cornerstone for this organization for more than a decade,” – said Hurricanes’ president and general manager, Don Waddell. “From his ‘Cam’s Champs’ program to his efforts with the Hurricanes Foundation and time spent teaching at our hockey camps, he had a tremendous impact on this community. We’re proud that he has chosen to retire with the Carolina Hurricanes.”

Cam Ward made his NHL debut with Hurricanes in 2005/2006 season when he helped the team to win their first and only Stanley Cup. For his efforts, he received Conn Smythe Trophy (NHL Playoff MVP) trophy, becoming only the fourth rookie in NHL history to achieve this.

“It was an honor and a privilege to wear the Hurricanes jersey for 13 years,” – said Ward in a statement. “Throughout it all, what stayed clear to me was my love for this organization, this city, and this fan base. It is why my family and I call Raleigh home and will continue to call it home. I appreciate all of the support the fans gave me throughout the highs and the lows. I thank you.”

Ward’s other career achievements include an All-Star appearance in 2011 and winning a gold medal at (IIHF) 2007 World Championship and silver medal at 2008’s World Championship with Canada national team.
