One of the biggest surprises of this NFL offseason remains the fact that veteran quarterback Cam Newton still doesn’t have a team for 2020. Newton, who won the NFL MVP award in 2015, was released by Carolina Panthers in March and remains unsigned ever since.

While several factors played a part in the 31-year-old signal-caller’s ongoing free agent status, many analysts think that Newton’s health issues remain the biggest stumbling block for NFL teams to offer him a contract. And his former Panthers’ coach Ron Rivera appears to agree.

Rivera recently made an appearance on ‘Fox Football Now’ with Jay Glazer, where he said that the season-ending injuries in the previous two seasons made it tough for Newton to land a job in recent months.

“I think that’s probably the biggest thing, more than anything else,” said Rivera. “You’ve got to know. The foot and the shoulder will be the two biggest concerns everybody has.”

Cam Newton’s shoulder injury dates back to 2017 when he underwent surgery on it during the offseason. The issues returned towards the end of 2018 regular season, and he ended up missing Week 16 and Week 17 games before undergoing another procedure in early 2019. Newton recovered in time to start the past season but ended up playing just two games before being ruled out for the season due to a foot injury.

Newton was on track to recover completely from the injury, but the coronavirus pandemic didn’t give teams an opportunity to gather more intel on him so the majority of them decided to avoid the risk.

Reportedly, Newton himself is not in a hurry to sign with a team at the moment and is willing to wait for his opportunity. He might get one later in the season in case one team has an underperforming QB or their starter suffers an injury.

Aside from winning an MVP award, Newton also has three Pro Bowl appearances and one All-Pro selection. He has 29,041 career passing yards and 182 passing touchdowns to go with 4,806 rushing yards and 58 TDs.

Since Jacksonville Jaguars still haven’t figured out their quarterback situation, the team’s running back Leonard Fournette decided to pitch an intriguing idea to his front office. According to Fournette, Jags should sign the 2015’s MVP Cam Newton.

Making an appearance on ESPN’s First Take, Fournette said that he believes Newton’s experience and dynamic playmaking would benefit Jacksonville and boost their offense.

“Cam went to the Super Bowl,” said Fournette. “He’s a great guy. I’ve been knowing Cam for a minute now.”

Fournette explained that he doesn’t think Newton should immediately have the job over the second-year signal-caller Gardner Minshew, calling for a friendly competition.

“And like I told some people that talked to me, it’s no disrespect to [Gardner Minshew],” he added. “I’m just trying to get in the best position as a team as we can [to] win. That’s all that was about. Just friendly competition ’cause that brings out the best in people.”

Jags decided to trade Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles to Chicago Bears earlier this offseason, leaving Minshew as an only valid option on the QB position. The 23-year-old is coming off a solid first NFL season in which he passed for 3,271 yards and 21 touchdowns, both franchise records for a rookie.

However, not many people think that Minshew is a long-term solution for Jacksonville. One of those people seems to be Fournette and it will be interesting to see the dynamic between the two if Jags end up not signing Newton.

It turns out that Carolina Panthers didn’t move on from their franchise QB Cam Newton because of health concerns. According to Panthers’ new head coach Matt Rhule, the team simply believed Teddy Bridgewater was a better fit for them.

Panthers announced their decision to part ways with Newton in late March, bringing to an end his nine-year stint with the organization to an end. Shortly after that, the team snapped up Bridgewater from the free agency market and handed him a three-year, $63 million deal.

“We saw the opportunity to get Teddy and really felt like he was the right fit for us,” Rhule explained the team’s decision in a recent video conference with reporters. “We went ahead and made that call, not an easy call, but one we thought was the best one moving forward.”

Rhule added that one of the reasons why they went with Bridgewater is his familiarity with the offense that the team’s new offensive coordinator Joe Brady wants to run. The duo worked together in 2018 when Brady was an offensive assistant with the Saints.

“We felt like this was the time to go in this direction and bring Teddy on,” he explained. “His relationship with Joe, knowing the offense, the things that he has done in this offense just made sense to us.”

Panthers first tried to trade Cam Newton after bringing Bridgewater but weren’t able to find a trade partner. The teams were reluctant to give up assets as Newton missed all but two games in 2019 due to foot injury. Carolina ended up releasing the 30-year-old, making him a free agent.

After nearly a decade in Carolina, an NFL MVP Award, and one trip to the Super Bowl, quarterback Cam Newton’s time with the Panthers has come to a close.

Newton was released on Tuesday, almost nine years after being drafted as the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the NFC South franchise.

Few could have seen this coming just a few years ago when Newton was one of the league’s best players and the team’s leader, but injuries and circumstances have brought the quarterback’s time in Carolina to a close.

The Panthers announced last week that they granted Newton permission to seek a trade, just before the news that they would sign former Saints backup Teddy Bridgewater to a deal to become the team’s starter.

Newton denied that report emphatically, implying that his desire was to remain a Panther.

Now, after apparently finding no trade partners for the highly-paid quarterback, Carolina has decided to simply release him. They will save $19.1 million in salary-cap space by releasing him, money that was desperately needed after inking Bridgewater to a three-year, $63 million contract.

Newton will be able to sign with any team after his release, opening up the possibility for the 30-year-old quarterback to revive his career elsewhere.

Quarterback Cam Newton’s time with Carolina Panthers has come to an end. Panthers announced on Tuesday that they have allowed Newton to seek a trade that would bring to an end his nine-year stint with the organization.

The news was confirmed by Panthers’ general manager Marty Hurney, who revealed that this was the result of a meeting he had with Newton and his camp.

“One of the distinct pleasures of my career was selecting Cam with the first pick in the 2011 draft,” said Hurney. “Every year difficult decisions are made and they are never easy. We have been working with Cam and his agent to find the best fit for him moving forward and he will always be a Carolina Panther in our hearts.”

Newton, who is recovering from a foot injury that limited him to just two games in 2019, offered a different side of the story. The 30-year-old went on social media shortly after the news broke, and said that he is “forced” into leaving the franchise.

“Stop with the word play. I never asked for it,” Newton wrote on Instagram. “There is no dodging this one. I love the Panthers to death and will always love you guys. Please do not try and play me or manipulate the narrative and act like I wanted this. You forced me into this. Love”

Following Carolina’s decision to move on from Newton, the team is now expected to pursue one of the quarterbacks available on the free-agent market. According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Panthers will be especially aggressive trying to land former New Orleans Saints’ QB Teddy Bridgewater.  The team also has second-year QB Will Grier and last year’s starter Kyle Allen on the roster.

Cam Newton will leave Carolina as the most accomplished quarterback in the franchise’s history. During his nine-year run with Panthers, Newton led the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015 while winning MVP honors in the same season. He also has three Pro Bowl appearances.

Newton holds numerous Panthers’ franchise records, including most career completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.

When Carolina Panther’s Cam Newton went down with a foot injury in mid-September, it was expected he will miss a couple of weeks while recovering. But seven weeks later, Newton is still sidelined, and reportedly he isn’t even close to returning to the field.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Newton’s recovery isn’t going as expected and that his foot isn’t getting better despite the 30-year-old being in limited activity and not playing football. According to Rapoport, Newton will now visit renowned foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in order to try and see why he isn’t recovering.

After missing two games last season with a shoulder injury, Cam Newton recovered in time to start the 2019 season. However, he struggled in Week 1 and 2, completing 56.2 percent of his passes for 572 and no touchdowns. Newton ended up sitting out the Week 3 games, and it was later revealed that he has been dealing with a foot injury since training camp and that he was diagnosed with Lisfranc fracture.

After Newton went down, second-year QB Kyle Allen took over the starting job. Allen was off to a great start, winning the first four games, and even sparking a debate that he should be Carolina’s quarterback moving forward regardless of Newton’s recovery.

Allen led the Panthers to 4-1 record in his first five starts, throwing for 1,059 yards, seven TDs, and three interceptions.

Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton might be joining the long list of veteran quarterbacks who won’t be on the field for Week 3. Panthers confirmed on Tuesday that Newton aggravated the left foot injury, with NFL network reporting that this could cause him to miss the Sunday’s game against Arizona Cardinals.

Newton, who suffered the initial injury in the preseason, felt his foot was “sore” during the Week 2 loss against Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The issue made him miss Tuesday and Wednesday’s practices while he is reportedly still in the walking boot.

Panthers, however, aren’t willing to reveal much detail at the moment. The team’s general manager Marty Hurney told The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue that there is currently no timetable for the 30-year-old signal-caller and that his status is day-to-day.

After missing the last two games of 2018 with a shoulder injury, Cam Newton looked quite rusty entering this season. In the first two games, he completed just 55.7 percent of his passes while throwing for 563 yards. The alarming thing, however, was that he failed to score a single touchdown and has negative two yards rushing.

If Newton doesn’t recover in time, Panthers, who are currently 0-2, will probably roll with second-year QB Kyle Allen on Sunday. Allen played two games in his rookie season and managed to complete 64.5 percent of his passes for 266 yards and two TDs.

Carolina Panthers might have quarterback Cam Newton ready for the season opener after all. Newton was recently diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain in his left foot, but according to general manager Marty Hurney, the team is “cautiously optimistic” he will recover by Week 1.

Newton suffered the injury in Thursday’s preseason game against New England Patriots and was later seen with a walking boot. Still, the x-rays on his foot showed that the injury isn’t as significant as Carolina feared and that the 30-year-old shouldn’t be sidelined for a long period.

“It’s really hard to put a timeframe because it depends how he responds each day,” – said Hurney. “But as I said, we feel this has got a chance to come around quick enough where he’ll be ready to play Week 1. We’ll see how it goes.”

The game against the Pats was Cam Newton’s first preseason appearances as he spent the first part of the year recovering from shoulder surgery. Newton had issues with his throwing should for the better part of 2018, but decided to play through pain. He was eventually sidelined after Week 14 when Panthers lost chances to get into playoffs.

Newton finished 2018 by completing career-high 67.5 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,395 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also rushed for 488 yards and four TDs.

It seems like Carolina Panthers could get their star quarterback Cam Newton back earlier than expected. Newton, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in January, recently said that he is pleased with the rehab process and that he thinks he could start throwing the football in time for the training camp.

“I’m feeling great now,” – Newton told ESPN in an interview. “I feel like I do have full strength right now. But me telling the doctor, that is different than, you know, whatever the clearance process may be.”

Newton entered the 2018 season in a great fashion and led the Panthers to a 6-2 record before starting to struggle with his shoulder. The team went on a seven-game losing streak after that, and the 2015 NFL MVP eventually was forced to sit out the final two games of the season due to injury.

While Newton isn’t sure when he will be cleared to play football again, he intends to strictly follow the rehab plan to be as ready as he can be for that moment.

“Rehab is going unbelievable, especially for me during a time now, a lot of uncertainty,” – he added. “For me, the human side of me is uncertain as well. But with the support cast from RV, the head trainer and other people that have been working with me hands on daily, I have no doubt I’ll be ready to rock and roll when they expect me to be back.”

Newton ended the 2018 NFL season by completing 67.9 percent of his passes for 3,395 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also rushed 488 yards and four touchdowns.

Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton delivered some encouraging news about his recovery from shoulder surgery he underwent last week. Newton, who now had two offseason surgeries in the last three years, told reporters on Wednesday that his right shoulder is “good” after the procedure and even “better” than he thought it would be.

“It’s good. It’s good,” – said Newton of his shoulder during his appearance on radio 680 The Fan. “It’s better than I thought it would be. With so much going on throughout this season, I was in fear to see what actually was wrong.”

Cam Newton first experienced issues with soreness in his right shoulder in Week 7, with the injury becoming far more worse as the season progressed. The 29-year-old struggled with his performance, with Panthers embarking on a seven-game losing streak, and ended up missing the final two games of the 2018 season.

“That’s what was so frustrating,” Newton explained. “It didn’t matter how much I would grunt, how much I would muscle up and throw it, it wasn’t going far. You’re looking at your arm like, ‘Geez, Louise! What’s really the issue?’

Despite remaining optimistic about his recovery, Newton declined to give more details about his comeback. Carolina also didn’t want to comment on the topic publicly and refused to give a possible timetable for his return.

In 2018 season, Cam Newton managed to complete career-high 67.9 percent of his passes, while throwing for 3,395 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also rushed for 488 yards and four touchdowns.
