Cincinnati Bengals rookie quarterback Joe Burrow just lost one of his preferred targets through the first two games of the 2020 NFL Season.

Bengals’ head coach Zac Taylor told reporters on Friday that tight end C.J. Uzomah tore his Achilles and is lost for the rest of the season. Uzomah got injured in the fourth quarter of a 30-35 loss against Cleveland Brown on Thursday night.

This is tough news for the Bengals’ offense, considering that Burrow and Uzomah started building a good connection. In Week 1, Uzomah had four catches for 45 yards, while in Week 2, Burrow targeted the 27-year-old TE six times and found him on four occasions for 42 yards and a touchdown.

With Uzomah out, Bengals are expected to rely heavily on 2019’s second-round pick Drew Sample, while veteran Cethan Carter might also get a shot. Cincinnati also has Mitchell Wilcox and Mason Schreck on the practice squad, and could also make an outside addition.

C.J. Uzomah was in his sixth season with the Bengals, who took him in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. So far, Uzomah played 63 NFL games (45 starts) and has 114 catches for 1,098 yards and eight touchdowns.
