The San Francisco Giants were ready to welcome back their star catcher Buster Posey for the 2022 MLB season and beyond. Still, that wasn’t enough to convince the 34-year-old All-Star to continue playing baseball.

Posey officially announced his retirement from the sport at a press conference on Thursday. He cited his wish to spend more time with his family and the physical efforts needed to play at a high level as reasons for his decision.

“It was getting to the point that things that I was enjoying were not as joyful anymore,” Posey said while adding that he intends to remain part of the Giants in some capacity.

After deciding to sit out the 2020 shortened season due to the coronavirus pandemic, Posey returned to action with a stellar campaign in 2021 that saw him hit 18 homers. He also posted a .304 batting average and added 56 RBIs en route to his seventh career All-Star appearance.

Shortly after the Giants’ season ended, the team’s president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi told the media that the organization intends to pick up their option to extend Posey’s contract for 2022. Several reports indicated that San Francisco was also willing to offer him a new deal that would tie him with the franchise for a few more years.

Buster Posey spent his entire MLB career with the San Francisco Giants, and helped the franchise win three World Series titles. He put together a Hall of Fame-worthy resume in the process, winning a number of individual accolades, including the NL Rookie of the Year Award, NL MVP Award in 2011, and four Silver Slugger Awards. Posey retires with a .302 batting average, 158 home runs, and 729 RBIs.

Veteran catcher Buster Posey was one of the key players for the San Francisco Giants team that won the league-leading 107 games in the 2021 MLB regular season. So it’s not surprising that the franchise wants to have the 34-year-old All-Star on their roster next year as well.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, the Giants president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, reiterated Posey’s importance for the team and hinted that the organization intends to exercise the $22 million club option on his contract for 2022.

“I just mentioned that I thought he was the best catcher in baseball this year, so that may be the answer that you’re looking for,” Zaidi said via the San Francisco Chronicle. “Obviously, we want to have conversations with Buster and continue to have internal conversations about that—but having him on this team next year is a high priority.”

Reportedly, the Giants don’t want to stop on just their option and are willing to rework Posey’s contract to add few more years to it. This part might be more challenging, as the player said on several occasions prior that he wants to spend more time with his family and still hasn’t decided about his future in MLB.

The chances of Posey being in San Francisco past 2021 looked slim at the beginning of the season for several reasons. The veteran had major hip surgery in 2018 and then struggled to perform after returning to action in 2019. He then opted out of the shortened 2020 MLB campaign, allowing top prospect Joey Bart to stake a claim for the starting job.

However, Bart didn’t perform well as expected, and the Giants decided to roll with Posey as a starter in 2021 after he rejoined the team. Posey responded with a stellar campaign that saw him batting .304 while hitting 18 home runs and 56 RBIs. He also earned his seventh career All-Star nod.

Despite sitting out the 2020 MLB season, All-Star Buster Posey will get back his spot as the San Francisco Giants’ primary catcher in 2021. This was confirmed to reporters on Tuesday by Giants manager Gabe Kapler.

In Posey’s absence, Giants turned to prospect Joey Bart last season but found little success as the 24-year-old player struggled in his first MLB campaign. And while Kapler didn’t entirely give up on Bart, he believes having Posey in the starting lineup gives his team a better chance of winning.

“We’ll continue to assess his readiness and just think about Buster as a sure-fire lock for our Opening Day roster and the lion’s share of the reps back there,” said Kapler. “It’s kinda difficult to say an exact number of games a week we expect Buster to catch, but obviously everybody on this call knows he’ll be our primary catcher.”

Buster Posey was a standout performer for the San Francisco Giants for years, helping the organization to three World Series wins while earning six All-Star nods and an NL MVP Award in the process. His production took a dip in 2019, however, as he was working his way back from a hip injury.

Posey had his second career-worst outing at-bats last year, finishing the season with a .257 batting average. He also added seven home runs and only 38 RBIs in 114 games.

The 33-year-old decided not to play baseball in 2020 due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Look for him to make a major comeback this year.
