Bundesliga became the first major soccer competition to resume its activities for the 2019/20 season after a suspension due to coronavirus pandemic. The first games were played over the weekend, with eight games taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

Things were a bit different than before, of course, as Bundesliga had strict protocols in place in order to minimize the health risk. The matches were held without the audience, players were instructed not to celebrate goals with their teammates, while also having to social distance and wear masks when off the field.

The continuation of the season saw derby game between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke, with Borussia getting a 4-0 win thanks to Erling Haaland, Thorgan Hazard, and Raphael Guerreiro, who scored twice. Among other results, Borussia Monchengladbach defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3, Hertha trashed Hoffenheim 3-0 while Bayern kept the No.1 spot on the table with 0 – 2 victory over Union Berlin.

Bundesliga originally suspended all activities in early March before allowing the clubs to return to training in mid-April. The clubs were first instructed to organize workouts in smaller groups before transitioning to full training in early May.

The return of Bundesliga is carefully observed by the majority of other European leagues, like Premier League, Seria A, and La Liga, as they plan to resume its activities in June. On the other hand, several other competitions, like French Ligue 1 and Dutch Eredivisie, decided to cancel this season all-together.

German Bundesliga is set to become the first major soccer league to resume its season. While other soccer competitions like French Ligue 1 and Dutch Eredivisie decided to cancel the remainder of their seasons, Bundesliga is determined to resume playing this month.

According to ESPN, Bundesliga obtained a green light from the German government to resume its activities and will return as early as 15th May. Reportedly, the more realistic date is 22nd May.

Teams have nine matches left to play in 2019/20, and the league hopes to wrap up the season by the end of June. In order to minimize the health risks, the games will be held on empty stadiums while several other measures will be installed to keep the players safe, including one-week quarantine for all the players and frequent testing.

Bundesliga clubs have returned to training since early April in limited participation, with players working out in small groups. Now, as Germany is slowly lifting up restrictions imposed due to coronavirus pandemic, the players are expected to return to full training soon in order to get into competitive form.

Currently, Bayern Munich is on the top of the Bundesliga table with four points more than second-placed Borussia Dortmund. On the bottom of the table, Paderborn and Werder Bremen face a tough task of staying in the league while 16th placed Fortuna Düsseldorf still has a fighting chance to get to the place that saves them from relegation.

Several other high-profile leagues like English Premier League, Seria A, and La Liga are also hoping to resume its activities soon. Reportedly, they are preparing for June restart and will closely watch how Bundesliga handles the situation.
