The Buffalo Sabres acquired Eric Robinson in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft. This provides a fresh start to Robinson, who had struggled to secure a regular role in the Blue Jackets’ lineup during the current season.

Since arriving in Columbus as an undrafted player in 2017, Robsinson scored 38 goals and 82 points in 266 career appearances. Scoring a career-high 12 goals last season, the left wing managed to net only one goal in seven games this season. Meanwhile, the Sabres received an experienced left wing, assigning forward Brandon Biro to AHL Rochester to free up room in the roster.

Buffalo is in need of reinforcements to bolster its roster, particularly after losing four straight games. With Zemgus Girgensons expected to miss another week due to a lower-body injury, Robinson is expected to provide much experience in checking-line and penalty-killing roles.

The Buffalo Sabres star forward Tage Thompson is set to be sidelined indefinitely after injuring his left wrist during Tuesday night’s 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins. Thompson’s left wrist was impacted when he blocked a shot from Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy 11 minutes into the second period. He then headed to the bench in pain and sat out the remainder of the game.

“Tage is going to miss some time here, probably significant time, unfortunately,” Sabres coach Don Granato revealed. “He fought through the first injury but couldn’t fight through the second one. Credit to him to battle but it’s unfortunate.” The first injury Granato referred to was a cut Thomspon received from McAvoy’s skate during a collision.

After 16 games this season, Thompson is third in the Sabres’ roster with six goals and six assists. Last year, he was the Sabres’ leading scorer with 47 goals and 47 assists in 78 games.

The Buffalo Sabres defenseman Owen Power has agreed to a seven-year, $8.35 million contract extension. This contract will only become active at the start of the 2024-25 season.

Power’s contractual agreement comes just two days after the Sabres signed fellow defenseman Rasmus Dahlin to an eight-year extension worth $11 million per year. This comes as the team looks to grab their first Stanley Cup playoff spot since the 2010-11 season.

Scoring four goals and 35 points in 79 games last season, Power is expected to provide a significant boost to the Sabres’ defensive lines alongside Dahlin. They will be hoping to improve on their strong performance last season. While unable to make the playoffs, the team was able to grab 40 wins and 90 points in the same campaign for the first time since 2010-11.

Jack Eichel’s time with the Buffalo Sabres is officially over. The Sabres announced on Thursday that they have traded the star center to the Vegas Golden Knights.

According to the announcement, Buffalo received forwards Peyton Krebs and Alex Tuch alongside draft compensation in return. They get a top-10 protected 2022 first-rounder and a 2023 second-round selection while sending a 2023 third-rounder to Vegas as part of the deal. If Vegas’ first-round pick next year falls in the top 10, the Sabres will receive an unprotected first-rounder in 2023.

Eichel isn’t expected to play for the Golden Knights anytime soon, considering he needs to have surgery in order to repair a herniated disk in his neck. He is expected to have a disk replacement procedure in the following days and is looking at three months recovery period before he can be cleared for contact.

This surgery was the main reason why the relationship between the Sabres and Jack Eichel deteriorated to the point that they needed to part ways. The organization wanted Eichel to get fusion surgery, which is the common procedure in herniated disk injuries. The player, on the other hand, wanted disk replacement, although this was never performed on an NHL player before. After two sides couldn’t agree on the next step, Eichel asked to be traded.

Eichel played 375 games for the Sabres since making his NHL debut during the 2015/16 season. He scored 139 goals and dished 216 assists for a total of 355 points, and has three All-Star nods.

Krebs, the Golden Knights first round pick in 2019, played 13 career games in NHL and has one assist to his name. Tuch, who spent four seasons with Vegas, played 249 games with the franchise and contributed with 139 points.

After failing to get traded to a team that will allow him to get the herniated disk surgery he prefers, the All-Star center Jack Eichel is trying a different approach with the Buffalo Sabres. According to multiple reports, Eichel and his representatives are set to have a meeting with the team’s brass and make a final push for the procedure they think is best.

Eichel and the Sabres have been engaged in a standoff for the better part of the season. The 24-year-old is dealing with a herniated disk in his neck, and Buffalo wanted him to do a fusion surgery that is common for NHL players with this type of injury. The player, on the other hand, wants to have a disk replacement procedure that has never been done on an NHL player before.

Since the collective bargaining agreement gives teams the right to make the final say on medical things, the Sabres were pushing for the method recommended by their doctors. Eichel, not wanting to do a fusion surgery, asked for a trade in hopes he’ll land with a team that will allow him the replacement procedure.

Reportedly, several teams were interested in acquiring Eichel in recent months, but the Sabres continued to aim for a king’s ransom for him. But with his medical status unclear, teams didn’t want to risk giving up major assets to get him, and the interest in Eichel cooled off as of late.

Jack Eichel has been the Sabres’ best player in recent years, making three consecutive All-Star appearances between 2018 and 2020. He has 355 points (139 goals, 216 assists) since debuting in NHL in 2015-16.

All-Star center Jack Eichel is one step closer to leaving the Buffalo Sabres after the team decided he will no longer serve as the captain. The news was made public on Thursday by Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams.

Eichel is currently engaged in a standoff with the Sabres after requesting to be traded earlier this year. The main reason for his trade request was a disagreement with the organization about how he should be treating a herniated disk in his neck that kept him from playing since March.

The Sabres and their medical team wanted Eichel to undergo fusion surgery, which calls for removing the herniated disc in the neck. The player, on the other hand, wants to undergo an artificial disc replacement after seeking an alternative medical opinion. As Sportsnet points out, the latter was never performed on an NHL player before.

With the two sides unable to reach an agreement, the Sabres decided to place Eichel on Injured Reserve after he failed his physical ahead of training camp and strip him of his captaincy in the process. The 24-year-old star was named captain ahead of the 2018-19 NHL season.

“Jack Eichel is no longer the captain of the Buffalo Sabres,” Adams told the reporters. “From our perspective, the captain is your heartbeat of your team, and we are in a situation where we felt we needed to make that decision.”

Adams also added that he has been engaged in trade talks about Eichel with several teams throughout the summer but didn’t receive an offer that would satisfy the team. The discussions are ongoing, but there is no timetable for the trade.

Jack Eichel has been one of the best and most consistent young players in NHL since making his debut in the 2015-16 season. In 375 games with the Sabres, he scored 139 goals and 216 assists for a total of 355 points. He made three consecutive All-Star games between 2018 and 2020.

Buffalo Sabres fired their head coach Ralph Krueger on Wednesday, confirming the news on social media. The move comes after the team’s 2-3 loss against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night, which extended their losing streak to 12 games.

Krueger, who got the job ahead of the 2019-20 season, leaves Sabres in the last place in the East Division with the league’s worst record (6-18-4). This puts the team on course to miss the playoffs for the 10th straight season, which would match the NHL’s longest postseason drought.

The organization is yet to announce who will take over from Krueger. General manager Kevyn Adams reportedly thought about taking the job himself but gave up on the idea due to the upcoming NHL trade deadline.

Ralph Krueger is the third NHL head coach to get fired in the 2020-21 NHL season. Previously, the Montreal Canadiens replaced Claude Julien with Dominique Ducharme, while the Calgary Flames moved on from Geoff Ward.

Krueger spent his playing and early coaching career in Europe. He had his first head-coaching stint with the Edmonton Oilers in the 2012-13 season, holding the job for just one season and being fired after the team won only 19 games.

Besides hockey, Krueger also had a career as a soccer executive. He served as the director and chairman of Premier League side Southampton between 2014 and 2019.

Buffalo Sabres managed to avoid arbitration with center Sam Reinhart and goalie Linus Ullmark at the last moment. The team announced on Sunday that both Reinhart and Ullmark inked one-year deals that will keep them with the organization through the 2020/21 NHL season.

Reinhart got a new deal worth $5.2 million after putting up 50 points (22 goals and 28 assists) in 69 games he played during shortened 2019/20. He was set to have his arbitration hearing on Monday.

Ullmark, who will get $2.6 million next season, was set to appear in front of a panel of arbitrators on Tuesday. He was a rotation piece in the Sabres’ lineup last season, playing 34 games in which he posted a 17-14-3 record.  The 27-year-old finished the campaign with a 2.69 goals-against average (GAA), and .915 save percentage.

This represents a big coup for Sabres, especially since the duo is expected to play a significant role for the team next season.

Sam Reinhart was the franchise’s second overall pick in 2014 and is currently ranked second in points for Sabres since 2015. The Canadian has 109 goals and 146 assists for a total of 255 points in 400 NHL games he played so far.

Linus Ullmark is projected to make a two-piece goalkeeping choice on Buffalo’s goal with Carter Hutton. Ullmark has been with Sabres since 2016 and has 97 games for the franchise.

In a surprising turn of events, All-Star winger and 2018’s Hart Memorial Trophy winner Taylor Hall signed a deal with the rebuilding Buffalo Sabres.

Hall was one of the most attractive free agents this offseason and was pursued by Stanley Cup contenders like Boston Bruins, Nashville Predators, and his former team Edmonton Oilers. Arizona Coyotes, with whom he finished the 2019/20, were also a strong candidate for his signature.

However, the 28-year-old winger ended up taking the unexpected route and agreed with Sabres to a one-year, $8 million deal. He will reportedly receive $1 million in signing bonus and $7 million in salary.

Getting Hall is a big coup for the Sabres, especially since the franchise is currently going through a nine-year playoff drought, which is the longest-active in NHL.

“I certainly hope that the players and coaches and our staff and the organization are excited, and our fans are excited,” said general manager Kevyn Adams after the deal was made public. “This is a great step. But we’re in a position right now where we have to go earn it. We have to go get better every day.”

Although it isn’t an obvious fit, there are several reasons why Taylor Hall ended up choosing Buffalo Sabres. For starters, he will reunite with head coach Ralph Krueger, with whom he worked in Edmonton. Reportedly, the pair has a great relationship and they were eager to collaborate again.

Also, the Sabres give Hall a perfect chance to bounce back after a troubling past couple of seasons. The expectations won’t be as huge as in some other places, and he will be able to rebuild his value in order to command a bigger, long-term deal next year.

Hall played 627 career NHL games with the Oilers, New Jersey Devils, and Coyotes. He has 218 goals and 345 assists for a total of 564 points.

Despite their decision to give up the rights on Dominik Kahun, clearing the way for him to enter unrestricted free agency, Buffalo Sabres still remains hopeful of re-signing the 25-year-old promising forward.

In a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Sabres’ general manager Kevyn Adams explained that not giving a qualifying offer to Kahun was part of a “calculated approach” in the team’s offseason activity. However, the two sides are still talking, and Adams remains optimistic about reaching a deal with the players’ representatives.

“We continue to have a dialogue with his agent and made it clear that we’d like to continue those conversations,” said Adams. “I think he understands that we believe in him as a player, and it was just a position where we weren’t able to get to a spot where we both felt comfortable.”

Sabres opted against retaining Kahun’s rights since that would make him eligible for arbitration.

The player’s camp doesn’t seem bothered by this move, although they rejected Buffalo’s most recent contract offer labeling it as “not being good enough.”

“We still want to talk,” Kahun’s agent Jiri Hamal recently told The Associated Press. “Buffalo was a great option for him, and we believe we might find a solution.”

Dominik Kahun landed in Buffalo just ahead of the trade deadline, joining from Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade that saw Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues head in the opposite direction. Kahun managed to play only six games for the Sabres due to the shortened 2019/20 NHL season, but still managed to contribute with two goals and two assists.

Kahun previously also suited up for Chicago Blackhawks and has a total of 68 points (25 goals and 43 assists) in 138 NHL games.
