The Miami Dolphins shored up their injury-riddled defense on Tuesday by adding a pair of veteran linebackers. The team dipped into the free-agent market by signing Justin Houston and Bruce Irvin.

The Dolphins had their linebacker core decimated by injuries in the final stretch of the 2023 regular season, with Pro Bowler Bradley Chubb, standout third-year player Jaelan Phillips, and veteran Andrew Van Ginkel all being ruled out for the remainder of the season.

In addition to Houston and Irvin, the Dolphins also added linebacker Malik Reed to their practice squad.

Houston is a four-time Pro Bowler who spent the majority of his pro career with the Kansas City Chiefs while also suiting up for the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens, among other teams. He has 112.0 sacks, 185 QB hits, 515 tackles, 35 pass deflections, 19 forced fumbles, and five interceptions throughout his career.

Houston spent the early part of 2023 with the Carolina Panthers, starting in seven games but failing to make a significant impact. He requested to be released in December so he could have a shot at playing with a contender.

Irvin has been a journeyman throughout most of his career, playing for a new team each season since 2018. He has 56.5 career sacks to go with 344 tackles, 131 QB hits, 13 pass deflections, and 16 forced fumbles. The 36-year-old player spent some time with the Detroit Lions practice squad this season and played 42 snaps across two regular-season games.

The Miami Dolphins are playing the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Wild Card Round on Saturday. The Dolphins are looking for their first playoff win since 2000.

Veteran outside linebacker Bruce Irvin signed a one-year deal with Seattle Seahawks this offseason, returning to the place where his NFL career started. In a chat with reporters on Tuesday, Irvin revealed that his decision was influenced by the positive experience he had during his first stint.

Irvin explained that he was sitting at home, watching the Seahawks get a 9-17 win over Philadelphia Eagles, and ended up wishing he was there with his old organization.

“After the Philly game, actually, I sent Bobby (Wagner) a text while they were on the plane saying, ‘I wish I was on that plane with you all. I just wanted to come back,” said Irvin.

It turned out that Irvin didn’t have to wait too long to fulfill his wish. He was a free agent at the end of 2019 season, in which he had career-high 8.5 sacks with Carolina Panther, and Seahawks needed a pass rush help after their leading pass rusher in 2019 only had 4.0 sacks. The two sides swiftly agreed to a deal, and now the 32-year-old gets to make another run in Seattle.

Irvin isn’t just looking to singlehandedly up the Seahawks’ sack numbers and hopes to set an example for the franchise’s young players.

“We got a young group and we got to work,” he added. “I couldn’t predict how many sacks we’re going to get right now, but I think we’ve got a young, talented group and I’m going to work to lead these boys. … I just hope they’re ready to work.”

Bruce Irvin entered the league as Seahawks’ first round in 2012. He spent four years with the franchise, helping the team win a Super Bowl, before embarking on stints with Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers.

Irvin’s career stats include 301 tackles, 52.0 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, three interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.

It only took four days for outside linebacker Bruce Irvin to find a new job after being released by Oakland Raiders on November 3rd. Irvin agreed to a one-year deal with Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, which will see him playing in football in his hometown.

According to Irvin, he had more lucrative offers from New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, but the 31-year-old didn’t want to pass on the opportunity to play in Atlanta.

This was a dream [come] true,” – Irvin told ESPN. “The Patriots and Steelers offered more money, but being able to play for my city and my people — you just can’t put a price on that.

The Falcons confirmed the deal via their social media.

We know exactly how Bruce will fit into our team on the field, and just as importantly into our locker room,” -said Falcons head coach Dan Quinn.

Bruce Irvin and Dan Quinn already collaborated in 2013 and 2014 when Irvin played for Seattle Seahawks, and Quinn served as team’s defensive coordinator.

Bruce Irvin was selected by Seahawks in the first round of 2012 NFL Draft, spending four years with the organization and winning Super Bowl XLVIII. He signed to a four year deal with the Raiders in 2016.

Irvin played a total of 98 NFL games in his career and has 252 tackles, 40.0 sacks, and 15 forced fumbles.
