The Vegas Golden Knights have wrapped up their search for a new head coach. According to multiple reports, Bruce Cassidy is the man selected for the job.

Cassidy only recently became available after parting ways with Boston Bruins. He is set to succeed Peter DeBoer, who was fired by Vegas after the team missed out on the 2021-22 Stanley Cup playoffs.

ESPN’s Kevin Weekes was the first to break the news about Vegas’ hiring of Cassidy.

Bruce Cassidy spent the previous six seasons with the Bruins and has led the franchise to a postseason appearance in each year. His biggest success came in 2018–19 when Boston reached the Stanley Cup Finals before losing to St. Louis Blues in seven games.

The Bruins finished the 2021-22 regular-season campaign with 51 wins, which was the most during Cassidy’s tenure. However, their playoff run ended in the first round, where they lost 4-3 to Carolina Hurricanes.

Despite his success with the Bruins, Cassidy was fired in early June. The exact reasons for the surprising decision remain unknown, although general manager Don Sweeney said he felt the team needed a “new voice.” However, Cassidy’s voice seems to be good enough for Golden Knights, who are hoping to back on track after a disappointing campaign and become Stanley Cup contenders once again.

Boston Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy has won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL coach of the year.

The voting for the award is done by hockey broadcasters. Philadelphia Flyers coach Alain Vigneault received the second most votes while Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella came in third.

Cassidy led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Finals last year, where they lost to the St. Louis Blues after taking them to Game 7. The Bruins took the Presidents’ Trophy this year, which is awarded to the team that finished the regular season with the most points.

The Bruins seemed to be set for another good performance in the playoffs this year once the season restarted after it halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, their star goaltender Tuukka Rask opted out of the playoffs because of an undisclosed family issue, leaving them with two fairly inexperienced goalies, Jaroslav Halak and rookie Dan Vladar.

The Bruins’ season ended with a loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round.

Boston is Cassidy’s second coaching job. He was fired from the Washington Capitals in the 2003-2004 season after only 25 games. He then went back to coach junior hockey and wait for his next chance in the NHL.

Since Cassidy replaced Claude Julien during the 2016-17 season, the Bruins have made the playoffs every year.

Boston Bruins appreciated head coach Bruce Cassidy’s contribution to the team’s Stanley Cup Finals run last season, so they decided to reward the 54-year-old with a new deal. The team confirmed on Wednesday that they gave Cassidy a multi-year extension, but didn’t disclose further details.

“Peace of mind not only for Butch but for ourselves and probably the players a little bit too,” – said general manager Don Sweeney about the deal. “He’s earned the right to lead this club.”

Cassidy took over as the Bruins’ head coach in early 2017, replacing Claude Julien. Since then, he led the team to a 117-52-22 record and a playoff appearance in each of his three seasons with the team.

Under Cassidy, Bruins reached Stanley Cup Finals before losing the trophy to St. Louis Blues in seven games.

“I think it’s a good marriage,” – said Cassidy after inking the deal. “I think it’s worked well for both sides. So, for me, it’s where I wanted to be.
