Legendary United States men’s national team coach Bruce Arena is ready for a new challenge in his career. Arena was confirmed as New England Revolution’s new manager on Tuesday while also assuming the role of the team’s sporting director.

Arena, who resigned as USMNT’s coach after FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifications failure, will success head coach Brad Friedel and general manager Mike Burns. Revolution decided to fire the duo after the team won only two out of their first 12 games in 2019 MLS season.

“Bruce is one of the most successful coaches in American soccer history, and we feel his commitment to excellence, track record of winning championships in Major League Soccer, as well as his success at the international level, makes him the best person to bring the Revolution back to MLS Cup contention,” – said Revolution investor/operator Robert Kraft in a statement. “We have known Bruce dating back to the advent of MLS, and we have full confidence that he will raise the level of our club to the standard we all expect and demand.”

Bruce Arena already has a vast experience in MLS, where he previously coached D.C. United, New York Red Bulls and LA Galaxy. With these three teams Arena took five MLS Cups while also winning six trophies.

During his two stints with USMNT, Arena won three Gold Cups and led the team to two World Cups.

“In my conversations with the Kraft family and [Revs president] Brian Bilello, it’s clear that they have high expectations for the club and I believe there is a tremendous opportunity for me to create a winning culture throughout the Revolution organization,” – said Arena following his . “Boston is a great sports town with a history of championship teams, and I am looking forward to working with the staff and players to make the Revolution a club that our supporters can be proud of and that can be part of the tradition of success in New England.”

As U.S. Soccer Federation continues their search for Bruce Arena’s successor, former France and Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc revealed on Monday that he turned down the opportunity to take over the United States men’s national soccer team.

I was approached to coach internationally but it was a no. Especially when it is not your own country,” – Blanc told to Le Parisien. “International coaching must touch your national [roots]. Because of this, I turned it down.” The magazine said that the international job offers in question were from Australia and the United States.

Blanc also added that he is more interested in taking over a club. He hasn’t coached since 2016 when PSG sacked him after he failed to lead the team past the Champions League quarterfinals.

Previously, Blanc’s agent Jean-Pierre Berne revealed that both of these nations were looking for his client’s services.

He’s looking forward to starting again, but he doesn’t want to coach for coaching’s sake. He wants to try to get a big project, at a big club. If the project doesn’t arrive, we’ll see. We get offers all the time, from clubs from national teams…,” – said Berne before adding: “The USA, Australia for the World Cup…

The U.S. Soccer federation, however, said that they didn’t have any formal talks with the candidates. “We have not had formal discussions with any potential candidates at this point in our coaching search,” – said the Federation’s statement.

It is believed that the USMNT won’t get a coach until February 2018 when the presidential elections in the Federation will take place.

Dave Sarachan, who led the team in the friendly against Portugal is expected to make a return in the January’s friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The U.S. Soccer Federation has announced on Wednesday that Bruce Arena’s assistant, Dave Sarachan, was named interim coach of the United States men’s national team. Sarachan, who has a contract until the end of the year as the rest of the Bruce Arena’s staff, will lead the team in the match against Portugal in November. Alongside Sarachan, Pat Noonan, Matt Reis, and Kenny Arena are also on the U.S. Soccer Federation’s payroll. It is expected that they will not get new contracts as the federation looks for a new figure to coach USMNT. That process, however, may take a while.

As this is the start of a five-year project to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and grow the national team, we want to give ourselves the best opportunity to find the right coach to lead the program,” – the USSF said in a written statement. “As such, there is no specific timetable. We are developing a strategic approach to selecting the next head coach, and we will be thorough and methodical.

Dave Sarachan is a longtime collaborator of Bruce Arena who hired him as his assistant in 1984 at the University of Virginia. The pair then worked together in D.C. United, the U.S. squad from 1999 to 2002, and the Los Angeles Galaxy before returning to the U.S. team once again this year. As a head coach, Sarachan managed Cornell University and Chicago Fire.

As the USSF begins its search, a couple of high-profile names popped up as the early favorites. One of them is current Atlanta FC coach, Gerardo Martino who also managed Argentina and Barcelona in the past. Former PSG coach Laurent Blanc is also a favorite and might be more realistic option since he is currently unemployed.

The first big challenge for the new USMNT coach will be the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

According to ESPN’s sources, U.S. national team will get interim coach sometime this weekend, after Bruce Arena decided he will not continue leading the USMNT. U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati spoke to the reporters last week and told them that the decision will be made in seven to 10 days, ahead of the friendly match USMNT will have against Portugal on Nov. 14. If we are to believe the sources, Gulati will stick to his word.

The clear favorite for the interim coach job is U.S. youth technical director and under-20 manager, Tab Ramos. However, it appears that Ramos isn’t so keen on the job. The Sports Illustrated reports that Ramos would take the job of coaching the USMNT but only on the full-time basis, rather than being the interim coach. Gulati, on the other hand, is insisting on the interim label, as the U.S. Soccer Federation looks to take its time in choosing the coach who will lead the campaign for the 2022 World Cup.

If Ramos ends up declining the job, Gulati will search for another candidate among the coaches who are already on the U.S. Soccer payroll. Some of the Bruce Arena’s staff could be in the mix including Dave Sarachan, Pat Noonan, Matt Reis and Kenny Arena. Dave Sarachan would be an obvious choice, since he is the only one with the high-level managerial experience, coaching the Chicago Fire in the past.

Another name that is being speculated as an option is U-17 manager John Hackworth, but the move is unlikely due to the fact that Hackworth is currently leading the U-17 team in the FIFA U-17 World Cup which takes place in India.

USMNT failed to qualify for the World Cup first time since 1986, having lost the key game against Trinidad and Tobago. Now, moving forward, U.S. Soccer Federation will have to be very careful about choosing their approach and get a coach that will make a real difference.

The first half of Honduras vs. USA game saw Romell Quioto scoring a goal and giving Honduras a lead. This meant U.S. men’s national team was facing a mountain to climb. There were on the losing end of a game they needed a positive result from. The shocking loss against Costa Rica on September 2nd ensured that the USA will have to work hard to get to the World Cup held in Russia in 2018. Defeat against Honduras would bring the world of problems, and would put in jeopardy the whole mission.

Luckily, Hamburger SV’s forward Bobby Wood came off the bench and found the net towards the end of the game, giving the USA a valuable point. It was a game that looked already lost for the USMNT. The team played poorly in the first half, and the things didn’t look much better in the second. But Wood’s goal ensured the USA staying ahead of Honduras in the standings, and that is the most important thing at the moment.

That’s a huge point for the U.S. team. The conditions were challenging for both teams. I’m really proud of our team.” – said Bruce Arena in the post-match press conference.

The USA has two more games left in the qualifiers. The first one will see the USA welcoming Panama on the home turf, a match the USMNT has to win. Panama is currently ahead of USA in the standings, and they hold the 3rd spot which leads directly to the 2018 World Cup. Besides the match against the USA, Panama will face Costa Rica as well. The second match will see the USA going to Trinidad and Tobago, a team that has lost 7 out of 8 of their matches. If Bruce Arena’s boys manage to get two wins, USA will secure the World Cup spot. Everything else will definitely be considered a failure.
