The New England Patriots decided to make some changes in their QB room ahead of the 2023 season. According to multiple reports, the Pats have told veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer that he will be released before free agency starts on March 15th.

Hoyer started one game with New England in 2022, completing five out of six passes attempted and throwing for 37 yards before having to exit due to a concussion. He entered the offseason having one year remaining on his contract that carried $1.4 million in guarantees.

After the Pats release Hoyer, they will have third-year signal-caller Mac Jones and last year’s fourth-round selection Bailey Zappe as their quarterbacks. It is highly unlikely that head coach Bill Belichick will enter the season with only two QBs on the roster, so expect at least one veteran to join before training camp.

The move marks the end of Brian Hoyer’s third stint with the New England Patriots. He spent eight years in total with the franchise and made 30 appearances, including two starts. Hoyer’s stats as a Patriot include 729 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Hoyer, who also played with the Cleveland Browns and the Houston Texans, among other franchises, should attract some interest in free agency. The teams will look at him as a reliable veteran backup option and a mentor for their younger players.

The New England Patriots’ QB room became a bit more crowded on Tuesday. The organization decided to re-sign veteran Brian Hoyer to a one-year deal, adding a fourth quarterback to their roster ahead of the training camp. Hoyer’s agency JL Sports announced the news on social media, with the Pats later confirming the move as well.

Hoyer opened the 2020 NFL season as Cam Newton’s backup but was dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart behind Jarrett Stidham as the campaign progressed. The 35-year-old player got one start last season, throwing for 130 yards and having one interception against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.

Hoyer was reportedly an option for several teams earlier in the offseason and visited the New York Jets in early April. The two sides couldn’t come to an agreement, which opened the way for his return to New England.

This will be Brian Hoyer’s seventh season with the Patriots, who signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2009. He spent three years in his first stint with the organization before returning in 2017. Hoyer then left again in 2019 to play with the Indianapolis Colts, only to return a year later.

Throughout his NFL career, Hoyer also played with the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Chicago Bears, among other teams. He has 10,404 career passing yards with 52 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

It remains to be seen what role the Pats have in store for Hoyer. Besides having Newton and Stidham as their QB options, the organization also took Alabama’s Mac Jones in this year’s draft.

New England Patriots have signed a quarterback in the aftermath of Tom Brady’s departure, but it’s not the name that will make Pats’ fans excited about the future. According to The Boston Globe, Pats brought in veteran Brian Hoyer on a one-year deal, worth $1.05 million.

Hoyer became a free agent just recently, with Indianapolis Colts deciding to release him after signing Phillip Rivers. By signing with the Pats, the 34-year-old returns to familiar surroundings, as he spent the first three years of his career with the franchise.

Hoyer spent the 2019 NFL season backing up Jacoby Brissett in Indianapolis, but did manage to get one start. In the game against Miami Dolphins, which Colts lost 16-12, Hoyer threw for 204 yards and one touchdown, but also had three interceptions.

With Bryan Hoyer nearing towards the end of his career, the chances are that New England didn’t bring him in to be a starter. Instead, Hoyer will most likely compete with second-year player Jarrett Stidham and former third-round pick Cody Kessler for a backup role.

Patriots are expected to sign a proven veteran to start at the position, with the likes of Cam Newton and Andy Dalton being the most likely candidates. Both Newton and Dalton were given permission to seek a trade and would most likely be available for a knockdown price.
