Brett Brown, former head coach for the Philadelphia 76ers, will return to the organization where his NBA coaching career started. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Brown is rejoining the San Antonio Spurs and will once again serve as an assistant on Gregg Popovich’s staff.

Brown has been out of the NBA since the end of the 2019-20 season when the 76ers fired him following a first-round playoff exit. He spent seven years on the job, overseeing Philly’s transformation from a painful “The Process” rebuild to an Eastern Conference contender. Brown posted a 221-334 head coaching record in Philadelphia and made two Conference Semifinals trips with the organization.

After taking a break from the league in 2021-22, Brown will now have a fresh start with the Spurs. He will most likely fill the void left by the departure of long-term assistant Becky Hammon.

Brett Brown had his coaching start in New Zealand and Australia before joining the Spurs in the late ’90s as an intern. He left San Antonio after one year to coach the Sydney Kings before returning to the organization in 2002. Brown served in various roles with the franchise until 2013, including director of player development and assistant coach.

Brett Brown exits a head coaching job for the second time in less than two months. But this time, unlike his departure from Philadelphia 76ers, Brown decided to step down on his own.

Brown announced on Tuesday that he is resigning as the head coach of Australia men’s national basketball team, and won’t lead the Boomers at the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

The news was also confirmed by Basketball Australia, the country’s highest basketball governing body.

According to Brown, he made the decision due to personal reasons. “Whilst I have a deep and long-standing passion for Australian Basketball, I am currently unable to commit to coaching the Boomers at next year’s Olympic Games,” said Brown in a statement.  “The uncertainties around the direction of my professional future, unfortunately, mean that I cannot commit to the time and preparation that this job deserves and requires.”

Brett Brown has a long history with Australia, having served as an assistant on the team’s coaching staff from 1995 to 2003. Brown returned as a head coach in 2009, serving at the post until 2012 and leading the country to quarter-finals at Summer Olympics in London.

Australia turned to Brown once again last year following Andrej Lemanis’ surprise resignation.

Back in August, Brown also ended his seven-year coaching stint with the 76ers. He was fired following a first-round playoff exit.

Philadelphia 76ers’ All-Star guard Ben Simmons is known for being a reluctant long-range shooter and it appears this almost cost him his starting job. According to the latest piece penned by ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan, 76ers’ head coach Brett Brown considered benching Simmons if he continued to refuse shooting three-pointers.

Brown told MacMullan that he had a conversation with Simmons and his parents last summer about the topic of three-point shooting and was close to taking drastic measures.

“I told Ben, ‘If you aren’t willing to shoot, then do I just bench you? Because I can do that,'” Brown explained. “We could have gone that route or continue to coach him as it relates to spacing. We worked on the ability to use it as a choice to shoot the 3, catch and go, get in the paint, or find someone else.”

Eventually, Brown decided to keep Simmons in the starting lineup, hoping that the 23-year-old will make the necessary adjustments by himself.

“I opted to take this path. I think only down the road will we be able to truly assess if it was the right one, ” he added. “In the meantime, he’s a two-time All-Star, a kid that’s gone from a college 4 to an NBA point guard. His story is a pretty darn good one.”

Since making his debut in 2017, Ben Simmons attempted a total of 23 three-pointers and made just two of them, both this season. Still, Simmons managed to thrive despite not having a long-range shot in his arsenal. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year award and followed that up with two consecutive All-Star appearances.

Australia’s national basketball team could be in the mix for a medal on the upcoming Olympics, thanks to their talented roster highlighted by 76ers’ All-Star Ben Simmons. Other NBA players on Australia’s roster include San Antonio Spurs’ Patty Mills, Utah Jazz’s Joe Ingles and Dante Exum, and Cleveland Cavaliers’ Matthew Dellavedova. The country took part in 14 Olympic games so far, but never managed to win a medal.

It looks like the losing ways are really behind the Philadelphia 76ers because the team has high ambitions for the upcoming 2018-19 NBA season. According to 76ers’ coach Brett Brown, they want to reach the NBA Finals this year.

We want to play in the NBA Finals,” – Brown told reporters following the team’s first training camp practice. “As I said to you, we feel we could have played in the NBA Finals [last season]. I understand the magnitude of that statement, but I stand by it. And I own it.”

While this might be considered a severe overreach for this team, as Brett Brown made a similar prediction ahead of 2017-18. With Philadelphia 76ers coming off a 28-win season, the 57-year-old Australian said his they are going to make the playoffs. Eight months later, the 76ers were the third seed in the Eastern Conference at the end of the regular season.

“It’s our goal to play in an NBA Finals. It’s a respect of championships habits. It’s a respect of each other. There are a lot of pieces that clearly have to be involved for us to achieve such a high goal.” – Brown elaborated this year’s prediction. “But that’s our goal.

Unlike last year, there is some faith in Philadelphia 76ers this time around. After LeBron James went to Western Conference, the East was left for grabs, and most analysts are picking Boston Celtics to take the throne. Toronto Raptors, with a healthy Kawhi Leonard, are considered close runner-ups while the 76ers are considered the third strongest team in the conference.
