All-Star closer Liam Hendriks is finally off the free-agent market. According to multiple reports, Hendriks inked a two-year deal with the Boston Red Sox.

Hendriks hasn’t garnered a lot of interest this winter despite his impressive resume. The reason for this is that he underwent a Tommy John surgery this past summer, which will sideline him at least until the final third of the 2024 MLB campaign. The more realistic timeline for his return is the 2025 season.

It appears that the Red Sox are willing to take a risk more than other teams, hoping that Hendriks will be his old self once he returns from the injury. If that ends up being the case, they will have one of the game’s best closers on a relatively cheap deal.

ESPN’s Buster Onley reports that Hendriks’ contract with Boston includes $10 million in guaranteed money and also comes with various performance-based bonuses.

Liam Hendriks made his MLB debut in 2011 with the Minnesota Twins before embarking on stints with the Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, and the Chicago White Sox. He has three All-Star nods and two All-MLB First Team selections to his name while also being named AL Reliever of the Year twice.

Over the course of his 13 years in the majors, Hendriks has a 33-34 record, 3.82 ERA, 727 strikeouts, and 116 saves.

The Boston Red Sox traded All-Star left-hander Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. In exchange, the Red Sox are getting talented infielder Vaughn Grissom.

The Red Sox paid tribute to Sale after the trade was made official, uploading a video of Sale’s World Series-winning strikeout of Manny Machado in 2018.

Sale was in the final year of the five-year, $145 million extension he signed with the Boston team in 2019. To facilitate the deal, the 34-year-old player waived his no-trade clause while the Red Sox are also covering $17 million of his $27.5 million salary for the 2024 MLB season.

Chris Sale joined the Red Sox in 2017 in a trade from the Chicago White Sox. He earned All-Star selection in his first two years with the franchise while also winning his first World Series ring. However, Sale failed to play on the same level in the following years, dealing with a drop in form, Tommy John surgery, and several injuries.

Sale made 20 starts for the Red Sox in 2023, finishing the campaign with a 6-5 record, 4.30 ERA, and 125 strikeouts.

Vaughn Grissom has two seasons of experience in MLB. He played 64 games for the Braves, batting .287 with five home runs and 27 RBIs.

The Boston Red Sox made the first significant piece of business in the free agency by shoring up their rotation with right-hander Lucas Giolito.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Giolito inked a two-year, $38.5 million deal with the Red Sox. The 29-year-old player will be able to earn an additional $2 million based on the number of innings he plays.

The agreement also comes with an opt-out after the 2024 MLB season and a conditional option for 2026.

Giolito played with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians in 2023. He made a total of 33 starts, which is a career-high, and finished the campaign with an 8-15 record, 4.88 ERA, and 204 strikeouts.

Giolito’s best season in the majors came in 2019 when he had a 14-9 record as a starter with a 3.41 ERA and a career-high 228 strikeouts. He had three complete games and shutouts that season, earning his first All-Star nod.

The Boston Red Sox looked to upgrade their rotation for the 2024 season and were one of the teams that pursued highly-coveted Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. After missing out on Yamamoto, the Red Sox decided to turn to cheaper options, inking righty Cooper Criswell to a one-year deal and now Giolito.

The Boston Red Sox are having quite a busy week on the trade market. After sending outfielder Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees and acquiring right-hand pitcher Justin Slaten from the New York Mets, the Red Sox have now also landed outfielder Tyler O’Neill in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.

According to the Red Sox’s announcement on Friday, they are sending RHP Nick Robertson and minor league pitcher Victor Santos to St. Louis in exchange for O’Neill.

O’Neill has two Golden Glove Awards on his resume and has been, at times, a valuable player for the Cardinals. In 2021, he batted .286 with 34 home runs and 80 RBIs while receiving NL Most Valuable Player votes. However, injuries limited his impact in the past couple of seasons while he also had public disagreements with Cardinals’ manager Oli Marmol.

The Red Sox are most likely hoping that O’Neill can re-discover his old form next season when he’ll be healthy and that they can get one good year out of him before he reaches free agency. The 28-year-old player has one year of arbitration left on his deal that will likely pay him around $5 million.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, shore up their pitching staff with Robertson and Santos. Robertson made his debut in MLB this past season, playing 18 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Red Sox, while Santos is recovering from Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss the 2023 campaign.

Sources confirmed on Wednesday that Craig Breslow is set to become the Boston Red Sox’s new head of baseball operations. It is believed that Breslow has already accepted the Red Sox’s offer to coach the team.

Currently the Chicago Cubs’  assistant general manager and vice president of pitching, Breslow previously played as a pitcher for the Red Sox over five seasons. He was a part of their title-winning team in 2013. Following his retirement, Breslow joined Chicago’s front office in 2019, starting out as the director of strategic initiatives for baseball operations.

The Red Sox have been on the lookout for a candidate to take over from Chaim Bloom, the previous chief baseball officer who had been fired in September following three last-place finishes in four seasons.

All-Star closer Kenley Jansen got accustomed to playing baseball in October, having been in the postseason in each of the past 10 years. However, his streak will end in 2023 after the Boston Red Sox were eliminated from playoff contention, and it is safe to say that Jansen isn’t happy about it.

Jansen made it clear how he feels about the Red Sox’s shortcomings during a recent appearance on the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast.

“Ten straight years in the playoffs,” Jansen said. “Frustrating. Disappointment. All come together. Not happy. To be quite honest for you, I don’t know how to play for numbers. I only know how to compete for a championship. That’s me just being honest.”

Jansen is particularly frustrated with the fact that the Red Sox had a passive approach to the trade deadline and believes the team’s inability to add help to the roster is what caused them to miss out on the postseason.

“We do have a great team, and if we would have a couple of starters we wouldn’t be talking about this right now,” Jansen said. “We would be playing in a Wild Card game right now … It’s definitely frustrating.”

The Red Sox currently sit at a 76-81 record and will most likely finish at the bottom of the AL East. Poor performances in the 2023 season already caused the franchise to make some big changes, firing chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom earlier in September.

Jansen spent the first 10 years of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning the World Series with the franchise in 2020. He spent the 2022 season with the Atlanta Braves before inking a two-year contract with the Red Sox ahead of this season.

The Boston Red Sox fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom on Thursday, bringing an end to his four-season tenure with the team. This comes after the team proved highly inconsistent throughout Bloom’s tenure and now looks unlikely to grab a playoff berth this year.

Bloom joined the Red Sox in 2019 after the dismissal of general manager Dave Dombrowski. This came a year after Boston won its fourth World Series in 15 years. The chief baseball officer was viewed as a fresh change of pace from Dombrowski – while Dombrowski was a big spender, Bloom achieved small-market success with Tampa Bay, building a strong team from within.

Many Red Sox officials were surprised by the decision to axe Bloom. While the team’s performances have been inconsistent in recent years, numerous members of the organization believe that the franchise is on the rise and destined for a promising future.

“The decision was not made lightly or easily,” team president and CEO Sam Kennedy stated during a press conference. “We all know where we are in the standings. It’s a painful reality that fans feel as deeply as we do. Our fans deserve a winning, competitive team that consistently plays postseason baseball.”

The Boston Red Sox snapped their eight-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 6-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. The win saw a big performance from their veteran shortstop Pablo Reyes, who hit a walk-off homer while also putting together a stat line that has never been seen in MLB history.

Reyes had his big moment in the ninth inning when he stepped on the plate with two outs and bases loaded. He connected on a pitch by Royals’ reliever Carlos Hernandez and sent the ball in the Fenway Park stands for his first career walk-off home run.

Besides his game-ending homer, Reyes also did a lot more throughout the game. He also had three hits, three runs, multiple extra-base hits, and a stolen base. According to Opta STATS, no other player in MLB history has ever managed to achieve all this in a single game.

Pablo Reyes couldn’t have elected a better moment to have a career night. His place on the Red Sox roster was shaky, considering that All-Star shortstop Trevor Story is making a return from the Injured List. But it is now hard to see Boston giving up on Reyes amid his improved play.

“He’s a good kid, and there’s a reason he’s here,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora after the Royals game. “We like his versatility; we like his at-bats against lefties. You saw it yesterday, controlling the zone against righties. He’s a good player; he is a really good player and a good kid. … It was a great game for Pablo; I’m very proud of him.”

Super-utilityman Enrique Hernandez will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a deal that will see two relievers, Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman, depart for the Boston Red Sox.

As part of the deal reached on Tuesday, the Red Sox have agreed to pay $2.5 million of the roughly $3.5 million remaining on Hernandez’s current contract.

“Obviously he helped us win a championship and had his best years here in a Dodger uniform,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Hernandez. “I know the fans are excited. He’s got a great relationship with the fans, does a lot of stuff in the community, and I think for us it’s more of — he hasn’t had the best of seasons, but the bet is being back home, the familiarity, kinda can tap back into being the player that we know he can be and that we’ve seen.”

Hernandez first played for the Dodgers from 2015 until 2020. He is fondly remembered by fans for his tying home run in Game 7 of the 2020 National League Championship Series, helping the Dodgers to win their first World Series title in over 30 years.

Rafael Devers has agreed to a one-year, $17.5 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, sources confirmed on Tuesday. The third baseman is reportedly looking to avoid arbitration, while both sides hope to negotiate a long-term deal.

While Devers is currently set to become a free agent in 2023, the Red Sox are looking to strike a long-term deal that will keep the 26-year-old in Boston until his 30s. The team is in need of squad reinforcements following the departures of homegrown talents Mookie Bett and Xander Bogaerts, who left via trade and free agency respectively.

Last season, Devers hit .295/.358/.521 for the Red Sox with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs. Over his six seasons in Boston, Devers has tallied 139 home runs and 455 RBIs, hitting .295/.358/.521 in the process.

The Red Sox have proven to be busy during the offseason, signing a growing list of players including infielder Justin Turner, outfielder Masataka Yoshida, starter Corey Kluber, and relievers Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, and Joely Rodriguez. Xander Bogaerts and Nathan Eovaldi went in the opposite direction, joining the San Diego Padres and the Texas Rangers respectively.
