Sources confirmed on Wednesday that Craig Breslow is set to become the Boston Red Sox’s new head of baseball operations. It is believed that Breslow has already accepted the Red Sox’s offer to coach the team.

Currently the Chicago Cubs’  assistant general manager and vice president of pitching, Breslow previously played as a pitcher for the Red Sox over five seasons. He was a part of their title-winning team in 2013. Following his retirement, Breslow joined Chicago’s front office in 2019, starting out as the director of strategic initiatives for baseball operations.

The Red Sox have been on the lookout for a candidate to take over from Chaim Bloom, the previous chief baseball officer who had been fired in September following three last-place finishes in four seasons.

The Boston Red Sox fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom on Thursday, bringing an end to his four-season tenure with the team. This comes after the team proved highly inconsistent throughout Bloom’s tenure and now looks unlikely to grab a playoff berth this year.

Bloom joined the Red Sox in 2019 after the dismissal of general manager Dave Dombrowski. This came a year after Boston won its fourth World Series in 15 years. The chief baseball officer was viewed as a fresh change of pace from Dombrowski – while Dombrowski was a big spender, Bloom achieved small-market success with Tampa Bay, building a strong team from within.

Many Red Sox officials were surprised by the decision to axe Bloom. While the team’s performances have been inconsistent in recent years, numerous members of the organization believe that the franchise is on the rise and destined for a promising future.

“The decision was not made lightly or easily,” team president and CEO Sam Kennedy stated during a press conference. “We all know where we are in the standings. It’s a painful reality that fans feel as deeply as we do. Our fans deserve a winning, competitive team that consistently plays postseason baseball.”

Rafael Devers has agreed to a one-year, $17.5 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, sources confirmed on Tuesday. The third baseman is reportedly looking to avoid arbitration, while both sides hope to negotiate a long-term deal.

While Devers is currently set to become a free agent in 2023, the Red Sox are looking to strike a long-term deal that will keep the 26-year-old in Boston until his 30s. The team is in need of squad reinforcements following the departures of homegrown talents Mookie Bett and Xander Bogaerts, who left via trade and free agency respectively.

Last season, Devers hit .295/.358/.521 for the Red Sox with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs. Over his six seasons in Boston, Devers has tallied 139 home runs and 455 RBIs, hitting .295/.358/.521 in the process.

The Red Sox have proven to be busy during the offseason, signing a growing list of players including infielder Justin Turner, outfielder Masataka Yoshida, starter Corey Kluber, and relievers Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, and Joely Rodriguez. Xander Bogaerts and Nathan Eovaldi went in the opposite direction, joining the San Diego Padres and the Texas Rangers respectively.

The Boston Red Sox haven’t made a big splash so far in the offseason, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t active. According to multiple reports, the Red Sox managed to pick up a reliable starter from the free-agent market by agreeing to a one-year deal with right-hander Michael Wacha.

Wacha comes to Boston after spending the 2021 MLB season with the Tampa Bay Rays. He went 3-5 in 23 games as a starter while posting a 5.05 ERA and finishing the year with 121 strikeouts.

The deal between the two sides should become official after Wacha passes his physical.

The financial terms of the agreement between Wacha and the Red Sox currently remain under wraps, but the 30-year-old is expected to receive a salary of around $5 million, if not more. He played the 2020 season on a one-year, $3 million contract.

Getting Michael Wacha should turn out to be a smart deal for the Red Sox, considering that it won’t impact their finances all that much. Wacha will give them a solid option at the back end of their rotation, while it shouldn’t be surprising to see him in a reliever role if Boston ends up lacking depth in that department.

Wacha is entering his 10th year in the majors. He spent most of his MLB career with the St. Louis Cardinals and has one All-Star nod to show for. His stats include 63-48 record, 4.14 ERA, and 917 strikeouts.

Alex Cora will remain the manager of the Boston Red Sox for at least three more years. This comes after the franchise decided to exercise the club option on Cora’s contract for the 2023 and 2024 MLB seasons. The news was confirmed on the Red Sox’s official social media on Monday.

The Red Sox decided to keep Cora around for the long term after a successful outing in the 2021 MLB season. Despite not being given much chance to compete, Boston managed to finish the regular season with a 92-70 record and then embark on an impressive playoffs run. They got all the way to AL Championship Series before being eliminated by the Houston Astros in six games.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to manage the Red Sox,” Cora said in a statement after the news became official. “We experienced so many special moments as a team and as a city in 2021, but we still have unfinished business to take care of.”

Alex Cora took over the managerial duties for the Red Sox ahead of the 2018 MLB season and immediately led the team to a World Series title. He also broke the franchise record for the most regular-season wins with 108 in the same year. Cora followed that up with another winning season (84-78) in 2019, but Boston failed to make the playoffs.

Cora left Boston ahead of the 2020 season after it became obvious that he will be suspended by MLB for his role in the Astros sign-stealing scandal. However, the Red Sox opted to hire Cora again just one year later following a last place in the AL East under his replacement Ron Roenicke.

Veteran shortstop Jose Iglesias is returning to the place where his MLB career started. The Boston Red Sox have just announced that they’ve signed Iglesias to a major league contract and added him to the active roster.

Red Sox made several other roster moves on the same day, reinstating lefty Josh Taylor from the COVID-19 list and elevating right-hand pitcher Michael Feliz to the active roster. The franchise also sent pitcher Kutter Crawford and infielders Jack Lopez and John Schreiber back to their Triple-A affiliate Worcester.

Iglesias started the season with Los Angeles Angels, where he batted .259 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs. He was released by the team late last week following the decision to start veteran infielder Jack Mayfield on SS.

Red Sox used the opportunity to return Iglesias to Fenway Park to add depth and experience to their thin infield. The franchise was forced to send 11 players to the COVID-19 list recently, including All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts and three other infielders.

Jose Iglesias made his MLB debut with the Red Sox back in 2011 and played three seasons in Boston. He was traded in 2013 to Detroit Tigers, where he had some of his best performances and earned an All-Star nod in 2015. Iglesias, who also suited up for the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles, has a .276 career batting average with 43 homers and 312 RBIs.
