Montreal Impact recently announced that it has declined the 2021 contract option for Spanish forward Bojan Krkic, seemingly ending his stint with the organization after just one season. However, it appears that the front office hasn’t entirely given up on the 30-year-old.

Speaking with reporters late last week, Impact’s sporting director Olivier Renard said that the club made a new offer to Bojan. According to Renard, the contract option was “too high” for the organization, but they were willing to extend his stay in Montreal under new terms.

“We know he’s a great player, but the option was too high for us, so that’s why the club took the decision not to make this option,” said Renard. “We have the interest to bring Bojan back and the decision will be on him.”

Bojan was solid for the Impact since joining the team in August 2019, scoring seven goals and four assists in 31 games. However, this kind of output wasn’t enough to justify his high earnings. Indeed, Bojan was reportedly Montreal’s highest-paid player in the past two seasons, baking in a yearly salary of $1.23 million.

Before joining Montreal, Bojan had suited up for three different clubs over two and a half years. It remains to be seen the former FC Barcelona wonderkid will accept a lower salary in return for a badly-needed continuity.

Although they recently brought in Finnish midfielder Lassi Lappalainen, Montreal Impact are keen to make more roster additions before the MLS secondary transfer window closes. As it turns out, one of those additions could easily be former Barcelona wonderkid Bojan Krkic.

According to influential Spanish outlet MARCA, Krkic is set to join Impact in the coming days and is keen to bring his talents to MLS. Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio adds that the 28-year-old forward met with club officials in Bologna and the two sides are “close to finalizing the deal.”

Krkic is currently a free agent after he negotiated to be released from his contract with Stoke City. He attracted interest from several clubs from Spain, including Real Mallorca and Granada, but he reportedly prefers a move to Montreal, which he sees as an opportunity to revive his career.

Bojan Krkic started his professional career with Barcelona and was considered one of the most talented Spanish soccer players of his generation early on. He was even dubbed as “new Messi” and was expected to become one of the team’s cornerstones.

Although he put in some solid performances in his first few seasons as a pro, Krkic failed to meet the high expectations. This resulted in Barca moving on from him and led to stints with Roma, Milan, and Ajax before he eventually landed with Stoke City.
