Former Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Blake Bortles has signed with the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams announced the deal on Monday, confirming Bortles’ inked a one-year deal and will back up starting quarterback Jared Goff.

Bortles was looking for a perfect place to revive his career after Jags released him last week following a disastrous 2018 season. The 26-year-old attracted the interest from Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos as well but ended up opting for LA and the chance to work with coach Sean McVay.

“You know, kind of weighing the options that I had prior to going and meeting with anybody — this was the first visit I took — the Rams were the one that stood out to me, kind of the place I wanted to be, and what I thought would be best, personally, for me joining a good football team,” – said Bortles for the Rams’ official website. “So kind of when I was around the building talking to people, it really just solidified that. And I got off the phone with my agent and was kind of like, ‘This is where I want to be and where I think is best for me.'”

Blake Bortles entered the NFL in 2014 when the Jaguars took him third overall. In his five seasons with the team, he managed to post a 24-49 record as a starter while leading the Jags to AFC Championship game in 2017. His career stats include 59.3 percent pass completion for 17,646 yards, 103 touchdowns, and 75 interceptions.

Jacksonville Jaguars are facing lots of questions after a disastrous 2018 NFL season. The biggest question of them all, however, is the future of the team’s quarterback position. Everything points out that Jags’ current QB Blake Bortles will be released and replaced, but it looks like the team still hasn’t made a definite decision.

Tom Coughlin, Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations, recently made an appearance on ESPN’s Action Sports Jax Live! and was asked to provide an update about Bortles’ future with the team.

“Blake Bortles is the quarterback with the Jacksonville Jaguars right now,” – Coughlin responded.

This response indicates that Jaguars are taking a cautious approach about the matter. The front office is probably waiting to see the QB situation on the free agent market, as well as to get more familiar with the prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. In case that they don’t find a suitable replacement, they could hold on to Blake Bortles for one more year, considering he still has two years left on the $54 million, three-year contract he signed last offseason.

Bortles’ contract is another issue the Jags have to think about, considering the fact that they would have to swallow $16.5 million in dead money if they release him. It also makes the 26-year-old nearly impossible to move via trade.

Bortles had an impressive 2017 season, in which he led Jaguars to AFC Championship Game, but couldn’t follow that up in 2018. He only threw for 2,718 yards and 13 touchdowns last season while having 11 interceptions.

After losing seven straight games and getting eliminated from the playoff race, Jacksonville Jaguars started making some big changes. The team first fired offensive coordinator Nathanial Hackett on Monday, and then decided to bench their starting quarterback Blake Bortles in favor of Cody Kessler.

Speaking with reporters for the first time since Jags’ head coach Doug Marrone took away his starting QB job, Bortles said that he put himself in that position.

I put myself in this position,”- said Bortles. “I didn’t play good enough. I didn’t win football games. I couldn’t find a way to get it done.

By being benched for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, Blake Bortles will see his streak of starting 72 consecutive games get snapped.

When that happens, it’s a business and everybody understands that. I don’t think there’s anything personal involved. As a quarterback, I think you have one job and that’s to win a football game. And if you don’t do that, your time is probably limited.” – he added.

Always being an inconsistent quarterback, Blake Bortles particularly struggled in 2018. He managed to complete just 60 percent of his passes (223 of 36), throwing for 2,572 yards and 13 touchdowns. Bortles also threw 10 interceptions while failing to get over 200 yards passing on six occasions.

The future of Blake Bortles in Jacksonville remains unknown, although there are many indications that the team is thinking about moving on from him. Bortles still has two years left on his three-year, $54 million extension he signed in February 2018, and the Jags would have to take a massive salary cap hit if they decide to release him. It remains to be seen whether they think that wouldn’t be a big price if they could land a better quarterback.
