The Chicago Blackhawks signed Nick Foligno to a two-year, $9 million contract extension. This comes as the left wing was set to become an unrestricted free agent during the summer. He joined Chicago on a one-year, $4 million deal during the 2023 offseason after departing the Boston Bruins.

“The impact Nick has already had on our team in such a short time is a testament to his work ethic and dedication to helping the players around him succeed,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson commented. “Hardworking on the ice, the energy he brings every night and his versatility to play in any situation have been tremendous assets.”

Foligno has scored 542 points (223 goals, 319 assists) in 1,120 career games, previously playing for the Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Toronto Maple Leafs. This season, Foligno has scored 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 39 regular-season games.

Jeremy Colliton will continue to oversee the Chicago Blackhawks’ rebuild in years to come.

The team announced on Tuesday that Colliton agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Chicago through the 2022-23 NHL season.  The news was also confirmed on their official social media.

According to Blackhawks president of hockey operations Stan Bowman, the organization is excited by Colliton’s relationship with the players and his ability to develop young talent.

“This, coupled with his vast knowledge of the game, exceptional communication skills, and determination to win, makes us extremely confident Jeremy has what it takes to lead our team back to an elite level as we continue to build a roster that can compete year in and year out,” Bowman added.

Jeremy Colliton took over the Blackhawks early in the 2018-19 NHL season, succeeding legendary Joel Quenneville. After missing the playoffs in his first season, Colliton led the Blackhawks to the postseason in 2019-20 thanks to the NHL’s expanded format. Still, Chicago proved they belong there as they eliminated favorites Edmonton Oilers in the first round.

Colliton, who briefly played in the NHL with the New York Islanders before retiring early, spent his early coaching career in Europe. In 2017-18, he took over the Blackhawks’ top minor affiliate Rockford IceHogs, guiding them to 40 wins during the regular season and a Conference Finals appearance.

Chicago Blackhawks haven’t given up on the hope that they will have goalie Corey Crawford for the upcoming Stanley Cup Qualifiers. Crawford was deemed “unfit to play” at the start of training camp, but the team’s general manager Stan Bowman recently expressed optimism that things might change in the following days.

Blackhawks are currently scheduled to travel to Edmonton for NHL 2019/20 season resume on Sunday, and Bowman told reporters that he’s “hopeful” on Crawford taking part in the trip.

“We are hopeful on that,” Bowman told reporters on Tuesday. “I think we’ll be able to give you a better idea when we get closer to the weekend. But that’s something we’re still shooting for. I don’t have any definitive comments right now, but we’re still hoping that’s the case.”

However, Bowman explained that the team currently operates under the notion that their goalkeeping depth chart will comprise out of Malcolm Subban, Kevin Lankinen, Collin Delia, and Matt Tomkins.

“Right now Corey’s not here, so we’re focused on the other four goalies,” he added. “If and when Corey’s ready, then we’ll have that conversation. But I think it’s best to stick with where we are today, and not jump too far ahead.”

Corey Crawford spent his entire career with Chicago Blackhawks and was part of two Stanley Cup-winning rosters. He played 40 games this season, posting 16-20-3 with 2.77 goals-against average. Crawford’s .917 save percentage was fifth-best in NHL among goalies with 40+ games.

Chicago enters Stanley Cup Qualifiers as 12th seed and will face No.5 seed Edmonton Oilers in a best-of-five series. The winner will make the playoff cut.
