The underachieving New York Mets have been quite busy ahead of the MLB trade deadline, dealing a number of veteran players in exchange for prospects. However, the team’s general manager Billy Eppler insists that this isn’t a “fire sale” and that the Mets are not heading towards a rebuild.

The Mets entered the 2023 campaign with the highest payroll in the league and expectations to compete for the World Series. But with 105 games already behind them, the New York team is at 50-55 and is a long shot to make the playoffs.

As a result, the Mets opted to move on from some of their high-paid veterans, trading closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins and moving three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers.

“I do want to be clear that it’s not a rebuild. It’s not a fire sale,” Eppler told reporters on Sunday when asked about the moves. “It’s not a liquidation.”

Despite this, Eppler indicated that the franchise will remain busy as the trade deadline approaches.

“We’re going to listen, but our price points are high,” Eppler added. “We have valuations on our existing personnel, and the bar is high to meet it, but we are willing in certain circumstances to use Steve’s investment and kind of repurpose that investment to serve the larger goal, which is to build a championship organization.”

After five years, the Los Angeles Angels are moving on from general manager Billy Eppler.

All five seasons under Eppler have been losing ones, making the decision almost inevitable.

The Angels are led on the field by Mike Trout, who is arguably one of the greatest players in history. Despite having a generational talent like Trout, the Angels have been unable to build a winning team around him. The next general manager will be the third general manager Trout has had in his career in Los Angeles.

There are rumors circulating that the Angels are interested in hiring Dave Dombrowski to be the new general manager, who was most recently the president of baseball operations for the Boston Red Sox but was released by the team in September 2019.

Eppler was released with one season remaining on his contract. All signs have been pointing to this move since September 2019, when Angels owner Arte Moreno fired manager Brad Ausmus, who was Eppler’s guy.

Whoever the new general manager will be, his goal will be singular—to get Mike Trout into the playoffs. During his incredible career of almost a decade, Trout has only been to the postseason once.

Billy Eppler, the general manager who took over the reins of the Los Angeles Angels in the middle of the 2015 season, was dismissed from his post after a fifth consecutive losing season in 2020.

Eppler, who took over after former GM Jerry Dipoto resigned in July 2015, took over a roster which included baseball’s best player in outfielder Mike Trout but was never able to take advantage of a talented squad that always had holes in it.

The former New York Yankees assistant GM made some high-profile acquisitions during his time with the Angels, including trading for shortstop Andrelton Simmons and signing high-profile players like Shohei Ohtani, Anthony Rendon, and Justin Upton to big contracts. Despite this, his Angels finished below .500 and frustrated fans during each of the past five seasons.

The Angels were speculated to be a playoff contender heading into 2020 after the $245 million addition of star third baseman Anthony Rendon, but the same problems reared their head once again. Los Angeles posted baseball’s sixth-worst ERA (5.09) and could never find consistency.

The franchise and president John Carpino will now embark upon a search for a new GM who they hope will finally be able to piece together a supporting cast around Trout and Rendon to lead them back to contention.
