Chicago Cubs remain hopeful of getting second baseman Ben Zobrist back on the field before the end of this MLB season according to team’s president Theo Epstein.

Zobrist hadn’t played baseball since May 7th, when he was placed on restricted list due to “personal reasons.” Although he isn’t expected to return anytime soon, Epstein told reporters that there is a possibility for the 38-year-old to play “later in the season.”

“Certainly the door is open and the possibility of a return is there for him later in the season,” – said Epstein. “We’ll see how things evolve. We’d all love to see him back here and he would love to be back. We’ll see if that can come to fruition.”

According to ESPN’s sources, Ben Zobrist remained in touch with the team during his absence and told his teammates that he might join them in September. If he doesn’t return in 2019, there is a possibility that we won’t see Zobrist in Cubs’ jersey anymore as he is in the final year of his contract.

Zobrist played a total of 26 games this season, in which he batted .241 with 10 RBIs and zero homers.
