Veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is having a rough 2021 NFL season, and his poor performances are a big reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently on a three-game losing streak. But despite this, the Steelers still do not have any intention to make a QB change.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin said that Roethlisberger still remains the right choice under center for the franchise.

“Absolutely,” Tomlin said after being asked if Roethlisberger is the best option at QB for this team. “What he does and what he’s done makes me really comfortable in saying that.”

So far in the season, Roethlisberger has struggled to be consistent, and this has caused major troubles for the Steelers’ offense. The 39-year-old superstar has 1,033 passing yards so far in the season on a 64.1 completion percentage but only managed to throw four touchdowns while turning over the ball five times.

Roethlisberger also frequently misses open receivers, which especially played a role in a recent loss to the Green Bay Packers. As ESPN points out, the veteran has a 36.3 QBR so far in the season and ranks fifth worse in the league behind four rookies.

As a result, the Steelers currently find themselves at the bottom of the AFC North standings with a 1-3 record.

Veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger wants to make another run with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021. And he’s willing to leave some money on the table to do so.

Speaking with The Athletic on Thursday, Roethlisberger said that he wants to “go one more year” and believes he can give the Steelers “a real chance and winning.”

“I want to do everything I can and made that very clear to them from the very beginning that it was my idea to basically help the team however I can this year,” said Roethlisberger.

The best way Roethlisberger can help Pittsburgh is by agreeing to restructure his deal, something he is well aware of: “I don’t care ’bout my pay at all this year!,” he added.

Under his current contract, Ben Roethlisberger would count $41.25 million against the Steelers cap in 2021. This isn’t a number that the franchise can afford, especially with several key players being up for an extension.

There are several ways Pittsburgh can avoid this massive hit.

The first one would see Roethlisberger retiring, which isn’t something that the player is thinking about strongly, according to his recent statements. The second one would see Steelers releasing Big Ben, which also isn’t a probable option since he’s considered a franchise legend and deserves a better send-off.

The most likely path that the franchise will take is approaching Roethlisberger with an offer for a restructured deal that would also come with a significantly lower salary. This way, the team would get financial relief, and the player would get one more year before eventually retiring.

“I think we’d like to see Ben back for another year if that can work,” said Steelers president Art Rooney in a separate interview. “But as we said, there’s a lot of work to be done if that can happen; there may need to be decisions on both ends for that to happen.”

Pittsburgh Steelers recently caught football world off guard when they selected Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph with the 76th overall pick in 2018 NFL Draft. That immediately raised questions about the future of their starting QB Ben Roethlisberger, and whether the organization intends to make Rudolph his heir.

Roethlisberger doesn’t have any problems with that, but doesn’t see it happening anytime soon since he plans on playing for “three to five more years.”

Well, that’s fine. He can do that,” – Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Tuesday when speaking about the possibility that Rudolph will take over as the Steelers starting quarterback. “But I plan on playing for three to five more years, depending on how the line goes and staying healthy if I can stay healthy.

If he’s going to be their guy, that’s great, but in my perfect world it’s not going to be for a while.” – he added.

According to the Steelers, the organization didn’t intend to draft a quarterback at all but couldn’t pass on the opportunity to take Mason Rudolph, believing he isn’t any worse than the QBs taken in the first round. Rudolph ended his senior season at Oklahoma State passing for 4,553 yards and 35 touchdowns.

If we are to believe the numbers, there are no reasons for the Steelers to make the quarterback transition anytime soon. Ben Roethlisberger ended 2017 with 4,251 passing yards, his fifth NFL season where he passed for more than 4,000 yards. The 36-year-old completed 360 out of 561 passes and had 28 touchdowns alongside 14 interceptions. In the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Roethlisberger faced the league’s top passing defense and still ended up with 469 passing yards and five touchdowns. Despite his monster game, Pittsburgh Steelers were eliminated, losing the game 42–45.
