After being more than two years out of the NFL, former New York Giants’ head coach Ben McAdoo returned to the league. Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Wednesday that McAdoo joined their organization as a quarterbacks coach.

McAdoo was a candidate for a number of jobs since being fired by the Giants, including the offensive coordinator position with Arizona Cardinals after the team hired Kliff Kingsbury as their new head coach. This offseason he also interviewed with Cleveland Browns for an unspecified position on Kevin Stefanski’s staff.

This will be McAdoo’s second stint as a QB coach, as he previously served on the same position with Green Bay Packers in 2011 and 2012.

“Coach McAdoo brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the quarterback room, and we’re excited to add him to our offensive coaching staff,” said Jags’ head coach Doug Marrone via team’s official website. “He has mentored several great quarterbacks throughout his career, and his understanding of the position will be a valuable addition to our team and for the development of that group.”

Ben McAdoo has built a reputation of an offensive guru during his time as an OC of the New York Giants. Due to his success in transforming the team’s offense, he was selected as Tom Coughlin’s successor in 2016. However, McAdoo failed to meet the expectations of the organization during his time as a head coach and was fired after posting 13-15 record in two seasons.

McAdoo is expected to face a tough job in Jacksonville, especially since the team’s QB situation seems unresolved. The nominal starter is Nick Foles, who was viewed as a marquee free-agent signing last offseason, but struggled with injuries and production in 2019. The Jags also have second-year QB Gardner Minshew, who showed promise while stepping in for Foles and might have his eyes on the starting job as well.

The New York Giants have fired their head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese on Monday. This was confirmed by the team’s president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch at a press conference. McAdoo’s and Reese’s dismissal comes after 24-17 loss to the Raiders, which brought the Giants to a 2-10 record this season.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was named the interim coach, while assistant general manager Kevin Abrams will take the GM duties.

Steve and I spoke after yesterday’s game in Oakland and agreed to talk again today,” – said Mara. “This morning, we decided in the best interest of the franchise that we would relieve Jerry and Ben of their duties, effective immediately. This season has been incredibly disappointing for the organization and our fans, and while it would be ideal to make these kinds of decisions at the conclusion of the season, we simply felt now is the time to prepare for a fresh start.

The New York Giants were predicted to have an outstanding 2017 NFL season, with some even seeing them as a Super Bowl team. However, they have lost their first five games and then lost several valuable players due to injuries which made the team perform even worse. Now the Giants have NFL’s second-worst record (tied with San Francisco 49ers) and are ranked 31st in points scored.

Ben McAdoo worked as an assistant coach for various college and NFL teams before joining the New York Giants as an offensive coordinator in 2014. He was named the team’s head coach in January 2016 and led the team to 11–5 record. With McAdoo, the Giants returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2011 but were stopped by the Green Bay Packers in the first round. He gained media attention in the last week for benching the starting quarterback Eli Manning.

Eli Manning’s streak of 210 consecutive regular-season starts as a quarterback for the New York Giants will come to an end on Sunday. The Giants coach Ben McAdoo revealed on Tuesday that Geno Smith will start the next game against the Oakland Raiders instead of Manning.

Geno will start this week,” – said McAdoo in a statement. “Over the last five games, we will take a look at Geno, and we will also give [rookie third-round pick] Davis [Webb] an opportunity.

Manning had the chance to keep the streak alive since McAdoo gave him the option to start the game while he would be substituted for Smith later on.

Coach McAdoo told me I could continue to start while Geno and Davis are given an opportunity to play,” – said Manning. “My feeling is that if you are going to play the other guys, play them. Starting just to keep the streak going and knowing you won’t finish the game and have a chance to win it is pointless to me, and it tarnishes the streak. Like I always have, I will be ready to play if and when I am needed. I will help Geno and Davis prepare to play as well as they possibly can.

Eli Manning’s 210 games as a starter streak is second in the NFL history for quarterbacks, just behind the Green Bay Packers’ Brett Favre who had 297 stars. The last game that Manning didn’t start was on November 14, 2004, when Kurt Warner started the game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The team’s decision to bench Manning at this point of his career is a way of exploring quarterbacks options for the future.

Eli Manning was selected by the San Diego Chargers in 2004 NFL Draft with the first overall pick and then traded to the New York Giants. He lead the Giants to two Super Bowl appearances in 2007 and 2011, both of which the team won.
