A spring full of uncertainty has ravaged the sports world amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has turned both the world of sports and societies as a whole upside-down over the past month and a half.

While most European soccer leagues are waiting it out to see how and if they can finish the current season, the Belgian Pro League has decided to make a proactive move, canceling the rest of the season.

This move leaves Club Brugge, which currently has a fifteen-point lead in the standings, as the league’s champion, allowing them to qualify for a spot in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League.

Second-place Gent will also book a ticket to the qualifying rounds of the 2020-21 edition of the continent’s top competition.

The normal system of the Belgian league has the top six teams in the table advance to a playoff system. This year, however, the regular season’s final standings will stay as is and the playoffs will not take place.

There was only one game left in the regular season, meaning that the table would not have been affected by the final game.

Now, other leagues in the continent must now balance their options and decide whether to follow in Belgium’s footsteps or hold out until the season can be resumed.

France is the first nation to clinch the 2018 World Cup spot after a 1-0 win against Belgium. Samuel Umtiti scored a header from Antoine Griezmann’s corner at the beginning of the second half, which ultimately proved to be the only goal of the game.

France will now wait for the winner of the other semi-finals match between England and Croatia, as they look to win their second World Cup title after lifting the 1998 World Cup trophy. This will be their first final appearance since 2006 World Cup when they lost on penalties against Italy.

Although this supposed to be a high-octane clash between two attacking-minded teams, it didn’t quite turn out that way. Both teams had their chances, but neither managed to turn them into clear-cut opportunities as defenses were on the top of their game.

France had 19 shots compared to Belgium’s nine, but it was Belgium that controlled the ball for the most part. They had 64 percent of the possession but failed to capitalize on it as their main stars like Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard were kept quiet for the most of the match. It looked like Belgium didn’t have the same motivation as they did in the 2-1 win against Brazil since it never looked like they were the better team.

It was a close game and it was very tight and it was going to be decided by that bit of luck in front of goal.” – said Belgium’s coach Roberto Martinez after the game. “The attitude of the players was brilliant and we couldn’t ask for anymore. We have to understand one team wins and the other loses, and we did what we could.

Belgium stars Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard scored two goals apiece to guide their country to the knockout stages of the 2018 World Cup as they punished Tunisia 5-2 on Saturday.

The result leaves the Belgians as the favorites to win Group G and also adds impetus to their status as one of the favorites to win the World Cup.

Belgium was the top team throughout the game against the Africans who have extended their winless World Cup run to 13 games.

Belgium found the lead during the 13th minute after Tunisian goalkeeper Syam Ben Youssef brought down Hazard in the area and the Belgian captain made no mistake in converting the resulting spot-kick.

Lukaku doubled the lead during the 16th minute following a brilliant pass from Dries Mertens. Tunisia, however, managed to pull one back just two minutes later as Dylan Bronn took advantage of some shaky defending from the Belgians.

The Belgians scored their third and put the result beyond doubt during first-half stoppage time as Thomas Meunier fed in Lukaku who scored his second for the game.

Hazard completed the rout six minutes into the second half as he linked up with Kevin de Bruyne.

Lukaku’s brace took his tally for the tournament to 4 goals. He is level with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo as the top scorer of the tournament.
