The Baltimore Orioles tapped into the free agency market earlier this week, signing second baseman Kolten Wong and right-hand pitcher Julio Teheran to minor league contracts.

Wong and Teheran will get an opportunity to earn a spot on the active roster, being invited to Orioles spring training camp.

Wong spent the 2023 season with the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, batting .183 with four home runs, 27 RBIs, and three stolen bases in 87 games combined. He previously spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers, winning two Gold Glove Awards and three Fielding Bible Awards.

“I think just adding another player that we’re very familiar with and has been a major league second baseman for a long time,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said after the moves were announced. “We’re just continuing to add talented guys, and a veteran presence is important, also.”

Teheran, on the other hand, is a two-time All-Star who played his first nine years in the majors with the Atlanta Braves before embarking on stints with the Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, and Milwaukee Brewers. He made 11 starts with the Brewers in 2023, ending the campaign with a 3-5 record, 4.40 ERA, and 50 strikeouts.

“Like we talked about a lot, you can never have enough pitching,” added Hyde. “To bring in another guy who’s got a lot of major league experience, been a starter in this league for a long time, we’re going to take a look, and hopefully he can help us.”

The Baltimore Orioles have a new owner. According to multiple reports, the Angelos family has struck a deal that will see an ownership group led by David Rubenstein, Baltimore native and Carlyle Group Inc. co-founder, buy the franchise for $1.725 billion.

Rubenstein will reportedly be a controlling owner but has assembled a team of investors with deep pockets, including Ares Management Corp. co-founder Mike Arougheti, to help him get the acquisition over the line. Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., who spent all of his 21 years in majors with the Orioles, is also part of the new ownership group.

Before the deal becomes official, MLB has to give it a green light. In order for the sale to become official, at least 75% of existing owners have to give it a vote of approval.

Rubenstein is known as a philanthropist and a big baseball fan. He previously attempted to buy the Washington Nationals, but after that bid failed, he zeroed in on acquiring the Orioles. His group will first acquire 40% of the stake in the franchise before receiving the remaining 60% at a later date.

Orioles’ current owner, Peter Angelos, bought the franchise in 1993 for $173 million, the highest price paid for a sports franchise at the time. Angelos remained in control of the franchise until 2019, when he stepped down due to health issues and ceded the control to his son, John.

Under the ownership of the Angelos family, the Orioles made six postseason trips and had two AL Championship Series appearances. They finished the 2023 regular season with 101 wins, their most since 1979, before being swept by the Texas Rangers in the AL Divisional Series.

The Baltimore Orioles are not ready to rule out the possibility of All-Star reliever Félix Bautista playing again in 2023. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Orioles general manager Mike Elias confirmed that Bautista is dealing with a partial UCL tear in his right elbow but said that the 28-year-old player could still be available for the postseason.

Bautista landed on Injured Reserve in late August after feeling discomfort in his right elbow. According to Elias, Bautista is currently throwing, and the team will take some time to decide on his availability.

“I don’t have any knowledge about where exactly this is leading other than we can take this time right now to take that conservative approach and allow him to throw,” said Elias.

The Orioles don’t need Bautista just yet, as they comfortably sit at the top of AL East with a 91-52 record. They are 8-2 in their last 10 games and have three games in hand over the second-placed Tampa Bay Rays. However, Bautista is a difference-maker, and his return for the postseason would significantly increase Baltimore’s chances to make a deep run.

Bautista, who made his first All-Star appearance this season, is 8-2 in 2023, having played 56 games and finished 46. He has 33 saves with a 1.48 ERA and 110 strikeouts.

The high-flying Baltimore Orioles have bolstered their bullpen ahead of the crucial final stretch of the 2023 MLB regular season. The team claimed All-Star reliever Jorge Lopez off waivers from the Miami Marlins, confirming the move on Saturday.

Lopez started the season with the Minnesota Twins before being traded to the Marlins in July. He appeared in 49 games combined and has a 6-2 record with a 6.13 ERA and three saves.

After claiming Lopez, the Orioles designated right-hander Logan Gillaspie for assignment. Gillaspie, playing in his second season in MLB, made 11 relief appearances in 2023 and has a 0-1 record with a 6.00 ERA and eight strikeouts.

The move represents a reunion for Lopez and the Orioles, as the Puerto Rico native previously played in Baltimore between 2020 and 2022. Lopez received his only All-Star nod as a member of the Orioles in 2022 before being traded to the Twins in the second part of the season.

Lopez, who also played with the Milwaukee Brewers and the Kansas City Royals, has a career record of 22–40 with a 5.47 ERA, 402 strikeouts, and 27 saves.

It is important to note that Lopez won’t be able to help the Orioles in the postseason. Only the players that were on the team’s 40-man roster or 60-day Injured List before September 1st are eligible to suit up for the playoffs.

The high-flying Baltimore Orioles have acquired right-hand pitcher Shintaro Fujinami in a trade with the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. The Orioles gave up minor league pitcher Easton Lucas to close the deal.

The trade was officially confirmed by the Orioles on the team’s social media accounts.

Fujinami is currently in his first MLB season. He joined the A’s on a one-year, $3.25 million contract after previously spending his entire career with the Hanshin Tigers of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball League.

The 29-year-old player started his MLB journey as a starter but ended up being moved to the bullpen after going 0-4 in his first four starts. He played a total of 34 games and has a 5-8 record with an 8.57 ERA and 51 strikeouts.

Lucas, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in the majors. He spent the 2023 season with Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk and has a 2.92 ERA with 38 strikeouts.

By acquiring Fujinami, the Orioles are betting that a change of scenery can lead the player to replicate some of his impressive form from NPB. They are also adding much-needed depth to their bullpen, which performed well this season but is considered top-heavy.

The Baltimore Orioles are set to hand right-hander Grayson Rodriguez his big league debut as they go up against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, sources revealed on Tuesday. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel ranked Rodriguez as the number 12 prospect in baseball.

While the 23-year-old player was expected to be included in the rotation for the Orioles’ opening day 10-9 win against the Boston Red Sox, he missed out on a spot after posting just a 7.04 ERA in 15 1/3 innings during the team’s spring training. He was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.

Rodriguez was finally handed his opportunity after right-hander Kyle Bradish suffered a foot injury on Monday. As a result of this setback, Tyler Wells was given the task of pitching in relief, with Kyle Gibson moving up the rotation to leave an empty spot for Rodriguez.

The 11th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, Rodriguez has posted a 25-9 record with a 2.49 ERA in 70 appearances across five minor league seasons.

The rumors about MLB’s Orioles leaving Baltimore have been denied by the franchise’s chairman and CEO John Angelos. In a statement shared on Monday, Angelos said that he has no intention of moving Orioles and that the team will remain in the city “as long as Fort McHenry is standing watch over Inner Harbor.”

The source of Orioles’ relocation rumors was actually John’s brother Louis Angelos. Louis recently filed a lawsuit in which he says that his brother is seeking to seize control over the franchise with plans to move it to Tennessee.

“John intends to maintain absolute control over the Orioles — to manage, to sell, or, if he chooses, to move to Tennessee (where he has a home and where his wife’s career is headquartered) — without having to answer to anyone,” the lawsuit states.

However, in a statement shared on Orioles’ official social media, John Angelos says that there is “nothing uncertain about Orioles future” and that the team is staying put.

“The Orioles will forever play at Oriole Park, and at no time ever have we contemplated anything different,” the statement said.

The Orioles have been playing in Baltimore since 1954. The team was purchased by John and Louis’ father, Peter Angelos, in 1993 for $173 million, which was a record for a sports franchise at the time. However, due to deteriorating health, Angelos Sr. decided to establish a trust and make his sons and his wife Georgia co-trustees.

Baltimore Orioles fans finally have something to be cheerful about this season. Their team finished with the worst record in the league, but this resulted in the Orioles owning the first overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Baltimore finished their 2021 MLB season with a 12-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays that dropped them to a 52-110 record. This tied them with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who got a 5-4 win against the Colorado Rockies to wrap up their campaign with 52-110 as well.

Despite the two franchises having the same record, the no.1 pick went to the Orioles thanks to a tiebreaker that gives the advantage to the team with the worst campaign in the previous seasons. Since the teams also shared the same record (25-35) in 2020, their performance in 2019 was considered. Baltimore was 54–108, while Arizona was 85–77 two years ago.

This will be the second time in four years that the Orioles get to pick first in the draft. They also had the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft when they selected catcher Adley Rutschman. He is yet to make a majors appearance for Baltimore.

The Texas Rangers will get to pick third behind the Orioles and the Diamondbacks, while the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals will follow.

The Baltimore Orioles finally managed to put an end to their lengthy losing streak. The Orioles, previously owners of 19 straight losses, faced the LA Angels on Wednesday and got away with a 10-6 win come-from-behind win.

Things didn’t start well for Baltimore as they found themselves in a 6-2 hole in the fourth inning. However, they got a break thanks to the struggles of Angels’ two-way star Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani performed poorly on the mound, treating Orioles’ hitters with three home runs and four earned runs in five innings. The 27-year-old player had equally bad day at-bats, striking out three times.

This opened the door for Baltimore, who found their way back into the game thanks to an outstanding effort by outfielder Anthony Santander, who scored three runs and had one home run. Right fielder DJ Steward added two runs and a homer.

Entering Wednesday, the Orioles were just three losses away from breaking the unflattering record for the longest losing streak in American League history.  The record currently stands at 21 straight losses, set by Orioles themselves in the 1988 MLB season.

“There was tension in our dugout, there was pressure. Everybody was on the top step,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde after the game. “Our guys just really wanted this one. We’re tired of hearing, tired of seeing it on TV. Everybody’s tired of it.”

Veteran outfielder Nick Markakis announced his retirement from the MLB on Friday. Markakis played 15 seasons in the majors, suiting up for the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves.

Markakis announced his decision via The Athletic, telling the magazine that he wants to spend more time with his family.

“I just think it’s my time,” said Markakis. “I think I played the right way, and that’s all that really matters to me.”

According to the 37-year-old veteran, he made the decision to retire shortly after 2020 wrapped up and didn’t attempt to land a spot on a roster for this season. Several teams reached out to Markakis to see if he was interested but couldn’t lure him into playing in 2021.

Nick Markakis was initially drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in both 2001 and 2002, but he decided to play college baseball in both instances. In 2003, he was drafted again, this time by the Orioles with the seventh overall pick, and joined Baltimore’s farm system.

Markakis made his MLB debut for the Orioles in 2006 and went on to spend nine seasons with the franchise while playing 1,365 games. He left the team in 2015 as a free agent and signed with the Braves.

In Atlanta, Markakis played some of his best baseball, earning one All-Star nod and Silver Slugger and Golden Glove Awards. He’ll retire with a .288 batting average, 2,388 hits, 189 home runs, and 1,046 RBIs.
