The Bucs were the lone underdogs hosting a postseason game in the 2023 NFL Playoffs. The weakness of their division and 9-8 record didn’t project much confidence against the talented 11-6 Eagles. On top of that, Tampa Bay’s quarterback Baker Mayfield was questionable for the game while dealing with a rib injury.

Despite all of this, the Bucs and Mayfield rushed to a 0-10 lead in the first half and didn’t take the foot off the gas until late in the fourth quarter. Mayfield finished the game with 337 passing yards and three touchdowns while being careful with the football.

The Bucs’ defense also showed up ready to play, limiting the Eagles to 276 total yards while not allowing a single third-down conversion. 

“We worked extremely hard to get a chance to be in the playoffs, and we just wanted an opportunity. Our guys came out and played really really well. … Once again, the defense played lights out. We’re happy, but we’ve still got more to go,” Mayfield said after the game.

The Bucs will once again be the underdogs when they travel to Detroit to face the Lions, but it appears that this team isn’t too concerned about that.

However, that didn’t stop Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield from becoming only the second quarterback in history to have a perfect passer rating at the legendary stadium in Sunday’s 34-20 victory over the Packers.

Mayfield delivered arguably his best performance of the season against the Packers. He completed 22 out of 28 pass attempts while throwing for 381 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions for a perfect rating of 158.3. The only other QB with a perfect passer rating at Lambeau Field is Packers’ legend Aaron Rodgers, who did it back in 2019.

But Baker’s our guy right now — experience-wise and just understanding the playbook just a little bit better.”

Despite starting the campaign with three wins, Darnold fell apart later in the season and was even benched at one point.

Baker Mayfield’s era in Cleveland is officially over. The Browns announced that they have traded the 27-year-old quarterback to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

According to the official announcement, the Browns are entitled to a 2024 NFL Draft selection. They will reportedly get fourth-round or fifth-round selection depending on Mayfield’s time on the field.

Mayfield was on the trade market ever since the Browns finalized a trade for the Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson back in March. The Panthers were immediately one of the candidates for his next destination, but their unwillingness to take on Mayfield’s full $18.8 million salary in 2022 proved to be a stumbling block in the conversations.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the two teams eventually agreed to split the salary in a way that the Browns will pay $10.5 million while the Carolina will pitch in $4.85 million. Mayfield himself gave up the remaining $3.45 million in order to facilitate the move.

During the game, Mayfield was at one point unable to complete a pass on 10 consecutive throws; the longest streak since 2019.

With his surgery in the pipeline, Mayfield revealed that he is still unsure of whether or not he will play in the Browns’ home game against Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. He will consult with his family and agent before coming to a decision.

In addition to his shoulder troubles, Mayfield struggled with a right knee contusion as well as left foot soreness earlier on in the season.

The Cleveland Browns spent the majority of the offseason saying they are committed to Baker Mayfield as their franchise quarterback of the future. Their recent actions, however, indicate this isn’t the case.

According to multiple reports, the Browns joined the list of teams trying to trade for the Houston Texans’ Pro Bowl QB Deshaun Watson. Cleveland is reportedly ready to be aggressive in their pursuit and have already met with the player to make their pitch. Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract and would have to waive it in order to make any trade possible.

Watson is reportedly also considering the Carolina Panthers, the New Orleans Saints, and the Atlanta Falcons as his possible destination. All the previously mentioned teams are believed to have a deal in place with Houston and only need to convince the player to get the trade over the finishing line.

Browns’ decision to pursue Deshaun Watson didn’t sit well with Mayfield, who acknowledged his uncertain future in Cleveland on social media on Tuesday. He issued a lengthy statement that felt like a goodbye note, although he insisted there is no “hidden meaning” behind the message.

“This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me,” Mayfield explained. “We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through all the ups and downs.”

Mayfield is coming off a disappointing season that saw him struggle with injuries and consistency. He completed 60.5 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns in 14 games. The Browns were 6-8 with him as a starter while finishing the season with an 8-9 record overall and missing the postseason.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield confirmed on Monday night that he is set to undergo shoulder surgery to repair his torn labrum in his non-throwing left shoulder. Since first incurring the injury in week 2 of the regular season, Mayfield has continued to represent the Cleveland Browns on the field. It is only now that the Browns are out of contention for a playoff spot that Mayfield has decided to have the surgery.

“Now it’s time for me to start looking at what’s in the best interest of me and my health,” Mayfield stated following his team’s 26-14 loss at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday. During the game, Mayfield was at one point unable to complete a pass on 10 consecutive throws; the longest streak since 2019.

With his surgery in the pipeline, Mayfield revealed that he is still unsure of whether or not he will play in the Browns’ home game against Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. He will consult with his family and agent before coming to a decision.

In addition to his shoulder troubles, Mayfield struggled with a right knee contusion as well as left foot soreness earlier on in the season.

It’s safe to say that Odell Beckham Jr. didn’t live up to his reputation as one of the game’s best wideouts since joining the Cleveland Browns in 2019. His father, Odell Beckham Sr., believes this is because the Browns’ quarterback Baker Mayfield ignores Beckham Jr. during games.

Beckham Sr. recently made his opinion public by sharing a video on Instagram that shows all the times that his son was wide open, but Mayfield decided not to pass him the ball. The video also showcases plays that saw Mayfield targeting and missing Beckham Jr. due to overthrows or bad ball placement.

Beckham Sr. also didn’t hesitate to be active in the comments section by giving a stamp of approval when one fan wrote that Mayfield is “either hating on Odell or he just doesn’t want him shining.”

Later that day, Ohio native and NBA superstar LeBron James also added to the controversy when he showed his support to Odell Beckham Jr. on Twitter by writing that “OBJ will show again why he’s special.” He also added #FreeOBJ as part of the post, seemingly calling the Browns to trade Beckham.

Reportedly, Cleveland doesn’t intend to move Beckham Jr. before the NFL’s trade deadline despite the 28-year-old’s limited impact. They did receive some offers for the wideout lately, but neither made sense for the organization, according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini.

Beckham played six games in 2021 and has 17 catches for 232 yards on 34 targets. He is yet to score a touchdown this season.
