The start of the Olympic Games in Tokyo has been officially rescheduled for July 23rd, 2021. This was announced on Monday by the Tokyo organizing committee.

Last week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to postpone the competition until next year due to ongoing coronavirus pandemic. After considering several options, including a possible spring date, the organizers opted to have the opening ceremony exactly one year after it was originally scheduled to take place.

“The schedule for the games is key to preparing for the games,” said Yoshiro Mori, the president of the Tokyo organizing committee. “This will only accelerate our progress.”

According to Mori, moving the Olympics to spring was rejected as an option due to other competitions that usually take place during that time including major soccer leagues and sports competitions in North America. The committee also wanted to give an opportunity for more athletes to qualify, as numerous qualifying events were recently canceled due to coronavirus.

IOC initially set a four-week deadline in order to make the final decision on whether to postpone the Olympics or move forward with the previously set date. Following the pressure from both countries and athletes, however, the decision was made to postpone it for 2021.

Philadelphia 76ers’ head coach Brett Brown is making a return to Australia national basketball team. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Brown is finalizing a deal to coach the team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Brown has a long history with Australia’s national team, as he previously served as head coach between 2009 and 2012. His biggest success was leading the team to quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympics. He also served as an assistant coach on the team between 1995 and 2003.

Australia’s national basketball team could be in the mix for a medal on the upcoming Olympics, thanks to their talented roster highlighted by 76ers’ All-Star Ben Simmons. Other NBA players on Australia’s roster include San Antonio Spurs’ Patty Mills, Utah Jazz’s Joe Ingles and Dante Exum, and Cleveland Cavaliers’ Matthew Dellavedova. The country took part in 14 Olympic games so far, but never managed to win a medal.

Australia’s most recent big competition was FIBA World Cup in China where they coached by Andrej Lemanis. The team managed to win the 4th place at the tournament, despite the fact that Simmons decided not to play.
