In the past few months, it was rumored that Robben, who retired last summer, was considering a comeback with several MLS clubs and Brazilian side Botafogo being interested in his services. However, the 36-year-old ended up choosing the club where he started his career with the intention to help Groningen β€œin this difficult time.”

Former Bayern Munich star winger Arjen Robben announced the end of his illustrious career last summer, but it appears the 36-year-old Dutchman isn’t 100 percent sure this was the right decision. In a recent interview with Sport1, Robben said that he couldn’t rule out a possible comeback in the future.

Robben spent the recent few weeks training with Bayern’s team, which sparked rumors that he might suit up for Bundesliga giant once again.

“I have to disappoint you. My comeback at Bayern is a hundred percent impossible,” said Robben addressing these speculations.

When asked about the possibility of playing for another club, Robben was less decisive and didn’t rule out this scenario.

“You never know. I don’t want to say yes or no now,” he added.

There would definitely be an interest in Arjen Robben’s services, considering that he was viewed as one of the best wingers of his generation. Robben received offers to unretired even before this interview, with Brazilian powerhouse Botafogo openly expressing interest in signing him. The club’s vice president Ricardo Rotenberg even told the media that he had exploratory talks about the move with the player’s representatives.

Over the course of his career, Robben played with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich among other clubs. He left the biggest mark in Germany, where he won eight Bundesliga titles and one UEFA Champions League trophy.

Former Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben could make a surprising return to soccer. Brazilian media outlet Globo Esporte recently reported that Campeonato Brasileiro side Botafogo are trying to lure Robben out of retirement.

Robben retired following the end of 2018/19 season after his contract with Bundesliga giants expired. The 36-year-old had several offers on the table to continue playing, including some from MLS but decided to call it quits.

Still, Botafogo’s vice president Ricardo Rotenberg isn’t entirely convinced that Robben had completely lost the passion for soccer. Rotenberg told that the club made an approach to player’s representatives and are feeling positive about the outcome.

“For me, he was the best player at the 2014 World Cup,” Rotenberg told Globo Esporte. “Robben is my idol, a great player. There is always a risk if you haven’t played football for too long. But I tried, and he answered. He’s happy that Botafogo approached him.”

Arjen Robben retired as one of the most decorated players in Dutch history, having won Spanish La Liga, English Premier League, German Bundesliga, and Dutch Eredivisie. Robben was especially dominant in Germany, where he helped Bayern win eight national championships, including seven consecutive ones.  He also has a UEFA Champions League medal and has won several individual honors.

Robben was also a prominent part of the Netherlands’ national team, helping the country to win silver and bronze medals at FIFA World Cup. He played 96 times for the national side, scoring 37 goals.
