Legendary Dutch winger Arjen Robben announced over the weekend that he is coming out of retirement and will play with his boyhood club FC Groningen next season.

In the past few months, it was rumored that Robben, who retired last summer, was considering a comeback with several MLS clubs and Brazilian side Botafogo being interested in his services. However, the 36-year-old ended up choosing the club where he started his career with the intention to help Groningen β€œin this difficult time.”

“The club can use all help in this difficult time,” said Robben. “I have thought a lot lately about what I can do to help the club.β€œ

Robben spent the majority of his youth career with Groningen and played two seasons with the organization as a pro. He left the club in 2002 to join Dutch powerhouse PSV Eindhoven.

“I am working on my comeback. If it will succeed, I don’t know. But won’t be about my motivation. It is my dream to play in the jersey of FC Groningen again,” he added.

Arjen Robben had an illustrious career as a pro and remains as one of the most decorated Dutch players in history in club competitions. He won close to 30 trophies with PSV, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, while also winning a number of individual achievements.

Robben also has 96 games and 37 goals scored with Netherland’s national team, with whom he was FIFA World Cup runner-up in 2010.
