The Arizona Coyotes are close to solving their arena problem, but the solution isn’t the one that hockey fans in Arizona will appreciate. According to multiple reports, the Coyotes are expected to relocate to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Since their lease with the city of Glendale for Desert Diamond Arena expired in 2022, the Coyotes have struggled to find a new home. Their attempt to build a new arena in Tempe fell through, and no viable option has been presented since. They were playing in Arizona State University’s 5,000-seat Mullett Arena this season.

The NHL reportedly stepped in and is working on facilitating the sale of Coyotes to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith. The Coyotes would play in Delta Center, home of the Jazz, starting next season. The players were already notified about the relocation.

ESPN reports that the Coyotes’ current owner, Alex Meruelo, would be able to keep the Arizona Coyotes’ team name and intellectual property as part of the deal. He would get a chance to re-activate the franchise as an expansion team if he resolves the arena issue in the next five years. Starting an expansion team would reportedly come with a $1 billion fee for Meruelo, the same amount he’ll get from Smiths for the team.

Utah could soon become the home of another major sports team. Smith Entertainment Group (SEG), which owns the NBA franchise Utah Jazz, recently announced plans to bring the NHL team to the state.

SEG placed a formal request to the NHL, stating that the new team would play their home games at Jazz’s Delta Center with plans to build a new arena, which would be designed for “professional and Olympic hockey. “

Ryan Smith, CEO of SEG, confirmed that the company requested the “Initiation of Formal Expansion Process” in a post on his social media.

“SEG envisions a near future where the NHL will thrive in Utah, and we are 100% focused on making this happen as soon as possible,” Smith said in a statement.

NHL also acknowledged SEG’s plans with a statement of their own,  saying that they have been “impressed” by Jazz owners and their commitment to bring an NHL team to Utah.

“Utah is a promising market, and we look forward to continuing our discussions,” the league added.

After SEG’s intentions were made public, rumors began swirling that the Arizona Coyotes, who still don’t have a permanent home, could be candidates for relocation to Utah. The Coyotes were bounced out of Gila River Arena after the city of Glendale decided to opt out of the lease. This forced the franchise to play their home games at the Arizona State campus, and plans to build a new arena seemed to have been stalled.

For his part, Smith told ESPN that he isn’t picky about whether he gets an existing team to Utah or gets to start with an expansion franchise.

The Arizona Coyotes signed 2022 first-round draft pick Logan Cooley to a three-year, entry-level contract, bringing an end to speculation about the player’s future. The 19-year-old player was previously considering returning to Minnesota to play another year of college hockey.

Cooley hit the ground running after being selected third overall in last year’s draft, scoring 22 goals and making 38 assists in 39 games for Minnesota to take them to the NCAA championship game. Second in the country with 60 points, Cooley was able to grab at least one point in 32 games.

After initially deciding to return to the Gophers for another college season, Cooley took to Instagram to reveal that he had changed his mind. “I want to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming an NHL player,” the rising star explained. “The hardest part of coming to this decision was feeling like I was letting people down, but I have to be true to myself and do what’s in my heart. I’m so grateful for my time as a Gopher.”

All-Star defenseman Shea Weber is on the move again. The Vegas Golden Knights have traded the veteran to Arizona Coyotes in exchange for defenseman Dysin Mayo.

As part of the deal, the Golden Knights will also send a 2023 fifth-round pick to Arizona.

Considering that Weber hasn’t played an NHL game since 2021 and is on the long-term injury reserve, the move was essentially motivated by Las Vegas’ desire to offload his contract. The 37-year-old has a deal that runs through the 2025-26 NHL season and is set to earn $3 million annually. His cap hit, however, is actually a lot bigger and comes at $7.85 million.

The Golden Knights will now enter the offseason with a clearer salary cap situation that will allow them to make more moves in an attempt to challenge for the Stanley Cup again. They are not expected to have Mayo, who had zero points in 15 games with the Coyotes this season, on their roster. Instead, the 25-year-old is heading to AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights.

Weber missed the entire 2021-22 season dealing with multiple serious injuries. It is unclear whether he will play hockey again, but that didn’t stop the Coyotes from taking on his contract. They picked up draft assets while also staying above the NHL salary cap floor of $61 million.

Defenseman Jakob Chychrun’s time with the Arizona Coyotes seems to be over. The Coyotes’ head coach Andre Tourigny confirmed on Monday that the franchise is working on trading Chychrun and won’t play him anymore.

Tourigny praised Chychrun for his attitude, saying that the 24-year-old player remained “a real pro” despite being put in an unusual situation.

“He behaved like he should, like a real pro, so credit to him, and I think now it’s time for the organization to take care of business and to make sure we’re on the safe side of everything,” said Tourigny. “So he will remain out of the lineup until something happens for us.”

Chychrun made it clear to the Coyotes that he doesn’t want to be a part of a rebuild and would prefer to play for a franchise that has playoff aspirations. Arizona team was understanding towards the player’s frustrations but failed to find a trade partner for him so far.

The biggest reason why Chychrun remains on Coyotes’ roster is the high asking price. The front office reportedly wants a package that includes at least two first-rounders and additional assets. So far, neither team was willing to meet that price.

It also doesn’t help that Chychrun previously dealt with ankle and wrist injuries and had two surgeries before the start of the 2022-23 campaign. He played 36 games this season, contributing with seven goals and 21 assists.

Chychrun, who was Coyotes’ No. 16 selection in 2016, accumulated 170 points (60 goals and 110 assists) so far in his NHL career. He is known for his strong presence on the ice and impressive skating skills for a player of his size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds).

The Arizona Coyotes are one step closer to calling Tempe, Arizona, their new home. The organization just announced that they are moving forward with their plans to build an arena in Tempe after receiving the green light from the city council.

The Coyotes’ bid to build a new arena on city-owned land has been pushed through with a 5-2 vote during a council meeting earlier this week. The project is also set to include shops, apartments, and restaurants, and is reportedly worth around $1.7 million.

“We want to thank everyone who came out to show their support for this project, this organization, and this vision,” said the Coyotes’ president and CEO Xavier A. Gutierrez in a statement. “We know this is Step 1 and we know that the council made it clear that this begins that process and we’re very excited about it.”

The Coyotes’ plan was publicly supported by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and endorsed by the league in other ways. This reportedly included promises of holding the NHL Entry Draft and NHL All-Star Game in the arena once it is completed.

The Arizona Coyotes were forced to look for a new home after the city of Glendale decided not to renew their lease of Gila River Arena. The Coyotes, who were tenants of Gila River Arena since 2003, are currently playing their home games at the Arizona State University’s campus in Tempe.

With the 2021-22 NHL season set to get underway, the Arizona Coyotes will be the only one of the 32 teams to relax their game-day dress code for players.

The NHL included a strict dress code in its collective bargaining agreement, making it the only major North American men’s professional sports league to do so. The section reads as follows: “Players are required to wear jackets, ties, and dress pants to all Club games and while traveling to and from such games unless otherwise specified by the Head Coach or General Manager.”

The NHL temporarily eased such terms, allowing players to dress however they see fit during the 2020 postseason bubbles in Toronto and Edmonton. While this decision was reportedly enjoyed by many players, the NHL reverted back to its collective bargaining agreement policy in the latter stages of last season.

Alex Meruelo Jr., chief brand officer of the Arizona Coyotes, determined that his team would not follow the rest of the league in following this guideline. Meruelo consulted with former team captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson about the concept; a move that Larsson largely approved.

After failing to strike a deal with Glendale to stay in the Gila River Arena, the Arizona Coyotes hope they will be more welcomed in the city of Tempe. The franchise confirmed that they have submitted a bit to buy two parcels of land in the area with the intention to build a new home for themselves.

“We are pleased to have submitted a proposal to the City of Tempe,” said the Coyotes in a statement. “As regulations surrounding the RFP process dictate, we cannot comment any further at this time, but we remain incredibly excited about this extraordinary opportunity.”

Coyotes have been playing in Gila River Arena since 2003 after leaving Phoenix’s America West Arena, which they shared with NBA’s the Suns. While the team had every intention to remain at their current home, the city of Glendale wasn’t so keen on the idea.

The Glendale City Council first voted against a long-term deal in 2016, forcing Coyotes to lease the arena on year by year basis. This was followed by last week’s announcement from the city in which they said that their agreement with Coyotes will end following the 2021-22 NHL season. The decision was explained by “increased focus on larger, more impactful events and uses of the city-owned arena.”

After learning about the city’s decision, the team owner Alex Meruelo said that he has no intention of moving the team outside Arizona.

Since arriving in Gila River Arena, the Coyotes have made four postseason appearances. Their best run came during the 2011-12 season when they won the Pacific Division and reached the Western Conference Finals.

Arizona Coyotes still hope they can convince All-Star winger Taylor Hall to stay with the organization past this year. According to Coyotes’ head coach Rick Tocchet, the team is confident they’ll be among Hall’s top options when he hits the free agency in the summer.

Coyotes acquired Hall from New Jersey Devils back in December, with the 28-year-old winger contributing with 27 points in 35 games before the NHL suspended its 2019/20 season due to coronavirus. Still, Tocchet believes even this short time will be enough for Hall to want to stay in Arizona.

“I’m not saying he is going to sign here, but I definitely think we’re a team he’s very interested in staying with,” said Tocchet during his appearance on ESPN On Ice.

Tocchet also thinks that Hall won’t be motivated entirely by money when making his decision.

“I look at Taylor, and I don’t think it’s always about the money,” he added. “It’s about being comfortable in the situation. He wants to win. He hasn’t had [team success]. So he wants to be on a team that could win for the next five or six years.”

Taylor Hall has been considered one of NHL’s best players in recent years, tallying four consecutive All-Star appearances since 2016 and winning Hart Memorial Trophy for league’s MVP in 2018. Despite this, he has made just one playoff appearance in his career, and that included a quick first-round exit.

Considering that Hall will be the most coveted free agent in the summer, it won’t be hard for him to get the big payoff and land with the team that has Stanley Cup ambitions. Coyotes’ case here gets slim, as they haven’t made the postseason since 2012. They do have an exciting young core, but it remains to be seen whether that ends up being enough for Hall to stay in Arizona.

Arizona Coyotes have finalized a trade that certified them as a Western Conference contender. The Coyotes officially confirmed on Monday that they have acquired All-Star winger Taylor Hall in a trade with New Jersey Devils.

As part of the trade, Coyotes sent Devils a conditional first-round pick in 2020 and conditional third-rounder in 2021 alongside AHL’s Nate Schnarr and Nick Merkley, and junior defenseman Kevin Bahl. Besides Hall, the Devils also got center Blake Speers.

Hall played 30 games for the Devils in 2019/20 NHL season so far, contributing with six goals and 19 assists.

“Taylor Hall is one of the elite talents in the game today; a Hart Trophy winner, a high-end playmaker and one of the NHL’s most talented forwards,” said Coyotes’ general manager John Chayka. “We are beyond thrilled to add Taylor to our team as we continue in our mission of bringing a Stanley Cup home to Arizona.”

Arizona Coyotes have a 19-12-4 record this season, which helped them remain on the top of the Pacific Division. Still, they have struggled on offense and are just scoring 2.63 goals per game. With an offensive talent like Taylor Hall, who has 208 career goals and 328 assists in NHL, the Coyotes are hoping to get their offense going moving forward. They are also excited about the prospect of teaming up Hall and another star winger in Phil Kessel.

Hall, who previously also played with Edmonton Oilers, has played close to 600 games over the course of his 10-years long NHL career. He has five All-Star selections while winning Hart Memorial Trophy in 2018.
