For some baseball players, playing and competing is the most important thing in their lives. For Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon, it’s just a job.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Rendon said that while he likes the game of baseball, it has never been a priority to him.

“It’s never been a top priority for me,” Rendon said via ESPN. “This is a job. I do this to make a living. My faith, my family come first before this job. So if those things come before it, I’m leaving.”

He later clarified that baseball is still one of his priorities, but just further down the list than some would expect.

“Oh, it’s a priority for sure because it’s my job,” Rendon added. “I’m here, aren’t I?”

Rendon has been going through a rough stretch in recent years, failing to stay healthy and struggling to perform when he was on the field. Since signing a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels ahead of the 2020 campaign, he has only managed to play a total of 200 games and has never played more than 58 games in a single season in the past four years.

Rendon dealt with various injuries in 2023, including a fractured shin, being limited to 43 games, his lowest since making his debut in the majors in 2013. He batted .236 in 183 plate appearances, hitting two homers and having 22 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels will be without their All-Star third baseman Anthony Rendon for the remainder of the 2022 MLB season. The team confirmed the news via social media on Friday.

According to the Angels, Rendon is set to be sidelined due to an upcoming season-ending injury on his wrist.

Rendon struggled with wrist soreness for the better part of the season. He spent time on injured reserve and was able to play only 45 games so far in the campaign. The 32-year-old was hitting a career-low .228 with five home runs and 24 RBIs.

Losing Rendon further adds to the Angels’ misery so far in 2022. The franchise got off to a great start, being 10 games above .500 after 44 played games. The team then inexplicably started trending down and embarked on a franchise-record 14-game losing streak which cost manager Joe Maddon his job. The LA team is currently third in AL West with a 30-35 record.

Anthony Rendon joined the Angels ahead of the 2020 season on a seven-year, $245 million contract. The Angels believed at the time that they were getting a difference-maker that could help them break their postseason drought, but Rendon is yet to show he can be that. He has hit .252 since coming to LA and managed just 20 home runs and 89 RBIs in two-and-a-half years.

The Los Angeles Angels’ big-ticket offseason signing is dealing with a sore oblique and is questionable for the team’s Opening Day game on Friday, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Anthony Rendon, who signed a 7-year, $245 million contract with the Angels over the offseason, might not be ready to take the field this week due to a lingering injury that has caused his problems over the past week.

Rendon reportedly injured his oblique while training at Angel Stadium with his team as part of the “Summer Camp,” designed to get players ready for game action later this month.

In a video press conference with reporters, Maddon stated, “All I know is that he’s more sore today, and with that, he really had to back off his work.” He went on to add, “On the surface, it would appear he’ll have to be pushed back. Knowing him, he’s going to want to play in that first game. I can’t tell you for sure if he’s out of it yet or how long he’s going to be out of it.”

Maddon had previously expressed over the weekend that he expected the star third baseman to play on Opening Day despite his oblique discomfort.

If Rendon can’t take the field on Friday night in Oakland against the A’s, expect David Fletcher or Matt Thaiss to man the position instead.

Major League Baseball Spring Training has kicked off, meaning that real baseball games are just around the corner. The teams have more than a month of practices and exhibition games to go before the regular season gets going, but the excitement for a new season is palpable already.

This offseason was full of significant transactions that have changed the baseball landscape, bringing new faces to new teams. Let’s take a look at the three free agents who joined new teams that are set to have the biggest impacts on their new squads.

Anthony Rendon: Los Angeles Angels

The Angels signed arguably the biggest free agent of the winter, locking up third baseman Anthony Rendon for the next seven years at a cost of $245 million.

The Orange County club has underachieved since Mike Trout, the best baseball player in the world, debuted as a full-time player in 2012, making the playoffs once since then. Rendon should help them get closer to that goal and provide Trout with much-needed lineup support.

Rendon has hit at least 25 home runs and batted .300 for the last three seasons. At age 29, he is at his peak and should help the Angels become a playoff threat.

Gerrit Cole: New York Yankees

Gerrit Cole escaped the mess that is the Houston Astros organization this offseason for the Bronx, inking the richest contract in the history of baseball for a pitcher.

Cole turned the Yankees from merely one of the best teams in the league into a World Series favorite. The 2019 AL Cy Young Award winner turned into one of the premier pitchers in the game while in Houston, recording a sub-2.90 ERA and 275 or more strikeouts the past two seasons.

If Cole can successfully navigate the hitter-friendly combines of Yankee Stadium, he could be the missing piece that leads the Yankees to their first World Series title since 2009.

Marcell Ozuna: Atlanta Braves

Marcell Ozuna was an underrated name on this offseason’s list of free agents. Why? The Dominican-born outfielder had a slightly down 2019 season, batting .240 and 29 home runs while struggling with bad luck with a .257 BABIP.

Ozuna did, however, show plate discipline improvement that should make him one of the premier power hitters in baseball in 2020 if he continues to mash home runs. His signing represents a huge upgrade for the Braves, who have had Nick Markakis entrenched in the left-field position that their new signing is expected to occupy.

Adding Ozuna to a lineup that already has Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, and MVP candidate Ronald Acuña Jr. turns the Braves into World Series contenders if their young pitching staff can continue to make strides forward.

The Los Angeles Angels have finally gotten a superstar to pair with baseball’s best player in Mike Trout, agreeing to a seven-year contract with third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Rendon, who has spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Washington Nationals, will reportedly earn $245 million dollars in his new deal with the Angels.

The Texas native was one of the hottest commodities on the free agent market this offseason after a fantastic 2019 season that solidified his place as one of the game’s best position players. Rendon batted .319/.412/.598 for the World Series champions, smacking 34 home runs and totaling 126 RBI.

Rendon finished 3rd place in NL Most Valuable Player voting.

The Angels have now signed a player who they hope will help to take their franchise to the next level. Despite having had baseball’s best player since 2012 in Trout, the team has only managed to qualify for the playoffs once in his tenure with the team.

Now, Trout has a sidekick in the lineup who should be reaching his peak at the age of 29. Rendon is not only a great offensive player, but his defensive and baserunning contributions were also factors that led the Angels to commit such a large amount of money to him.

Angels fans, the team’s front office, and its players will now cross their fingers and hope that Rendon is the missing piece that will take the team back to the playoffs and into World Series contention.

Major League Baseball Spring Training has kicked off, meaning that real baseball games are just around the corner. The teams have more than a month of practices and exhibition games to go before the regular season gets going, but the excitement for a new season is palpable already.
