The San Francisco Giants upgraded their rotation on Friday by acquiring Cy Young-winning pitcher Robbie Ray in a trade with the Seattle Mariners.

As part of the deal, the Giants are sending outfielder veteran Mitch Haniger and right-hand pitcher Anthony DeSclafani to Seattle.

Ray only played one game in 2023 before being shut down and undergoing Tommy John surgery. He is expected to return to the mound at some point in the summer. The 32-year-old has three more years left on his five-year, $115 million contract that comes with an opt-out after this upcoming season.

Prior to signing with the Seattle Mariners in 2021, Ray played with the Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Toronto Blue Jays. He won the AL Cy Young Award in 2021 when he led the league in ERA (2.84) and strikeouts (248).

Haniger, who was an All-Star in 2018, is returning to the Mariners. He played with the franchise between 2017 and 2022 before agreeing to a three-year, $43.5 million contract with the Giants ahead of the 2023 campaign. The 33-year-old player batted a career-low .209 last season, hitting six homers and having 28 RBIs.

DeSclafani made 18 starts in 2023 and finished the season with a 4-8 record, 4.88 ERA, and 79 strikeouts. He is in the last year of a 3-year, $36 million contract.

The San Francisco Giants got a start on their rotation building plans for the 2021 season after signing free agent starter Anthony DeSclafani to a one-year contract.

DeSclafani began his career with the Marlins before becoming a rotation staple with the Cincinnati Reds over most of the past six seasons.

He will rejoin former Reds rotation mate Johnny Cueto as a veteran starting pitching option for the Giants next season, who are looking to turn the corner after a few seasons of rebuilding.

DeSclafani’s deal, valued at $6 million, is a relatively low-risk signing that the club hopes will provide them with a pitcher who will contribute plenty of solid innings in the upcoming season.

They were able to sign the New Jersey native for such a modest deal partially because of his struggles in 2020. After putting together a career year in 2019 in which he started 31 games with a 3.89 ERA, DeSclafani regressed last season and saw his ERA inflate to 7.22 with his walk rate rising and his strikeout rate falling.

The Giants are betting that his 2021 season will look more like his career averages of a 4.29 ERA with nearly 8 strikeouts per inning, which seems to be a reasonable expectation considering the pitcher-friendly environment of their home park.

Cincinnati Reds have announced on Sunday that they have activated Anthony DeSclafani from the 60-day disabled list and that he will make his 2018 season debut on Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies. This will be the first MLB game for the 28-year-old since September 2016.

DeSclafani suffered a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament in late 2016, which caused him to miss the entire 2017 season recovering. He successfully came back for the Reds’ spring training camp, but unfortunately suffered another injury which has kept him off the field for the first part of 2018 season. Now, according to Reds’ manager Jim Riggleman, the player is 100 percent ready.

Very much so,” – said Riggleman when asked whether the Anthony DeSclafani is ready to play without limits. “He’s gone through many rehabs starts at three different levels, all the Goodyear stuff. He’s stretched out to the high 90s in pitches. There’s nothing left for him to do except pitch for us.

Anthony DeSclafani was drafted by Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB Draft but didn’t play a single game for the team, being traded to Miami Marlins in 2012. Marlins promoted him to the majors in 2014, with DeSclafani being featured in 13 games and posting a 2-2 record with 6.27 ERA. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in December 2014 and went on to play in 51 games for the team over two seasons. DeSclafani had 18-18 record during that time and 3.66 ERA.
