The New Orleans Saints are looking towards the free agent market to fill out their rosters. According to Dianna Russini of ESPN, the Saints have brought in running back Kareem Hunt and linebacker Anthony Barr for workouts.

The Saints have become unexpectedly thin in the backfield after their star back Alvin Kamara received a three-game suspension and fourth-year player Eno Benjamin ruptured his Achilles. They are now left with veteran Jamaal Williams and 2023’s third-round selection Kendre Miller as the only viable options at the position.

Hunt would be a reliable option for the Saints, considering his track of success in the NFL. He rushed for 468 yards and three touchdowns last season with the Cleveland Browns, playing as the No. 2 option behind Nick Chubb. He was a Pro Bowler in his rookie year in 2017, leading the league with 1,327 rushing yards while with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Barr, on the other hand, would serve as a fallback option in case Demario Davis’ calf injury causes more serious issues. The 31-year-old player is a four-time Pro Bowler who is past his best but can still be a valuable backup option. He played 14 games with the Dallas Cowboys last season, managing 58 tackles and 1.0 sacks.

The Dallas Cowboys have decided to sign free agent Anthony Barr on a one-year contract, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported. The deal is believed to be worth up to $3 million.

Barr played for the Minnesota Vikings last season, yet was granted permission by the team to leave as a free agent. The Vikings are reported to be carrying approximately $10 million in dead cap space after entering into a restructured contract with Barr.

A UCLA alumn, Barr was the number nine pick overall in the 2014 NFL draft, emerging as a crucial member of the Vikings’ roster. During his time in Minnesota, he was named to four consecutive Pro Bowls from 2015 to 2018.

While initially a staple in the Vikings’ team, Barr’s appearances became more sporadic after the linebacker almost left the Vikings in 2019 for a move to the New York Jets. With the deal all but confirmed, second thoughts drew him back to Minnesota. Since then, Barr has appeared in just 27 out of a possible 49 games.

Now at the Cowboys, Barr will play alongside 2021 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons and Leighton Vander Esch; the linebacking duo that is viewed as the backbone of the Cowboys’ defense.

It appears that linebacker Anthony Barr had a change of hearts. Although Barr, who spent his entire NFL career with Minnesota Vikings, initially committed to sign with New York Jets, he decided to remain with his current club.

Vikings initially decided not to use the franchise tag on Barr since that would have a $15.7 million cap hit on their salary this year, making him the highest paid player on the team after quarterback Drew Breese. The 26-year-old negotiated a deal with the Jets after this but wanted to think about the decision a bit more. In the meantime, Minnesota decided to offer him a better contract, reportedly worth $13.5 million per season, which ended up being a successful move.

Anthony Barr entered the league in 2014 when Minnesota Vikings took him ninth overall in 2014 NFL Draft. After a solid rookie year, Barr had a breakout sophomore season in which he had 68 tackles, 3.5 sacks, seven passes defended and one interception, which brought him his first Pro Bowl appearance. He went on to establish himself as a key part of Vikings’ defense in the following years while earning three more consecutive Pro Bowl appearances since 2015.

Barr struggled with a hamstring injury in 2018 but still managed to play 13 and be productive. He ended the year with 55 tackles, 3.0 sacks, and two passes defended.

Anthony Barr, linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings, said that his intention wasn’t to hurt Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Barr hit Rodgers in the Sunday’s game against Packers, and Rodgers ended with a fractured collarbone. Rodgers had a surgery on Thursday and may miss the rest of the season.

“By no means was I trying to injure or take out Aaron Rodgers,” – Barr said on Friday. “He’s one of, if not, the best player in this league. I’m not a dirty player. I don’t play dirty. We don’t preach that around here. It’s unfortunate, the injury. I hate to see anybody get hurt. It’s a gift and a privilege to be able to play on the field each week, so I would never try and take that away from anybody, let alone one of the best players in our game.“

Barr’s hit on Rodgers was called dirty by some analysts and he received strong criticism from Packers coach Mike McCarthy. The NFL, however, ruled the hit legal by not fining Barr. He did receive a fine for another play when he head-butted Davante Adams. After the play on Adams, Barr received an unsportsmanlike penalty which caused Vikings to lose 15 yards.
In the game against the Packers, Anthony Barr played only in the first half, missing the second one due to a concussion. He ended the game with 1 tackle and 1 assisted tackle.

Although it is possible Barr suffered a concussion after the head-butt on Adams, he thinks otherwise. Barr believes concussion is the result of him colliding with teammate Linval Joseph late in the second quarter. He didn’t participate in the Vikings’ practice on Wednesday, returning on Thursday as a limited participant. Barr took full part in the Friday’s practice.
