After entering this year’s U.S. Open as a wild-card, former world No.1 Andy Murray will take the same route for the 2020 French Open.

The tournament organizers handed out eight wild-card invitations into the men’s singles main draw, with Murray being the only non-French player to receive one. The non-French players in women’s singles to get invited were Wimbledon semi-finalist from 2010 Tsvetana Pironkova and Eugenie Bouchard, who has Wimbledon finals and French Open semi-finals appearance.

Murray, who has three career Grand Slams, struggled with injuries in recent years and was close to walking away from tennis for good at one point. This caused him to have a significant drop in rankings as he plummeted to No.129 ahead of US Open. After reaching the second round, in which he was eliminated by FelixAugerAliassime, the 33-year-old player improved to No.110, but that still wasn’t enough to enter the main draw at Roland Garros.

Andy Murray’s best result at the French Open was a Finals appearance in 2016 when he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets. Murray, who also has four semi-finals in Paris, hasn’t played the tournament since 2017.

Andy Murray isn’t ready to walk away from tennis just yet. Murray, who is the former No.1 tennis player in the world, recently told reporters that he aims to compete in singles “at some stage this year,” following several doubles matches he is scheduled to play in the coming weeks.

Murray struggled with injuries and resulting pain for the previous two years and hinted at his possible retirement from the sport back in January. But, after hip surgery in January relieved him of pain, the 32-year-old Brit began plotting his return to competitive tennis.

“It’s baby steps just now,” – said Murray. “I’m feeling good, pretty much pain-free and enjoying just training, practicing, improving all the time just now.”

“I hope at some stage this year I would be able to get back to playing singles again,” – he added. “I’m not really interested in putting a time limit on it because I’m quite happy just now. So I don’t need to play singles after Wimbledon or at the US Open to — you know, enjoy doing what I’m doing just now.”

The last singles match Andy Murray had before the hiatus was the Australian Open first round match, which he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in five sets.

Murray will team up with Feliciano Lopez for the Queen’s Club tournament next week, and also plans to compete at Wimbledon in doubles.
