Veteran quarterback Garrett Gilbert almost lead Dallas Cowboys to a win against the unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, but this won’t be enough for him to keep the starting job. According to Dallas’ executive vice president Stephen Jones, Andy Dalton will retake his spot as Cowboys’ starter as soon as he becomes available.

Dalton had an unfortunate past couple of weeks, first suffering a concussion against Washington and then testing positive for COVID-19. This opened up an opportunity for Gilbert, who started against the Steelers and managed the game well while also throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown.

Speaking on 105.3 The Fan on Monday, Jones praised Gilbert’s performance but quickly removed any doubt about the team’s commitment to Dalton.

“When he’s cleared, we fully expect him to step in as our starter,” said Jones.

In order for Dalton to resume his place under center, he’ll need to get a negative COVID-19 test while also being cleared of the concussion.

Andy Dalton signed with Dallas in the offseason to be a backup for Dak Prescott. But following Prescott’s season-ending injury, the three-time Pro Bowler got the opportunity to lead the Cowboys’ offense and show that he can still be a starter in this league.

So far, however, Dalton was far from impressive. He has only 452 passing yards and one touchdown in four games while throwing three interceptions and fumbling the ball twice.

Andy Dalton might have only signed a one-year contract with Dallas in early May, but he’s convinced that his stay in Dallas is set to put him in a position to finish his career strong after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals earlier in the offseason.

Dalton, who was let go by the Bengals after his former team selected LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, landed in Dallas with the expectation that he would be Dak Prescott’s backup.

However, despite the low expectations for playing time for the former Pro Bowler, Dalton feels that his Texas detour could set him up for late-career success and a starting job.

“I feel like I have a lot of good football left,” the quarterback said. “For me, I have to think about the next 10 years. Is it going to be 10 years? I don’t know. But that’s the mindset I have; put myself in the best position for my career.”

It seems that, based on the quarterback’s comments, he expects to look for a starting job in the future despite the expectation that he will back up Prescott this season.

In any case, Dalton will have a chance to “reset” and look to getting back to the form that saw him be one of the league’s most dependable QB starters during the middle of the 2010s.

Less than a week after being released from the team that he quarterbacked for nearly a decade, Andy Dalton found a new NFL home after inking a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Texas native, who spent nine years as the starting quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, will join the Cowboys on a deal that will have him serve as Dak Prescott’s backup.

Dalton was supplanted as Cincinnati’s quarterback by the #1 overall pick in this year’s draft, Joe Burrow. After a 2019 season that saw his production dip for the league-worst Bengals, the team decided to move on from the three-time Pro Bowler.

Dalton, who grew up only four hours south of Arlington in the Houston suburb of Katy, is set to earn $7 million dollars on his one-year deal.

The 32-year-old signal caller is set to use the 2020 season as an opportunity to challenge Prescott for playing time in Dallas and rebuild his market value for the 2021 season and beyond. Despite not finding a starting job for the 2020 season, it isn’t unreasonable to think that a team would gamble on him in the near future.

Dalton is expected to report to Cowboys’ training camp later on this summer.
