After the Bengals selected prized quarterback Joe Burrow with the first overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, it appears that former starter Andy Dalton’s tenure with the team has come to a close.

The news that the Bengals would release Dalton, the all-time franchise leader in touchdown passes and the team’s primary starter since 2011, came only a week after the draft was held.

Dalton, who was selected by Cincinnati in the second round of the 2011 Draft out of TCU, made the Pro Bowl three times during his years as the team’s franchise quarterback. He also led the team to five consecutive playoff berths between 2011 and 2015, but was eliminated in the Wild Card Round on each try.

Despite his early success, the Texas native showed signs of decline in recent years that ultimately led to him being benched for three games halfway through the 2019 season.

Dalton finishes his career in Cincinnati with 31,854 passing yards, 204 touchdowns, and 118 interceptions and a legacy of being the franchise’s all-time best quarterback, by some measures.

Now, Dalton, who will turn 33 in October, will have to look to resume his career elsewhere in the league after nearly a decade in Southwestern Ohio.

Cincinnati Bengals own the No.1 overall pick in this year’s draft, and they will almost certainly use it on a quarterback. This means that their longtime starter Andy Dalton will have to leave Cincinnati in order to get a crack at a starting job in 2020.

Dalton’s exit is reportedly getting near, as the 32-year-old signal-caller and Bengals are working together to find his next landing spot. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Bengals intend to trade Dalton, but they will take into account the player’s wishes.

Rapoport adds that Cincinnati doesn’t want to simply get rid of Dalton and that they will do their best to put him into a good situation.

Andy Dalton’s successor at Bengals will probably be LSU’s QB Joe Burrow, who is coming off one of the best individual seasons in recent college football history. Burrow not only won a Heishman Trophy but also led the Tigers to a national championship. He is almost unanimously projected as the first overall pick in 2020.

Dalton landed in Cincinnati in 2011 as a second-round pick and was given the starting job in his rookie season. Since then, he earned three Pro Bowl selections while leading the Bengals to four postseason appearances in which he failed to record a single win.

Dalton’s career stats include 62.0 completion percentage, 31,594 passing yards and 86 passing touchdowns.

Cincinnati Bengals’ experiment with rookie Ryan Finley as the team’s starting quarterback brought them just 11.0 points per game and extended their losing streak to 11 games. This is why it isn’t surprising that the team’s head coach Zac Taylor decided to revert his decision and re-instate veteran Andy Dalton as a starter.

Taylor announced on Monday that Dalton will start Week 13 game against the New York Jets, hoping they will get their first win of the season.

“It’s time to give him another opportunity,” said Taylor.

“Right now this decision is to help us beat New York,” he added. “We just want a win, and that veteran presence he has will certainly be helpful.”

Andy Dalton was Bengals’ starting quarterback since 2011 but ended up being benched following in Week 9 after an eight-game losing streak. Dalton had 2,252 passing yards alongside nine touchdowns and eight interceptions at the time.

Finley, who was taken in the fourth round of 2019 NFL Draft, stepped in but struggled mightily. The 24-year-old completed only 47.1 percent of his passes, throwing for 474 yards, and two TDs while adding two interceptions and three lost fumbles.

After starting the season 4-1, Cincinnati Bengals lost five out of their following six games and found themselves in a tough spot in the AFC North playoff chase. Things got even tougher on Monday when the team decided to put their starting quarterback Andy Dalton on the injured reserve list, effectively ending his season.

Dalton suffered a thumb injury in Sunday’s loss to Cleveland Brown and had to exit the game in the third quarter. While the team didn’t give any details about the injury, it looks like the 31-year-old has torn the ligaments in his right thumb and may even require surgery.

Before going down with an injury, Andy Dalton had 100 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the game against the Browns. Dalton has completed 226 out of his 365 passes in 2018, throwing for 2,566 yards and 21 touchdowns, while having 11 interceptions.

Bengals will most likely turn to their backup QB Jeff Driskel, who stepped in for Dalton on Sunday and finished the game with 100 yards and a touchdown. Driskel will be handed his first NFL start against the Denver Broncos on December 2nd.

Tom Savage, who was claimed off waivers from San Francisco 49ers on Monday, will serve as Driskel’s backup.
