The Pittsburgh Pirates will have to play out their 2023 season without veteran designated hitter Andrew McCutchen. The five-time All-Star reportedly has a partial Achilles tear.

The Pirates have announced on Wednesday that McCutchen was placed on a 10-day Injured List retroactively from September 5th but didn’t provide more details. According to Pirates’ beat writer Justice Delos Santos, McCutchen will be required to be in a walking booth for at least six weeks.

Pittsburgh’s regular season ends in four weeks, and the team has virtually no chance to get to the postseason considering their 65-75 record to this point.

McCutchen suffered the injury during Monday’s 4-2 win against the Milwaukee Brewers. He limped to the dugout but initially said he was “fine.” However, further test revealed the Achilles tear.

The 36-year-old has been in fine form this season, hitting .256 with 12 homers and 43 RBIs in 112 games. McCutchen will become a free agent at the end of the season but has previously expressed interest in extending his stay with the franchise that gave him his MLB debut in 2009.

McCutchen spent the first nine years of his career in the majors with the Pirates, being selected an All-Star five times and earning NL MVP honors in 2013. He later played with the San Francisco Giants, the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Brewers before returning to Pittsburgh ahead of this season.

The Philadelphia Phillies were dealt a huge blow on Wednesday when they learned that star outfielder Andrew McCutchen would miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

McCutchen suffered the injury in a game against the San Diego Padres on Monday when he came up lame during a run-down play.

The Phillies initially did not give any sort of diagnosis as to what exactly had happened with his knee. Unfortunately, the worst fears were confirmed with Wednesday’s news.

This means that McCutchen will miss the rest of the 2019 season. The outfielder signed a 3-year, $50 million deal with the Phillies during the offseason.

McCutchen was off to a good start with his new team, as he was hitting .256 with 10 home runs. He was etched into a strong Phillies lineup as their leadoff hitter.

Now, the Phillies, who have a half-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, will have to look for a solution to replace him in their lineup and in the outfield.

McCutchen reacted with a frustrated, yet optimistic, tweet that sums up the feelings that he after learning about the extent of his injury.

He will hope to return to the field strong for the 2019 season.

When Pittsburgh Pirates shipped off stars Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen to Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants respectively, it looked like the team is heading to a long rebuild. But, the Pirates are insisting that the thing they are doing is a “part of a roster reset”, and decided to keep some players like closer Felipe Rivero. The 26-year-old left-hander and the Pirates signed a $22 million, four-year contract on Thursday. The contract could be worth $41 million and go for six years if the team picks up the two-year options included in the deal.

Rivero, who was traded to the Pirates from the Washington Nationals in 2016, said that this contract makes him relaxed for the next few years.

I want to be relaxed the next few years and not have arbitration cases,” – said Rivero. “I just want to help the team as much as I can right now. When I got traded they … tried to make you feel like you’re at home. That’s why I wanted to stay for a few more years.

Felipe Rivero went 5-3 with a 1.67 ERA since he became the team’s closer in May 2017. He also converted 21 of 23 save opportunities.

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said that the team is now feeling more confident knowing that Rivero will stay for years to come.

It frees him up to just go pitch, frees him up to just go do his thing,” – said Huntington. “He doesn’t have to worry about a lot of the things that players worry about.

Huntington also discussed the possibility of the Pirates being a very bad team before getting better, saying those kinds of ideas are “false narrative.” He said the team will stay dedicated to winning in the upcoming seasons and try to bounce back from a disappointing 2017 season when the Pirates had 75-87 record.
