The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly planning life without Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cowboys will most likely release Cooper before the new league year starts on March 16th.

Cooper’s release would come just two years after he inked a five-year, $100 million contract extension with the franchise that made him one of the highest-paid wideouts in the league.

As Schefter points out, Dallas has a strong financial motivation to make this move. If they keep Cooper on board, he would be guaranteed a $20 million salary while carrying a $22 million cap hit. By releasing him, the team would get his salary off the books and would only have to take a $6 million in dead cap.

The Cowboys might be willing to deal with the financial repercussions of keeping Cooper if it wasn’t for his poor performances last season. The 27-year-old finished the year with 68 catches for 865 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. This was only the second time in his career that he failed to clear 1,000 yards mark.

If Cooper gets shown the exit door, the Cowboys will turn to Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb as their no. 1 wideout. After that, Michael Gallup should step into the no. 2 role under the condition that he agrees to a contract extension Dallas offered him earlier this week.

Dallas Cowboys’ Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper won’t be heading to the free-agent market after all. Less than 24 hours before the official start of NFL’s free agency, Cowboys and Cooper agreed to a five-year deal.

According to reports, Cooper’s deal will net him $20 million a year and $100 million over the course of the deal. The contract comes with $60 million guaranteed while making Cooper the second highest-paid wide receiver in the league. Currently, only Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones has a bigger yearly average with $22 million.

Dallas was in a hurry to finish the deal, as it was believed that Copper would attract some big offers if he was to officially hit the market. Reportedly, Washington Redskins emerged as Cowboys’ biggest competition for the 25-year-old’s signature, but the player ended up choosing to stay in familiar surroundings.

Cowboys entered the offseason with a goal to keep both Amari Cooper and their quarterback Dak Prescott, and it seems like that goal is now met. While Prescott didn’t sign a new deal just yet, Dallas bought themselves more time with the franchise tag and is expecting to find common ground with the player in the next couple of months.

Since Cowboys acquired him back in 2018, Cooper formed a special bond with Prescott and established himself as one of the league’s best wideouts. He was especially productive last season when he had 79 receptions for 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns en route to his fourth Pro Bowl appearance.

Giving a big contract extension to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was just a beginning of an impending spending spree for Dallas Cowboys. The team is now looking to extend quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper in order to keep their core intact and have a competitive roster for years to come.

Cowboys’ executive vice president Stephen Jones recently made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan and discussed Prescott and Cooper’s contract extensions saying that the organization has “active discussions” about the matter with their two stars.

“Yeah, we’re always open to looking at things,” – said Jones. “Certainly if there are opportunities there that make sense, then we’ll progress. I think pretty much everybody’s on it pretty good that there’s some pretty active discussions now with Dak and Amari, but it doesn’t mean that some can’t pick up in short order with other players that we have on our roster that we certainly want to keep here in Dallas and have them remain Cowboys in the future.”

Both Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper are currently entering the final years of their rookie contracts which makes the matter more urgent for Dallas. Re-signing Cooper, who will earn $13.924 million in 2019, might not be such a difficult since Cowboys expect him to ask for a contract that carries a similar yearly value. Talks with Prescott, on the other hand, might be more troublesome.

Given the fact that Prescott was a fourth-round pick, he was making a lot less than a usual starting QB in NFL and is set to earn just around $2 million in 2019. This makes it likely for him to ask for a huge deal in order to make up for the difference. Cowboys, on the other hand, are not sure they are ready to invest such money in a quarterback that got them to just one playoff win in three seasons. One thing is for sure, however; both parties are in for long negotiations.
