Alvin Gentry didn’t stay unemployed for too long after being fired as New Orleans Pelicans’ head coach back in August. According to multiple reports around the league, Gentry agreed to join Sacramento Kings’ organization.

NY Times‘ Marc Stein reports that Gentry will become an associate coach with Kings, where he will re-join with Luke Walton. The two previously collaborate under Steve Kerr at Golden State Warriors.

Stein added that Gentry was also in the mix for the same position with Philadelphia 76ers as part of the coaching core build by the team’s new head coach Doc Rivers.

Gentry joins an underachieving Sacramento Kings’ organization that finished the 2019/20 season, first under Walton, with a 31-41 record. Kings failed to make the playoffs in the past 14 seasons, which is the longest active drought in the NBA.

Alvin Gentry spent five seasons with New Orleans, posting a 175-225 record during his tenure. He left the franchise as the second-winningest head coach in the franchise history, behind Byron Scott, and with a winning playoff record (5-1).

Pelicans made the postseason trip only one under Gentry, reaching the Conference semi-finals during the 2017/18 NBA season.

New Orleans Pelicans might enter the next NBA season with a new head coach on their bench. According to multiple reports, Pelicans’ current HC Alvin Gentry is on the hot seat after the team’s disappointing performance since the NBA season restart.

William Guillory, Pelicans beat writer for The Athletic, reported in his recent piece that NBA’s “worst-kept secret” is that Gentry’s time with the organization “won’t last much longer.” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, on the other hand, also indicated that New Orleans’ front office is considering a coaching change.

Wojnarowski suggested that Pelicans’ new executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin already has LA Clippers assistant Ty Lue and Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jason Kidd as his preferred choices for the position. Griffin won the NBA championship with Cleveland Cavaliers while Lue was Cavs’ head coach, while he worked with Kidd during his time with Phoenix Suns.

New Orleans Pelicans entered the Orlando bubble with good chances of making the playoffs, but have found themselves out of the race with two games left to play in the regular season. Most of the blame went to Gentry, with many believing that he failed to maximize the potential of Pelicans’ young and talented squad. The 65-year-old particularly raised eyebrows with his handling of star rookie Zion Williamson’s playing time since the restart.

Alvin Gentry joined the Pelicans in 2015, guiding the team to just one winning season and trip to playoffs since then. Gentry previously also served as the head coach of Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, LA Clippers, and Phoenix Suns.

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry’s status had been in question for the restart of the NBA season due to age concerns related to the coronavirus, but the veteran coach was on the team plane and will be present in the NBA bubble in Orlando.

Gentry, who has coached New Orleans since 2015, arrived at the team’s flight to Orlando on Wednesday afternoon and joked with the cameramen as he boarded the plane.

The 65-year-old North Carolina native, who previously coached the Phoenix Suns, had been considered a possible high-risk coach who could be particularly adversely affected by a potential exposure while in Orlando.

However, after undergoing an exhaustive medical exam and several tests, doctors gave the veteran coach the okay to go ahead along with his team to Orlando for the resumption of the league.

The Pelicans, who are currently 3.5 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, are not considered a potential title contender but will at least have the opportunity to impress with some of the league’s best young players.

Fortunately for the team, they will be accompanied by their veteran coach, who will look to inspire his team to a surprise playoff berth.

New Orleans Pelicans have a surprisingly successful season behind them, and their coach Alvin Gentry is one of the major reasons for that. Pelicans’ front office certainly thinks that way, since the team announced on Thursday that they agreed to a two-year contract extension with Gentry.

We are thrilled to have Alvin as our head coach,” – said Pelicans general manager Dell Demps. “He did a tremendous job last season. When we faced adversity, Alvin and his staff continually discovered ways to place the team in situations where we could be successful.

This extension will see Alvin Gentry staying with the organization through the 2020-2021 season since the Pelicans already the team option on the 2018-19 season before the start of 2018 NBA postseason. According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, the extension will give Gentry a salary raise for the next season and a guaranteed contract for 2019-2020 while the terms for 2020-2021 will be performance-based.

After making a blockbuster trade in 2017 by acquiring center DeMarcus Cousins, New Orleans Pelicans had big plans for this season. After a good start of the season, the team found itself in a big trouble since Cousins was ruled out for the season. Pelicans managed to bounce back from this setback and finished the season as the sixth seed in the stacked Western Conference. They managed to sweep the third-seeded Portland Trail Blazers in the first round before being eliminated by the Golden State Warriors.

Alvin Gentry started his NBA coaching career with the San Antonio Spurs in 1989, serving as an assistant under Larry Brown. He later had the same role with several other NBA teams including the Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons, where he would later go on to become the head coach. Gentry was named New Orleans Pelicans head coach in 2015.
